FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT
Dear   ,

Small Steps and Giant Leaps

In line with our mission and to offer the best education to our children, I am pleased to announce that Mr. Aryeh Eisenberg was recently appointed Director of Technology. With more than 15 years of experience working with schools, Aryeh is the CEO of Bonim B'Yachad, an Israel based educational company that works with more than 40 U.S. Jewish days schools, including SSLI to provide live online courses, including Advanced Placement Computer Science and Advanced Placement Psychology.

This year we embarked on a major restructuring of our technology systems. Here are just a few highlights:
  • Added security and maintenance to the IT infrastructure;
  • Increased professional development for faculty and staff;
  • Development of additional courses and learning opportunities for students;
  • Equipment enhancements and upgrades on both campuses;
  • And more efficient tech/help desk support.
Join me in welcoming Aryeh to our administrative team by reaching out to him at [email protected]. Additionally, wish him a mazel tov for having his workshop  "Empowering Students With Technology" accepted for presentation at the NYSAIS Teaching with Technology Conference.

Shabbat Shalom,
Laleh Mourtil, Board President

Schechter LI Selected for Jewish Educator Professional Development Initiative
"Ayeka has selected eight schools from a strong application pool of sixteen to participate in a new cohort beginning August 2018 funded by the Jim Joseph Foundation. The schools chosen are Adelson Educational Campus, Carmel Academy, Katz Yeshiva High School, Luria Academy of Brooklyn, Maimonides School, Pressman Academy, Robert M. Beren Academy,  and Solomon Schechter of Long Island. Ayeka was one of ten recipients of the Jim Joseph Foundation's Jewish Educator Professional Development Initiative.

Over the course of this multi-year program, selected Judaic Studies teachers will become proficient in implementing Ayeka's paradigm-shifting Soulful Education pedagogy in their classrooms, and then will coach other Judaic Studies staff at their schools. The program will include retreats, on-site coaching sessions, individual mentoring and virtual conversations for selected staff as well as administration of the selected day schools..." Click here to continue reading.

Upper School Launches Faculty Laptop Pilot Program
Leading by example is core to our educational approach at SSLI. This is how we transform our students into alumni who are leaders in the Jewish world, on college campuses and in their professions. It is no surprise that our faculty takes modeling the behaviors they wish our students to emulate very seriously. As we have moved to a BYOD - Bring Your Own Device approach in our high school, we have inherently transformed our classrooms. To challenge our faculty to experiment with technology and take risks, 6 teachers were selected to receive new touch screen laptops, individualized professional development and support as they integrate new computer based tools into their classrooms. Additionally, these faculty members, along with Ofra Hiltzik and Aryeh Eisenberg, will be attending the International Society for Technology in Education Conference in June. This is the premier ed tech conference and will provide us with the opportunity to learn new ideas and to meet colleagues from all over the world.

With faculty members selected for this opportunity from all of the school's educational departments, and chosen based on their demonstrated commitment to enhancing their own classrooms. We believe that they are the right faculty leaders to serve as ambassadors for technology integration to the entire faculty.

A Letter From the Spielman/Baumgarten Family

Every year on the yahrzeit of Bill Spielman z"l, Schechter LI students are treated to the memory of his kindness. See letter below written by the Spielman/Baumgarten Family.

William Spielman z"l

The 16th of Shevat was the yahrzeit of Bill Spielman z"l.

He loved being here in the school!  You and your teachers may remember seeing him ...
He'd walk into classes here and in the elementary school --- only disrupting them a little!
Knowing him, he probably had a chocolate bar in his pocket!

Billy was a charismatic man - honest, independent, and affectionate.
He was also a bundle of energy, always in motion. His passion for
life and creative spirit permeated everything that he did. His enthusiasm
about you, our students and faculty, was evident to everyone who knew him.
Grandparents and Special Friends Day

Ladies Night Out

Oh what a night and what a fabulous turnout!! On January 11th, we held our Winter Event, a bowling party at AMF Lanes in Mineola. It was a fun night filled with bowling (of course), laughter, drinks and delicious food.  We had great music playing along with a video showcasing all of our wonderful Schechter students.  The  PA was decked out in new Schechter gear. The shirts were a huge hit and they are still being offered in adult and children sizes through the  PAClick here to shop.

We ended the night giving out raffle prizes and we are pleased to announce that we raised nearly $1,000!  This will be enough to fund the Chesed committee needs for shiva meals, bereavement support, birth celebrations, illness and hardship assistance.  We will also have some left over that we can use for more upcoming events!  An extra special thank you to Genia Taub for helping put together the raffle prizes.  Click here for additional photos.
Tu B'Shevat Across Campus
Lower School

On January 31st, we welcomed Rabbi Joel Levenson to lead our Tu B'Shevat Seder. To honor the birthday of trees, we refrained from using reams of paper, and instead made a slide show of the Haggadah and projected it onto a full-size movie screen. The children were engaged as the slides moved along, and many of them had opportunities to read the slides to their friends. There were interactive activities where the children drew pictures of the things we get from trees and spoke to their friends about a trait they have that they want to grow and become bigger and greater in the coming year. The children also thanked the trees for giving us seeds, fruit, paper etc. by making beautiful thank you cards that are displayed on the bulletin board down the main hallway. A huge thank you to Rabbi Levenson for leading us with his wisdom and his humor. He is the quintessential Schechter gift!

Students Connect with Professionals at Career Night
Article featured in Paw Print Now by Grace W. SSLI '19

"On January 9th, juniors and seniors attended a mandatory Career Night where students had the opportunity to speak to professionals about their career paths and explore possible internships. Schechter alumni
also attended the event to look for internships, and high school students had the opportunity to speak to some of the alumni with current internships. Schechter parent and business owner Mr. Albert Hakim began the night with a presentation about how to prepare for a job interview. For the rest of the night, students walked around the gym and spoke to professionals in various fields like real estate and technology..."  Click here to read more.
