November 2016

A lot has changed in a month.

At the ASLA Annual Meeting in New Orleans, we unveiled the New Landscape Declaration, a new vision and 21st century call to action for landscape architecture.
The Declaration is a potent reminder of the common values that we share as designers, and we hope that it will serve as a beacon to guide our work collectively and as individuals, firms, civil servants, educators, non-profit leaders, mentors, and the many other capacities in which we work.
LAF deeply thanks all who contributed their ideas and passion to the process -- from the Summit presentations and discussions to the final wordsmithing. The final Declaration resulted from four months of intense debates, deliberations, and heated discourse about our ideas and priorities, all done in a constructive and respectful way. We are proud and humbled to have led this powerful and timely effort.
Please read and discuss it and if you agree, sign on and pledge your services to answer the call!

The New Landscape Declaration is Here!

LAF has released  The New Landscape Declaration , a 21st century call to action for the landscape architecture profession. The Declaration is the synthesis of the ideas presented at LAF's historic Summit on Landscape Architecture and the Future in June. We are now encouraging landscape architects across the globe to sign on to this ambitious vision and share how we can turn the ideas into actions to solve the challenges of our time.

Thank you to all who attended LAF's 31st Annual Benefit at the Civic Theatre in New Orleans! With over 500 guests and 32 generous sponsors, we raised $253,000 to support LAF research, scholarships, and leadership programs! The program featured the unveiling of the New Landscape Declaration, recognition of our 2016 Olmsted Scholars, and a lively set from jazz icon Kermit Ruffins and The Barbecue Swingers. Special thanks to Lead Sponsor IRONSMITH.

Elyzabeth Engle, a PhD candidate in rural sociology and winner of our 2016 GCA/Douglas Dockery Thomas Fellowship in Garden History and Design, is studying the capacity-building and outcomes of community garden programs in Central Appalachia. In today's rural communities, which face significant social and environmental challenges, community garden programs can have a profound impact by fostering economic stability, resilience, and social capital.

2016-2017 LAF Board of Directors

The new LAF Board of Directors began its term on October 21. Jennifer Guthrie of Gustafson Guthrie Nichol became President, following now Past-President Kona Gray of EDSA. Adam Greenspan of PWP Landscape Architecture became President-Elect. 13  new Directors joined the Board, replacing 11 who retired off, in many cases after extended terms of service . We are grateful for the transformative contributions of the outgoing members and look forward to working with the new group to advance the vision laid out in our New Landscape Declaration.

On October 20-21, LAF held a series of events in New Orleans to honor the 2016 Olmsted Scholars, landscape architecture students nominated by their faculty for demonstrating exceptional leadership potential. Forty of this year's 76 Olmsted Scholars traveled from across the U.S. and Canada (and beyond) to participate. Activities included a luncheon with the LAF Board and program sponsors, facilitated Leadership Conversation, tour of the Spackman Mossop and Michaels offices, and recognition at LAF's 31st Annual Benefit.
