L'Eglise Clinet, Troplong Mondot, Branaire Ducru & More

Today we are able to offer one of our favorite wines of the 2011 vintage, Chateau L'Eglise Clinet.  It now seems like a given, but in 2011 Pomerol was once again one of the top appellations in Bordeaux.  With that in mind, it is no surprise that L'Eglise Clinet made such a good wine.  It was the "buzz" wine as we discussed our tastings with our colleagues in the trade.  While not inexpensive, they made a massive effort to reduce prices from the 2010 and it is one of the wines that we can recommend with confidence in this vintage.

Also offered today are some other nice wines from Troplong Mondot, Branaire Ducru and more.  Our complete list of 2011s is below.  Please don't hesitate to ask if you are looking for a wine or bottle size that is not listed.  We would be happy to try and help.

2011 Chateau L`Eglise Clinet, Pomerol (750ml)

Wine Advocate - 92-95 Points
Wine Spectator - 91-94 Points

$ 149.50 per Bottle (750ml)

Delivery: Mid 2014

"(92-95) out of 100...Another brilliant wine from proprietor Denis Durantou, the powerhouse 2011 l’Eglise Clinet is one of the most densely packed and stacked wines of Pomerol. Inky ruby/purple-colored with a classic bouquet of black currants, black cherries, creme caramel and vanillin, it reveals great fruit on the attack and mid-palate, medium to full body, lavish extraction, no bitterness, sweet, well-integrated tannins, and enough acidity for vibrancy and definition. It should be drinkable in 3-5 years and last for two decades or more." - WA

"(91-94) out of 100...This has drive, depth, purity and focus, with plum sauce, raspberry coulis and blackberry fruit melded nicely together and framed by suave toast. Shows a graphite edge that belies the general profile of the vintage." - WS

2011 Chateau Troplong Mondot, St Emilion (750ml)

Wine Spectator - 91-94 Points
Wine Advocate - 91-93+ Points

$ 87.50 per Bottle (750ml)

Delivery: Mid 2014

"(91-94) out of 100...A gorgeous red, offering ganache and fig notes melded nicely together, with ample heft, but good freshness, with a long, dark, richly layered finish. This goes for power—and pulls it off." - WS

"(91-93+) out of 100...The wine boasts a dense blue/purple color as well as aromas of black raspberries, blackberries, acacia flowers, espresso, toasty oak, and a sweet, mossy, foresty character that ranges from an autumnal, vegetative smell to minerality. Opulent, dense and strikingly rich and extracted with moderately high tannins, this is one of the bigger, richer wines of the vintage. Give it 4-5 years of cellaring and drink it over the following 20-25." - WA

2011 Chateau Branaire Ducru, St Julien (750ml)

Wine Advocate - 91-93 Points
Wine Spectator - 90-93 Points

$ 49.50 per Bottle (750ml)

Delivery: Mid 2014

"(91-93) out of 100...A top-notch effort from this estate, the 2011 exhibits an exotic perfume of lead pencil shavings, white chocolate, raspberry jam and red as well as black currants. Loads of fruit, a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel and velvety tannin suggest this beauty will drink well for 15+ years. It is one of the stars of the appellation in this vintage. Bravo!" - WA

"(90-93) out of 100...A very elegant style, with a violet frame to the supple red currant, blueberry and black cherry fruit flavors that mingle with high-toned spice on the finish. Offers fine-grained structure." - WS

Your Ability to Receive Wine Shipments is Again Under Threat!

HR 1161 - Why It is Important to You

While the bill known as HR 5034 was killed in committee last year without a vote being taken, it should be no surprise that those seeking to erect barriers to trade are at it again. The National Beer Wholesalers of America, supported by the Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of America, worked to get HR 1161 introduced into the U.S. House of Representatives in March. As with last year’s bill, HR 1161 would, if passed, give states the right to pass bans on direct shipping that could not be challenged in court and would generally limit wine consumers to the selection of wines that wholesalers choose to bring into a state. With this in mind, we feel compelled to bring HR 1161 to your attention. Please see below for more information and what you can do to get involved.

Your immediate attention to this issue is necessary if it is to be stopped.

We urge you to visit Stop1161.org and sign up for emails that will keep you informed of the status of the bill and let you know when and how it is necessary to contact congress.

At this website you can also read who supports the bill, who is opposing HR1161, scan numerous media reports on the legislation and, most importantly, stay informed about your rights to buy wine direct from retailers and wineries. The Specialty Wine Retailers Association (of which The Chicago Wine Company is a contributing member) is maintaining the page and is working hard, with other organizations and consumers groups, to stop this harmful legislation.
