VITAL CHECK & DEPOSIT ISSUES

Every day the frontline handles routine matters that can cost your credit union thousands of dollars in the event of an error.  Standard operational and day-to-day dealings with your members may lead your institution into liability without anyone's knowledge until there is a lawsuit. Even when the answer seems an easy one, it can sometimes lead you into unexpectedly tricky territory. Don't take chances; come learn the correct answers and the reasons behind them.

In this program, Debbie Crawford will walk attendees through the 10 Simple Rules to Handle Checks that will save you worry, litigation and money.

Some things that we will discuss will include:

  • Can one member deposit into another member's account?
  • Can a personal check be deposited into a business account?
  • Can you deposit a minor's check into a parent's account (or vice versa)?
  • Can the owner of a business cash a check made to the business?  Can they get "less cash" on a deposit?
  • What is a Third Party Check and what can we do with it?
  • Can we pay a stale dated item?
  • Can we deposit a check made payable to a deceased member into his or her joint account?
  • What does "FBO" mean on a check?
  • How should someone with a POA document endorse a check?
  • How do we handle checks made out to a member who has passed away?
  • Can an authorized signer, agent or convenience signer on a personal account cash a paycheck against that account?
  • Can an authorized signer get a balance? Can they remove all the money from an account?
  • And so much more....

Debbie intends to make this program as interactive as possible.  Do you have burning questions you've always wanted clarification on?  Debbie wants to hear them!  Come armed with your questions or feel free to submit them in advance to education@lcul.com and we will pass them on to Debbie in advance.

Marketing Materials Available for CU Youth Week

Credit unions are encouraged to participate in CUNA's National Credit Union Youth Month, which will be held in April. Credit Union Youth Month promotes the benefits of youth saving and goal-setting by inviting young members to open savings accounts and make deposits throughout the year.

This year's theme is "Wild About Saving," and promotional materials are now available on CUNA's website.

Because Financial Literacy Month also occurs during April, credit unions are encouraged to incorporate financial education initiatives with their Credit Union Youth Month efforts. CUNA will also be hosting the National Youth Saving Challenge during the entire month, rewarding 25 savers with $100 cash prizes. Last year, 8,844 new accounts were opened, and 94,466 young members deposited more than $20.5 million into savings accounts during the challenge.

CMG Delivers Live Chat to Simplify Insurance for Consumers

CUNA Mutual Group has launched a new, real-time service to help simplify the purchase of personal insurance products for credit union members. TruStage Connect is a live video and text chat for the life and accidental death and dismemberment insurance offered through trustage.com. It also leverages the expertise of licensed insurance agents who can share their screen with the consumer to help them navigate the website to shop for insurance.

"Expanding the TruStage customer experience to include live chat is a direct reflection of our continued focus on today's consumer," said Susan Sachatello, senior vice president, TruStage. "We care about making it easier for them to evaluate and choose insurance that best fits their needs. Through live chat, our licensed experts simplify the task of choosing and buying life insurance."

The new live video chat service is one of the first of its kind in the insurance industry, connecting consumers with a licensed agent as they browse the website to shop for insurance products. It's also the latest example of the company's ongoing commitment to consumer-focused initiatives and innovation.

"Today's consumer has high expectations based on their experiences with retail consumer brands," said Sachatello. "TruStage Connect is one more way we're delivering on those expectations and making it even simpler for credit union members to protect their families."
