LOWER SCHOOL STUDENTS EXPERIENCE THE MAGIC OF THE MOXI
This week, early kindergarten, kindergarten, third grade and fourth grade students visited the new Museum of Exploration and Innovation (MOXI). First and second graders will take a field trip there at the beginning of May.

The museum's mission is to ignite learning through interactive experiences in science and creativity. As Santa Barbara’s newest hands-on destination for families and curious minds of all ages, MOXI is a place where you can explore and discover new things about the world around you, ask questions, seek answers, and have a blast doing so.

Mrs. Svedlund interviewed EK and kindergarten students about their favorite parts of the field trip. Many enjoyed building then racing cars on the racetrack, as well as the water play on the rooftop garden (followed by drying off in the blow dryer afterwards!). What fun learning is when ignited by exploration.
8TH GRADERS SHOWCASE PROJECT-BASED LEARNING WORK IN HISTORY & SCIENCE
Written by Humanities Instructor Mrs. Alldredge

At the end of the quarter, eighth grade students showcased their interdisciplinary PBL (Project Based Learning) work in history and science class. Science Instructor Mr. Moore and Humanities Instructor Mrs. Alldredge challenged the 8th graders to create an amusement park with a human rights twist. Each group was assigned a plot of land (on a table in the science lab) on which to build. Rides utilized an assigned energy transformation and demonstrated the law of conservation of energy.  Rides were tested for:
  • STEM - completing the assigned energy transformation, the correct final type of motion, and ride functionality (passenger capacity and ergonomics).
  • Humanities - linking the aesthetics and descriptors of the ride to specific Articles from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).

FIRST & THIRD GRADERS COLLABORATE AT THEIR OWN FRACTION PIZZARIA
This week, first and third graders took on the roles of pizza chefs at Fraction Pizzaria. The chefs were asked to create pizza with fractions of toppings--for example, one including 2/8 mushrooms, 2/8 peppers, 1/8 pepperoni, and 3/8 onions. Students had the opportunity to learn from each other in this cross-grade level learning activity.
