The Opening Act

Club President, Chris Elsberg, called the joint meeting of the Rock Island Kiwanis Club and Rock Island Rotary Club of May 31 to order.  Once again furnishing the entertainment was Jonathan Turner and that popular cover band, "Fatty Acid Radicals".
Since we served as hosts, Chris turned the meeting over to the President of the Rotary Club for their announcements.
When Chris got the mike back, she referred to our various project chairs for our meeting announcements.  First, after receiving a check from the Rotary Club, Chris announced that the First Day Fund kickoff would be coming soon.
After our meeting next week on June 6, Tom Hanson will be gathering together the Nominating Committee to iron out some final details.
Progress is continuing on Birdies pledge sales but those hungry birds will become angry birds if we don't continue to work up those pledges.
Next Monday, Steve Schroder will be leading an Interclub group to Annawan for a 6:30 dinner.
The July 20 Division golf outing at Hawthorne is in the capable hands of Joe Robb.  If you feel that need to whack something really hard, get in touch with Joe.
The Club received thank-yous from several residents of local elderly care facility who received gifts of dozens of roses.
Chris announced that there would again be an effort at resurrecting a young professionals club which would meet once a month during the evening.
In Fun and Fellowship, that iconic Rotary member, Fred Luckenbill, won the preliminary prize, which he graciously turned over to Kiwanis, to play on.  Then wouldn't you know, Lee Schenck won the grand prize of some fine red wine recently squished in oak barrels at the vineyards of Pennzoil.

The Feature Attraction

Heidi Collins introduced the program which was presented by Mr. W. Gerard Huiskamp of Blackhawk Bank & Trust.  Showing his skills and past experience as a skilled teacher, he gave a presentation on the long-wave economic theory, a 52-year cyclical theory which appears to have pretty accurately forecast economic turns in the global economy.

Upcoming Programs

June 6th         Gail Brooks, Rock Island Housing Authority
June 13th       Claire Peterson, John Deere Classic
