Saturday, Sept 17th, 8th Annual Bags Tournament
L ike us on Facebook!  Make sure to check out our Facebook page. Search for Rock Island Kiwanis Club, and like us!  Make sure to tell your friends and colleagues to like our page also. It's a great way to get the word out about all the good work we do!

The Opening Act

The Club meeting of Tuesday, September 6th, was a joint meeting with the Rock Island Rotary. On our alternating schedule, Rotary served as the host of the meeting.
After the introductions and business meeting portion of the Rotary meeting, the meeting was turned over to our Club President, Chris Elsberg. There were several announcements made.
First, Duncan Reid is receiving medical attention in Iowa City. I don't believe that any visitors are allowed, but keep Duncan in your best thoughts.
September 17th is the Bags tournament and a solicitation was then made for volunteers to work this event and also to get teams lined up for this. It is always a fun event and is one of the major sources of funds for the Club activities.
Thanks were given to all of those who participated in the Labor Day parade. Peanuts were a big hit. In fact, so great that our peanut supply is empty.
Dining Tour books are once again available for the low, low price of $35. A quick run through of the listing of restaurants looks like the publishers, once again, came up with some top-notch businesses.
We also received another reminder that Sheila Guse would be serving as this year's Cheese Whiz, so if your lips are smacking over some of that cheese that made Tom Plechaty famous, get ready for the display.
Next week's meeting will feature program given by our own Heidi Huiskamp-Collins, focusing on NAMI.

The Feature Attraction

The program was given by Mike Oberhaus, Superintendent of Schools for District 41. There are a number of themes that he brought to the group's attention including Dream Builders, Making a Difference, and Nation Builders. Mike also showed a chart comparing what can be anticipated in terms of job salary and remuneration with the extent of a formal education. Mike explained that it was again that time for the school board to analyze and re-work its current strategic plan, which lapses this year. Focus groups are to be assembled to lend as broad and thoughtful input as possible. Mike also furnished the group with statistical information and cited the good news of what is going on in Rock Island schools, including awards, extracurricular activity excellence, and student participation.

Upcoming Programs

Thought for the Day

"If all of the cars in the United States were placed end to end, it would probably be Labor Day weekend." --Doug Larson
