MARTHA CURIT HOUGH
LAA/MERRILL LYNCH ATRIUM GALLERY
JUNE/JULY CHOICE AWARD WINNER
Crisp, white, gauzy linen billowing in the warm, breezy sunshine of a dewy summer morn certainly compares to the freshness of Martha Hough's trio of macro botanical photography winners now on display at the LAA/Merrill Lynch Atrium Gallery. "Stewartia", "Azalea Tears", and "Peonae" may be small in stature but to the purist* photographer or appreciator these florals tower and sway over the rest.
We normally see Martha with brushes in her capable hands preferring to paint in oils, acrylics, and pastels. However, in a departure from her norm, we learn she's a darned good and accomplished photographer as well! Often creating painted works from what her lens has captured, it wasn't until 2009 that a serious photography side "developed" its own personality.
While on a journey to East Africa, not giving it a second thought, she snapped some great close-ups of the native flora in the region. Upon return home to Rhode Island, she found herself entering the Newport Flower Show (photography division). A self-described "point and shooter" it was apropos that her entry, "Agave" in black and white, was shot (no pun intended) at the home of notorious gun-runner Adnan Khashoggi in Tanzania! Lo and behold, (then) novice Martha won the coveted Garden Club of America Award of Distinction in Photography!
Holding true to the staid advice of close friend and photographer, Margaret Brennan, Martha continues to favor black and white compositions taken from her ever-present iPhone...what she sees is usually what you get! She foregoes the use of the typical photographic technology that's on the market today opting to download, crop, and then print...it's done! What's revealed is clean, inspiring, unretouched subject matter that receives the attention it deserves.
It's certainly a formula for success as Martha has gone on to garner many other achievements including the Best in Show 2011 from the Newport Flower Show and third in class in 2013 and 2014. She was accepted into the juried Boston Flower Show in 2015 and received a GCA Club Photography Award in 2017. You may also remember seeing her "SKINNIE" cover shot this past winter?
A lady of many talents, when not immersing herself hands-on artistically, Martha can be found on the golf course, singing her heart out in her cappella choral group, or keeping the minutes as Secretary for the Landings Art Association. She is also a treasured charity volunteer devoting many hours to the LAA's Art's in Education Grant's Program benefiting the children of greater Savannah and the LWGA's "Golfing for a Cure" Cancer Charity Tournament.
Martha's award-winning photography is currently on display through July 31, Monday through Friday from 9 to 4 pm at Merrill Lynch, Village Square on Skidaway Island. To purchase an existing or custom work, please contact Martha at
*Roughly defined: purist photography is such that is not altered cosmetically through digital or other such technology treatment colorizations or enhancements thus creating an entirely new composition.
Due to a lack of response, creation of the LAA Cookbook has been put on the "back-burner" until further notice!
