Career & Internship Readiness Conference
For the second year, Long Beach CaLL, in partnership with  Cal State Long Beach’s (CSULB) Career Development Center (CDC) and the Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD), hosted its Career and Internship Readiness Conference on Saturday, April 6. The Conference was held at Browning High School and more than 60 high school students participated.

In the morning workshops, CDC staff spoke to students about choosing careers based on strengths and interests. Students also practiced their "elevator pitch": how to introduce themselves in a concise, but "catchy" manner. The afternoon included two breakout activities, again, facilitated by our colleagues from CSULB's CDC:

  • Netiquette: Building a Positive Online Reputation
  • Mock Interviews
Thanks to CaLL's volunteer recruitment, 26 industry professionals, representing a broad array of industries and careers, interviewed students, allowing them to practice their interview skills and get feedback about their performance. We would like to thank all the mock interviewers for volunteering their time to provide such a meaningful experience. Many volunteers commented that they would like to help again saying, “I would like to participate in other work-based learning experiences through CaLL. It was very well organized!” They also had great things to say about participating LBUSD high school students: “The students were well prepared! I am impressed!”

We also want to give a shout out to the CDC staff, who provided resources and facilitated each session and activity. Through partnerships like this, we are able to offer exclusive opportunities to LBUSD students!

Cameron Ursua-Newsome, a senior at Sato Academy of Mathematics and Science, interned with Neff Construction in summer 2018. He worked on-site at Pacific High School in Garden Grove. Cameron shared that this internship helped shape what he wants to do in the future: to become a civil engineer or work in architecture. Cameron stated, “I found it interesting being behind the scenes on a construction site and helping to build a school that will be in service for years to come. Driving by, many people might think construction is moving really slowly, but there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes.” He also shared that the most important takeaway from his internship was communication. “I will always remember how important it is to communicate with others on my team and who I am working with, for their safety and mine.”

Neff Construction is an industry leader in K-12 school construction. They have an unwavering dedication to excellence, integrity and team building. The company establishes and maintains solid, long-term relationships with school districts, designers, trade contractors, state agencies and other stakeholders. CaLL appreciates Neff’s partnership and its dedication to LBUSD students.
