LAGUNA STUDENTS TO PRESENT AT SBCEO SHOWCASE OF INNOVATIVE LEARNING
Congratulations and best of luck to Laguna’s Project Based Computing class who was selected to present their idea of using an iPhone to control a quadcopter via bluetooth at this year’s SB County Education Office’s Showcase of Innovative Learning.

This exciting event takes place on May 11 from 4:30-6:30pm at the SB County Education Office Auditorium. It will feature students and educators of Deeper Learning Schools sharing exemplary innovative educational technology, which is student-centered, collaborative, project based, and meaningful for both students and teachers.

A SPECIAL DAY FOR SPECIAL ATHLETES
This month during Swooper Citizens, Laguna's Grades K & 1 service learning and character development program, students are focusing on the trait of enthusiasm. What better way to show enthusiasm than to cheer at a local sporting event? After receiving a visit from a local athlete, students attended the local Special Olympics track and field event last Friday to share their enthusiasm and support. SEVENTH GRADERS VISIT PILGRIM TERRACE & FOOD BANK
Seventh grade students delivered a total of 1,900 items collected (or 1,480 pounds of food) to the Santa Barbara Food Bank last week.

After counting and loading the food onto the truck, students visited Pilgrim Terrace --an affordable senior community comprised of 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom apartments that serves low to very-low income households. Students toured their Tower Garden Farm that provides fresh food for the residents, as well as healthy herbs and produce for other local non-profits and even local restaurants.

After enjoying a delicious barbecue lunch at Pilgrim Terrace, they visited the Food Bank to unload the food and tour the facility.

The food drive is the continuation of a seventh grade interdisciplinary project between English, geography, and science, which focuses on food and migration. Although part of the seventh grade curriculum, the entire Middle School got involved through the advisory program.

Congratulations to the San Nicolas House for collecting the most non-perishable food items and earning points toward The House Cup!

HOUSE FOOD DRIVE COMPETITION PLACINGS
1st: San Nicolas won the house competition with 470 items
2nd: Santa Rosa
3rd: Santa Cruz
4th: San Miguel
5th: Santa Barbara
6th: Catalina

8th: San Clemente

The food drive was more successful than ever before. Thank you for all the contributions!
THIRD GRADE SWOOTOPIA IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS
Last week, third grade students set up their store fronts and opened for business! Business partners have been conducting commerce and reflecting on what works well, areas for growth, ideas for the next business day, and their success of collaboration.

Throughout this process, students will work on changing and adapting their business models to increase earnings.

Third graders also learned how to balance their deposits and withdrawals, and balance a check register.

FOURTH GRADE TEACHER DONNA BROWN WINS SCHOLASTIC READING CLUB'S TEACHER APPRECIATION HONOR
Congratulations to Fourth Grade Teacher Donna Brown for being recognized in Scholastic Reading Club's Teacher Appreciation Sweepstakes. One of our Lower School families nominated her, and she is one of only 100 teachers chosen from all over the country. Mrs. Brown was presented with a surprise Popcorn Factory Tower delivered to school yesterday.

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week! Thank you, Mrs. Brown, and thank you to all Laguna teachers for everything you do for our community!
LS TEACHER BROOKE GREEN PLACES IN NATIONAL SWIM MEET
Last weekend, Third Grade Teacher Brooke Green competed in the U.S. Masters Swimming Spring National Championship in Riverside, California.

There were 2,026 participants in this year’s competition, which was open to swimmers 18 years old and older. Brooke swam as part of the Santa Barbara Masters team, which consists of 32 swimmers representing Santa Barbara. Two of these swimmers were former Olympians, Jeff Farrell (Olympics 1960) and Gabrielle (Rose) Chang (Olympics 1996 and 2000). Austin Abrams (Laguna alum and son of LS Art Instructor Melissa Abrams) also competed at this event with the Santa Barbara team. Laguna college counselor Matt Struckmeyer is part of the Santa Barbara Masters team, as well, but he was unable to compete due to a recent wrist injury.

Mrs. Green competed in the 50 yd freestyle, 100 yd freestyle, 50 yd backstroke, and 100 yd backstroke. Her goal was to place in the top 10 for her age group for one of her events, and she came home with four top 10 medals!

She reflects on the memorable weekend: "I got to bond with my awesome teammates of Santa Barbara Masters, and I was able to watch several former Olympians Ryan Lochte and Nathan Adrian swim. And... I was able to share the experience with my biggest cheerleader, my mom."

Mrs. Green swam competitively until age 12, then was inspired by her daughter Angie to begin swimming again last year. She has been carrying around a quote by George Eliot that is a good reminder for us all--“It is never too late to be what you might have been.”

Classroom E402
10AM-12PM

It's never too late to join the Middle School Math Club (MSMC)! Participants will solve new mathematical problems and learn new problem solving methods, both individually and as part of a team. The problems will be based on grade appropriate math knowledge, yet may require higher order math problem solving skills.

All activities of the MSMC are free of charge. Saturday sessions are conducted by Joel Poholsky, and lunch is included! Come give it a try!

To register your child today, please email Joel Poholsky.

The Laguna community was hit hard this week with the sudden loss of beloved soccer coach and substitute teacher Davies Kabogoza. Students plan to honor him and celebrate his life by holding a soccer tournament fundraiser to benefit his mother and family in Uganda.

Davies arrived in the U.S. in late 2010 and played/coached soccer at Santa Barbara City College and, more recently, coached at Laguna Blanca School. He also played for Westmont College, where he graduated last year with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology. He was also a physical therapy aide at Hayashida Physical Therapy in Santa Barbara.
