Donn Patton Brooks

Donn Patton Brooks, age 80, of Kyle, TX, passed away on Friday, June 29, 2018. He was born in Columbus, Ohio on March 2, 1938, the son of Roy B. and Verna L. (Patton) Brooks. His parents, and his brother, Carvel Brooks preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Betty (Johnson) Brooks; son, Ross Patton Brooks and wife, Linda of Kyle; daughter, Lynn Chapman and husband, Jason of Kyle; brother, Linton Carvel Brooks of Austin; and five grandchildren.

Donn moved to Kyle when he was 10 years old. He lived on a farm where Brooks Crossing is today--FM 150 wasn’t paved. He graduated from Kyle High School and served in the Air Force as a military policeman, stationed mainly in France. After his military service, he worked as a policeman in several cities.

While in Refugio, Tx as a policeman, he met Betty Marie Johnson playing the piano in the Methodist Church. Donn and Betty were married in the Methodist Church in Kenedy, Texas on June 24 th, 1967. They celebrated their 50 th Wedding Anniversary at the Family Life Center of the Methodist Church in Kyle, Texas last year and their 51 st in Donn’s hospital room this year. Ross Brooks and Lynn Chapman, son and daughter, became part of their family at six weeks old babies. Both Ross and Linda and Lynn and Jason and their families live in Kyle. Five grandchildren, Madi, Justin, Aileen, Sebastin and Bobbie are made for spoiling and Madi blessing him as the “handsome genius”.

Donn and Betty moved to Kyle in 1968 and Donn went back to college and continued to work on degrees, finishing his bachelor, two masters degrees and worked on his doctors. Donn taught school for 46 years, teaching at Gary Job Corps, Hays CISD and Austin Community College. His last day of teaching was the day they took him to the hospital, June 20, 2018.

Donn and Betty loved to travel—they visited 49 states and 31 countries, all across Canada and Mexico and most of Europe with Ross and Lynn making the many car trips through 48 states.

Donn served in the community and city of Kyle as councilman on many committees, the library and the Methodist Church. He was head of construction for the Family Life Center. God came first in his life, followed by his wife, children and extended family. He loved his students, even the ones that made him remember them always. He was a people’s person.

The Living the Questions adult Sunday school class would like to invite everyone to participate in our new study beginning on Sunday, July 15th from 10:15am – 11am in the Wallace Classroom in the Family Life Center.

Terry Runkle will lead our class through a 7 – 8 week reading and discussion of our current Bishop, Robert Schnase’s book, Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations (the revised and updated edition). He describes the book as such:

“Over the past ten years, thousands of church leaders have successfully transformed congregations with the principles from the original Five Practices: Radical Hospitality, Passionate Worship, Intentional Faith Development, Risk-Taking Mission and Service, and Extravagant Generosity. However, much has changed in the world and the Church. Leaders have discovered new ways to implement the Five Practices in settings that were not imagined when the original book was released. This revised and updated edition of the ministry leadership classic includes a significant amount of new material.”

This study is open to all, not just church leadership, but the purchase of the book will be
necessary in order to get the most out of this study. You can purchase it in one of the following

1. For Kindle ($9.99 on Amazon) – purchased by the attendee onto their Kindle device
2. In Paperback ($14.79 on Amazon) – purchased by the attendee through the Amazon
website directly
3. In Paperback ($14.79) – purchased in a mass order by Krystyn Jensen and reimbursed
by the attendee through cash or check

If you would like to participate, please contact Krystyn Jensen directly at or by phone at 512.618.7478 by Sunday, July 8th if you would like to be
a part of the mass order. Otherwise, you may purchase the book yourself and join us on July 15th .

We look forward to you joining us in this study and exploring new ways to connect to God, our
church, and our community!

Our Blessings Box is getting utilized by the community, which is great, but that also means that it is getting emptied out quite frequently. Please consider donating non-perishable food items, diapers, personal care items and snack food items (goldfish, raisins, etc) if you are able.

One person from the community told us she visits the Blessings Box at least twice a week and is especially grateful for the diapers and kid friendly foods. She says she stops by on the way to take her kids to the park and can almost always find a snack for them.

Each Christmas, The Burke Center for Youth is one of the deserving causes that benefits from the KUMC Angel Tree.

They are hosting a Ditch the Road Trail Run - a 5k benefitting the center on Saturday, September 8th and KUMC would like to participate! Please join us!
You can sign up at
and visit their website for more information about the center.
