The Back-to-School season is always a busy time for the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia, and this past quarter was no different.  What has made these past few months more interesting is our outreach to new audiences through regional, statewide and national activities.  Literacy is a national issue, with an impact on a broad number of issues including workforce training, economic development, social equity, immigration assimilation, U.S. citizenship, success in school, poverty, and on and on.  It would come as little surprise that members of the LCNV Board and Staff would be asked to participate in many events and discussions, and the connections continue to grow.

Melida Benagas graduated from LCNV's Family Learning Program this spring. Raised in Honduras in Central America, Melida spoke only Spanish before she moved to the United States in 2005. She enrolled in the Family Learning Program (FLP) at LCNV because she was determined to learn to read, write and speak better English.

LCNV Director of Academic and Student Affairs Dr. Carole Bausell recently attended a National Advancing Equity in Adult, Community College, and Career and Technical Education Symposium about advancing equity in adult education. Carole shares an insight.

Staff Spotlight: "The role of volunteers in promoting our cause is absolutely vital," says, Tess Fulton, LCNV's new Volunteer Coordinator

It has been said that the only constant is change. Here at LCNV we observe the effects of this cliché on a regular basis. From the different set of students each semester to the addition of new members to our staff, the force of change paves the way for improvement.

A Connecting Experience
Here at the LCNV we have a saying that we are all life-long learners. This year I have been learning about community. What is a community? By definition, it is a social group living in the same place or having particular characteristics in common. I think community is much more than just having characteristics in common. There is a bond that develops because of similar experiences and motivations that are shared in a group.
