Summer 2019 Internship Program
in Full Swing
After months of processing applications and paperwork, conducting interviews, and making matches, Long Beach CaLL is proud to share that we will place over 100 students with 58 employers in paid and unpaid internships across the Long Beach, Los Angeles, and Orange County areas in our Summer 2019 Internship Program! The majority of students have already begun their internships and more will follow in the next two weeks.

Internship positions are in an array of industries. Building and construction trades, engineering and architecture, health and medical, and public service are just a few examples. Many Long Beach Unified School District departments are also participating, some for the first time! Participating departments include Facilities, Information Services, Multimedia Services, Research, and Nutrition Services. In total, CaLL is working with 18 new internship hosts.

To all organizations that partner with us in CaLL's summer internship programs, we cannot thank you enough for your support in providing so many students with valuable work experience, an exploration of career fields, and an opportunity to learn and develop new skills.
Poly High Students Learn about
Careers at the Long Beach Airport
On May 15, Juliette Mahoney, Administrative Analyst, and Lindsey Phillips from Public Affairs, took time out of their busy work day at the Long Beach Airport to help Poly High School students learn about the airport and jobs that are available there. The students’ teacher, Alyssa Tucker, had asked CaLL to help identify an airport representative who would be a guest speaker. She shared that many of her students were interested in a career path that would not require a four-year college degree, but would still lead to a good job with benefits and decent pay. As a result, Ms. Mahoney and Ms. Phillips discussed jobs at the airport in facilities maintenance, food services, and flight-time management. They both were able to provide students with current and local information, not easily available from other sources.
Guest Speakers and More!
At this time of the year, CaLL's efforts are focused on our summer internship program. However, we offer many other services to teachers and students. In addition to guest speakers, CaLL recruits industry professionals to attend and present at career fairs, runs several mock interview events annually, arranges for workplace tours, and asks professionals if they can assist or judge student work. All of these career-related programs and services help LBUSD students to be prepared for success in college, careers, and life. Thank you to all of CaLL’s wonderful business partners who volunteer time to make these experiences possible. Quite literally, we couldn’t do it without you.
Founding Board Member Retires
Pete Davis, Assistant Superintendent of High Schools and a founding Board member of Long Beach CaLL, will retire at the end of the month. After 11 years with the Los Angeles Unified School District and 24 years with LBUSD in a variety of roles, Mr. Davis is moving on to his next adventure, which will include playing golf and spending more time with his family. CaLL appreciates not only his dedication to the organization, but also his dedicated commitment to the success of thousands of students, helping them thrive, academically and personally.   Thank you for everything, Mr. Davis!
