Preparing Girls for a Brighter Future
How does a young woman transform her dreams into reality? That was the subject for discussion on Saturday, March 2, 2019, when the Soroptimist International of Long Beach (SILB), in partnership with LBUSD, held its third  Dream It, Be It  workshop. Six successful, professional women, all members of SILB, spent the day mentoring 33 students in Jordan High School’s Female Leadership Academy.  In addition to fun activities, SILB members and the girls had meaningful conversations about setting and achieving goals, moving forward after setbacks or failures, and discovering career opportunities based on knowing who you are, as a person.

Soroptimist International is a service organization for professional women who work to improve the lives of women and girls. The Dream It, Be It  program is provided to young women by Soroptomist clubs all over the world. More than 20,000 girls in 14 countries and territories have benefitted from its female empowerment-centered curriculum. Girls come out with more confidence, new tools to overcome obstacles, and achievable goals for their future.
Special thanks go to the six wonderful SILB members (pictured left to right) – Julie Resner, Susan Berkman, Gail Wasil, Diane DeWalsche, Cyndi Snyder, and Alison Reid - who facilitated the day’s activities. They provided education, training, and tools that will help girls in Jordan High School’s Female Leadership Academy reach their full potential.
Career Pathway Conversations
Since its inception, Long Beach CaLL has provided guest speakers to teachers who request that someone visit their classroom and speak to their students on a career-related topic. Guest speakers help students understand the wide array of careers within a field, and what type of education and training is needed to enter and advance in the field. A new model was launched this month when CaLL was asked by Wilson and Poly high schools to facilitate meetings between LBUSD career pathway teachers and career professionals . For example, Doug Haubert (pictured above), Long Beach City Prosecutor, spoke with teachers in Wilson High School’s Public Service pathway. Todd Strong of Gulfstream chatted with teachers in Poly High School’s Engineering Design pathway.  These conversations gave the teachers a glimpse into current industry practice and sparked ideas on how they can support students to develop skills needed to be successful in their fields of interest. Teachers were eager to ask questions and business partners enjoyed sharing information that could have broad impact, as participating teachers share with their students what they learned from these conversations.

CaLL is excited that two more meetings using this model are scheduled for April and May at Poly High School. Industries that will be represented include media, architecture, arts, finance, and health. Long Beach CaLL would like to thank all nineteen industry professionals who have or will participate, for taking the time to engage in dialogue with our pathway teachers about creating a meaningful nexus between the classroom and a career path.
