Greetings,

It has been a whirlwind few weeks here at LCNV! Registrations are happening, a new staff member has been welcomed aboard, and I have been learning and absorbing so much in my short time here. I feel enormous gratitude for the warm welcome here at LCNV from Patti, the staff, and all of our supporters, volunteers, and learners. It has been great getting my feet wet in my new position as Executive Director, meeting fellow nonprofit leaders, new funders, and community groups. I am very lucky to have become part of such a compassionate and cooperative community. Your support is the reason why LCNV has been successful for over 55 years.

Sincerely,

Roopal Mehta Saran, Executive Director
CELEBRATING ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL YEAR
The end of the academic year provides an opportunity to reflect and contemplate on the LCNV's successes, improvements, and forward movement. June 30, 2017 marked the end of another great year at LCNV.

LCNV'S EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR ON INTERNATIONAL TELEVISION
LCNV's new Executive Director Roopal Mehta Saran appeared via Skype for Alhurra's Al Youm news program to speak about the importance of literacy on International Literacy Day 2017. The program was broadcasted in Arabic across 22 countries. Watch the video (and brush up on your Arabic) via the link below.

NOVIE'S "GOVERNMENT AND NONPROFITS" EVENTS
In partnership with the Northern Virginia Idea Exchange (NoVIE), the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia sponsored two events with Virginia's leading gubernatorial candidates.  It was a pleasure partnering with NoVIE to host both events!

INTRODUCING CELL-ED
Cell-Ed, a mobile skills-development platform, came to the attention of the Literacy Council staff recently and has shown great promise as another tool for English language learners. The process is simple: a Spanish-speaking LCNV student uses their cell phone to begin a 20 hour course over text message. Courses can be completed on a student's schedule, making extra lessons accessible outside of classroom time.
