Moon Rocks at Coyote Valley Elementary School

Students in Kathy Scavone's fourth grade class became docents of the moon when they gave "moon tours" to hundreds of students at Coyote Valley Elementary School.

Scavone took a class at NASA Ames Research Center to allow her to borrow and interpret our country's national treasures, the lunar samples, or moon rocks, to students... Read more at Lake County News here.

Lessons in Nurturing the Family

Nurturing Parenting Program provides tips, support and resources for Lake County parents.

Mirella sounds like many parents when she describes ongoing friction with her daughter. Arguments happen over homework, household chores and bickering with siblings.

Mirella is a mother of six and she found it difficult to take care of her own needs, which left little empathy for her family. Then her local school, through Healthy Start, invited her to the Nurturing Parenting program. She attended every class offered, bringing her adult daughters and their young children as well. And things began to change.

Families go home with these items each week, designed to encourage a family bonding night such as family game night, or family movie night.

Family Fooducation Fair at Pomo School - a Huge Success

Pomo Elementary School held its first Family Fooducation Fair on February 27th. This event was organized by fifth grade teacher, Shane Lee. Many community members were present offering families advice on healthy eating and cooking presentations were also offered.

Lake County Office of Education's Healthy Start Program, Lake Family Resource Center, Lakeview Market, Bright Start, Lower Lake High School, Yuba College, Lake County Office of Education Kid Connection, Kindergarten Teacher Jennifer Barry, North Coast Opportunities, Tribal Health and the Lake County Community Co-Op all participated in this great family evening event.

Cooking presenters included Chic Le Chef, Yuba College and Lower Lake High School.

The evening offered lots of good nutritious food samples and many door prizes donated by local food markets. Amazingly, over 250 people attended the Family Fooducation Fair! It was such a success Mr. Lee plans on making it an annual event. Thank you, Mr. Lee, for your leadership in supporting our families in their efforts to make healthy food choices!

LCOE Program Offers High School Diploma for Qualifying Veterans, Japanese American WWII Internees

A special program offered by the Lake County Office of Education is giving veterans and internees the opportunity to receive long-overdue high school diplomas.

Many people were unable to graduate with their high school class due to military service in World War II (Dec. 7, 1941-Dec. 31, 1946), the Korean War (June 25, 1950-Jan. 31, 1955), or the Vietnam War (Feb. 28, 1961-May 7, 1975), or because they were interned in WWII relocation centers for Japanese Americans, the Lake County Office of Education reported.

These individuals may now receive their high school diplomas from the Lake County Office of Education Operation Recognition program.

Wishes come true
at Middletown Early Connection Preschool

Lake County Office of Education's Middletown Early Connection Preschool has been the recipient of some greatly appreciated and needed items. Very special people from the Hidden Valley Community Church reached out to our Middletown preschool Site Supervisor, Liberty Perry, asking if they could help with supplies for the preschool classroom.  Liberty brought this wonderful news to her staff and they worked on a wish list of both small and large wishes for the preschool.

In January the members of the Hidden Valley Community Church delivered sand to fill the sand tables!  In February they returned again, this time with two huge bags of children's books and informed Liberty that they had ordered more books with the money that remained from their book drive! This month the church is raising money for a basketball hoop that will be placed in our playground.  The next plans include restocking the bark where our climbing structure is located.
