Greetings Dear Friends
We have been enjoying a magnificent autumn. It has felt more like an extension of summer, for which we are very grateful. November should be an interesting month, with the ridiculous display of ridiculosity that is the American election. It gives us all an opportunity to feel compassion for the American people, who get to choose between bad and badder. It gives us the opportunity to see the election circus for what it is, one of many huge distractions to keep the population from seeing what is really going on - what is really important. For example, the Pentagon has just had trillions of dollars disappear. Is that making front page news? While the population is distracted, the corporate criminals and banksters continue to steal. No indictments. No consequences to pay.
This month's meeting of the Guelph Chant Club will be the last one. Please read about it below.
This month's article is a continuation of the series - 'Chakras and the Tree of Life' - seeking an understanding of the way that we humans interface with the vibrational universe. It introduces the Qabalic concept of Jacob's Ladder and the 'dark night of the soul'.

After founding and running the chant club for 15 years, I am feeling the need to move on. So this will be the last one. I am deeply grateful to all who have participated over the years - it has been a soulful and fullfilling way to meditate using the power of chant, surrounded by beautiful people. Thank you.

CHAKRAS AND THE TREE OF LIFE
PART 16 - JACOB'S LADDER
One of the mystical aspects of the Qabala involves a journey up Jacob's Ladder, a process that transports one from the densities of life in the physical realm, up through the seven heavens to enlightenment. This concept also makes an appearance in the Bible as an allegorical story. In the biblical version, Jacob has a dream in which he sees a ladder upon which the angels are moving back and forth between Heaven and Earth.
In the Qabalic version, this ladder is a metaphor for a process or a path or methodology by which we can journey into the higher realms in a 'cosmic vehicle' called the 'merkaba'. One can activate one's merkaba using a specific meditative process that causes one's energy fields to spin in a certain way. This allows the initiate to travel astrally through the seven levels, the sephiroth, to arrive at 'seventh heaven' and glimpse the 'throne of God'.
On the ascending journey toward the higher realms or enlightenment, there is an abyss between the supernal triad and the rest of the tree of life. In other words, progress into the higher chakras and into an enlightened state of being is sometimes thwarted by a condition that has been referred to as the 'dark night of the soul'. This passage, often marked by confusion and spiritual crisis, is successful only if the individual overcomes all fears and sees through all illusions. One can only sustain existence in the higher realms if one is in a constant state of love - there is no room for fear.
This abyss is said to be ruled by an entity named 'Choronzon', the demon of chaos, sometimes called the Guardian of the Threshold (an aspect of the entity known as Thoth/Hermes). Choronzon takes the form of whatever fear is possessed by the journeying individual. In order to pass through the abyss one must confront this fearsome demon and recognize it as an illusion, the manifestation of one's own fear.
Someone who seeks a faster path, such as that of the dark magician or by the ingesting of psychotropic drugs, risks the danger of an unsuccessful, and thus horrifying, encounter with Choronzon. It is recommended that one take an approach that is slow and steady. Learning to activate one's merkaba, like any meditation, usually requires a persistent dedication and an attitude of grace, incrementally overcoming fears and learning to sustain a constant state of love.
