Message from Wally ~

Good news!

I am pleased and proud to announce grant funds from Redbud Health Care District (RBHCD) for core services through LCOE's Healthy Start Program. RBHCD, as in years past, provides much needed funding for Healthy Start to increase access to health care for students and families in the Konocti and Middletown School Districts. We are grateful to have RBHCD as our partner in providing much needed resources. We appreciate RBHCD's long-term commitment to the children and families of Lake County.

LCFF/LCAP

School Districts and LCOE continue to move forward in implementing Local Control Accountability Planss on a very tight timeline. The implementation of the new Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) requires all School Districts and County Offices to develop a Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) aligned to their budget. Both plans require School Board approval prior to being submitted to the County Office for review. While our timeline is extremely tight in this first year of implementation, it will allow us to decide at the local level, clearly what we want to do with the resources we have available. All LCAPs are now being developed after significant input from various constituencies. Participants include: parents, parent groups, students, staff, employee groups, and community members. It is truly exciting to have the opportunity to implement new ideas and initiatives in education. Thank you to all who have participated in this new and exciting process.

Thanks and have a good weekend!

Wally

Lower Lake High School Automotive Program Receives Donation from LCOE
The students in the LLHS automotive repair program are excited about bringing life back to the car formerly utilized by Superintendent, Wally Holbrook. When it was discovered that repairs to keep the car running exceeded the value of the car, Brock Falkenberg offered it to LLHS Teacher, Bill Gabe, for a student project. They assured us that they are up for the challenge!

Meet Victoria Garrison
AmeriCorps Specialist
By Laurie Allen

In the words of her peers she is passionate, stubborn, witty, dependable, and overachiever. In her own words, if she believes in something (or someone) she cannot be budged!  We've decided to explore these
"Victoria" attributes.

Passionate
About her kids - she is the mother of 5 and the grandmother of 6.
About her work - Victoria's journey to an AmeriCorps staff member began as a volunteer in her son's school.  That led to going back to school to become a teacher. "In 2006, a dear friend recommended AmeriCorps. My first year I served at Oak Hill Middle school and I was hooked. AmeriCorps brought me out of my shell, although the jury is still out if that is a good thing or not." Her AmeriCorps service started with tutoring students in school and after school, then she became a team leader helping other members be successful at their sites, and now she is training (plus a whole list of other duties as needed). "Two years ago, when the opportunity to become staff presented itself, it seemed too good to be true. This is my dream job and I am grateful to do what I love!"

Stubborn
Victoria was on her own at 13 and a mother at 17. "Growing up in poverty and abuse taught me I had nothing to give. Through much work, I have learned that I am not bound by the restrictions of my past and that I can change and become a person that contributes to society. But much more than that, I can help other women know that they have value and can be whatever they want to be. I want to make sure other women come along with me."

Do not tell her that you have nothing to contribute or you have no purpose, because Victoria is just stubborn enough to help you find both.

Witty
Perhaps it's all the reading she loves to do, or the brain games she plays, but I think it just comes naturally to Victoria. When asked, "Why Lake County?" she replied, " Why not Lake County? Circumstances brought me here when our youngest son was one month old. But I believe you should grow where you are planted, and I am happy that Lake County has welcomed me and given me a chance to work with such a wonderful group of people." She credits AmeriCorps for moving her from the back of the room, shy and quiet, to the middle of the crowd and now sometimes at the forefront of the group.

Dependable
Hands down, you can count on her - that's common knowledge. She trains, does the office work, sets up new members, support the members, and manages multiple 'hats' every day. She is always looking for ways to mesh her work with other agencies and maximize the efforts of all.  Cindy Adams, LCOE Child Development Director has this to say: "Victoria has a strong work ethic and takes initiative to complete tasks and assignments, often staying long past her work day.  She works diligently to ensure her supervisor's success.  She does not need reminders from her supervisor on what needs to be done, often she is the one reminding. Victoria finds ways to make things happen no matter how high the hurdles are in front of her."

Overachiever
As if what you have learned so far is not enough, there's more. She loves to volunteer: Emergency Services to help in a crisis, Tango-Mike, church, Lake County Fair (handles admissions for the fair), committee after committee...... She once dreamed of being a teacher working with older kids, now if she were to grow beyond her current job she could see herself being a social worker.  In her spare time there's reading (loves her Kindle), crafting, sewing, crocheting, raising chickens, playing brain games and watching movies.

Our exploration has confirmed that passionate, stubborn, witty, dependable and overachiever with a pinch of  joyful, loyal, creative, and dreamer = Victoria Garrison.

April is Earthquake Preparedness Month
Are you ready?

April is Earthquake Preparedness Month, it has been recognized since the April 1906 San Francisco earthquake and continues to be supported by the State Assembly urging all Californians and government agencies to engage in education, evaluation of seismic hazards, mitigation, safety activities, and the exchange of information related to earthquake preparedness with other states and nations.

Surprisingly, many Californians don't consider themselves at risk unless they live on or near the line of a well-known fault, such as the San Andreas or Hayward Fault. This misconception leaves millions of Californians unprepared for an earthquake. Read More Get tips and information from CalOES
