2015 Ms. Alumni on her Homecoming Experience . . .

Najla (Saleem) Norwood 96'

My husband and I attend homecoming regularly, but this was truly one of my favorites.

I tried to do it all this year. I attended the Welcome cocktail party, the PAC Bowling, the state of the college meeting, the president's reception, the alumni day party, the LCNAA Social, the all black affair, the parade, the brunch, the football game, marched around the AKA plot with my Sorors and attended the Gala. Yes I'm still recuperating from homecoming!

I enjoyed seeing old friends. Coming back on campus takes me back to memories of my college days and friendships. I actually married my college friend, so it's amazing to think that my life now started from days at the Stone. My son started college this fall and I'm hoping that he too makes lifelong friends in college.

My homecoming moment was when it was announced at the LCNAA meeting that the Greensboro Chapter had won the annual Alumni King/Queen contest and I would be crowned 2015 Ms. Alumni. It was wonderful to ride a float in the parade. As fundraising chair for my chapter it was exciting to see all of the efforts of the chapter pay off.

LCNAA Blue Bear Updates . . .
Update from the President's Desk . . .
Dear Alumni and Friends,

By all accounts, Homecoming 2015 was a stellar event! Everything I observed was positive: both students and alumni were truly engaged and enjoying themselves as indicated by the broad smiles they flashed. From Thursday's activities through the Evening of Black and Blue Elegance, all of the Alumni who spoke to me complimented something that happened during the weekend. For all of this I am truly grateful to the many individuals who made this Homecoming such an incredible event.

The Homecoming Committee headed by Bruce Stanback did an outstanding job of planning and implementing the Convocation, the Tree Planting Ceremony, the Friday Night Social, our entry in the Parade, and the Evening of Black and Blue Elegance. Their efforts were clearly on display throughout the weekend. In addition to what was seen, there were so many contributions made by Board and committee members that were not seen yet were evident in the ease with which the weekend's activities flowed. I must commend Carmen Wilder, former alumni Affairs Director, and Candace Johnson, acting Alumni Affairs Director, for their efforts on the campus to satisfy our needs and make the campus hospitable.

I commend Bishop George E. Battle, Jr., Chairman of the Livingstone College Board of Trustees and Presiding Prelate of the A.M.E. Zion Church, for making time in his busy schedule to attend our Saturday afternoon General Alumni Meeting to express his support for our association and our efforts on behalf of our beloved Livingstone.  Additionally, I must thank our 12th President, Dr. Jimmy R. Jenkins for his informative State of the College address that gave us even more reason to have pride in our alma mater.

I offer a special thank you to all those who made this Homecoming a financial success for the LCNAA: the Homecoming Committee, Chapter Presidents, their kings and queens, their chapter members, other alumni and friends. The King and Queen contest and the Homecoming Raffle are our primary fundraisers, and therefore, their success is critical to the Association. Financial data and the names of the participants in the King and Queen Contest will be shared with you elsewhere in this publication.

Our LCNAA Treasurer Marshall Jackson and our Financial Secretary Jackie Thompson-Matthews deserve special recognition for sacrificing their own enjoyment and working so tirelessly throughout the entire weekend handling the Association's finances, including accepting dues, raffle ticket money and contributions, as well as selling raffle and dance tickets.

Everyone enjoyed the fantastic food and phenomenal fellowship. Winning the game against Fayetteville St. was but one of many unforgettable highlights of this weekend.  Once again, I thank all of you who planned, implemented or participated in this grand event. This was truly the Homecoming of the Century!

Delores Johnson, LCNAA President

It was great to come home, again . . .

Homecoming, in their own words . . .
We asked several alumni about their homecoming experience. Here is what they shared.

Evelyn McNeill

I truly enjoyed everything. I thought the A&T GHOE experience was awesome, but there is nothing like connecting and being a participator instead of an observer.

The first highlight was being with my classmates of 40 years (Class of 1975). I had thought not many of us would return, but an overwhelming number of us showed up. We really enjoyed each other; especially  Friday night at our dinner when we got a chance to reconnect and remember the good ole days.

The next highlight of Homecoming was winning the game. That last play of the game; a true Superbowl moment. I could have run all over the field on that one, but was too far away for once. I'm usually down there with them (LOL).

Mertice Williams

I think I enjoyed most the feeling of participating in a family reunion.
There were so many familiar faces and my class was celebrating our 35th class reunion. As my AKA line sister, Vickie Sadler Waller said, "we came in as strangers and left as family".

I attended the convocation at Varick, alumni/ class meeting at Tubman, and a party sponsored by the class of 1980 on FridayOn Saturday I attended the alumni brunch, then my class took our 1980 reunion picture in front of "The Bear". I
enjoyed the game, followed by serenading at the AKA plot and a reception afterward.

That evening my roommate, Sharon Patterson Stamps and I met with other classmates at the Hospitality Center for the LC National Alumni Dance.

I had a wonderful time with "my family" at LC!

Bruce Stanback

My Homecoming "Moment" had to, without a doubt, be the Evening of Black and Blue Elegance. The coming together of the different age groups in fellowship and dancing the night away was awesome!

Here is Bruce on YouTube guaranteeing a victory over the Broncos and a great homecoming weekend. Enjoy this short halftime LC marching band video here.
