LCUL Submits Comment Letter to NCUA Re: New Payday Alternative Loan
Federal credit union members could have more options for short-term, small-dollar borrowing under a rule proposed by NCUA.

The proposed rule would create one new product in addition to the current payday loan alternative that has been available to federally chartered credit unions since 2010.

Baton Rouge CUs Gather for Meet & Greet with Rep. Graves

LCUL arranged a special meet and greet for credit unions in the Baton Rouge area with Representative Garret Graves on Monday at Neighbors FCU. Credit unions spoke on the cooperative nature within the movement and the many ways we help serve members of the community. Graves engaged in conversations about the recent changes in infrastructure and funding for additional flood projects. "We have a lot of work to do, but we are making progress. We are finding solutions," noted Graves.

As Rep. Graves toured the facility,he surprised members conducting transactions through the ITMs by joining the automated tellers on screen. He even helped a recent high school graduate cash in her coins as they talked about her plans to attend Southeastern University in the fall.

Special thanks to the credit unions who joined League representatives: Neighbors FCU (host), Baton Rouge Telco FCU, Campus FCU, EFCU Financial, La Capitol FCU, and Pelican State CU..

YPN Silent Auction Accepting Donations
The Young Professionals Network (YPN) is excited to coordinate the return of the silent auction during LCUL's convention in New Orleans. The proceeds from the auction will be evenly split between the Louisiana CU Foundation and YPN education initiatives.

Over the last 12 months, the Young Professionals Network has used our portion of the proceeds for educational opportunities like:
  • International Credit Union Day: Financial Literacy - Young Professionals read and donated 800 Berenstain Bears' Trouble with Money to elementary students across the state.
  • FREE Boot Camps - Three FREE Boot Camps were launched in Baton Rouge, Lake Charles, and Monroe to present 'Leadership From Any Level' to 65 Louisiana Young Professionals.
  • Crash opportunities - Supported two Louisiana YP's as they crashed the GAC in Washington DC
Interested in Helping Support YPN and Foundation?  Send us your donations! Your credit union will receive recognition for any item(s) that it donates. For each item in the auction, the corresponding bidding sheet will give recognition to the donating credit union or organization. Ideas for auction items are not limited to home décor, family outdoor games, destination gift certificates, spirits, and gift baskets...we're open to anything!

Those interested in donating can contact Angela Melle with the League. The Young Professionals Network, along with the Louisiana Foundation, appreciate your consideration in making a donation.

Louisiana FCU Named Top Workplace, Receives Top Honors Third Consecutive Year
Louisiana FCU has been awarded a 2018 Top Workplaces honor by The Times-Picayune. The list is based solely on employee feedback gathered through a third party survey administered by research partner Energage, LLC (formerly WorkplaceDynamics), a leading provider of technology-based employee engagement tools. The anonymous survey measures several aspects of workplace culture, including alignment, execution, and connection, just to name a few.

"Top Workplaces is more than just recognition," said Doug Claffey, CEO of Energage. "Our research shows organizations that earn the award attract better talent, experience lower turnover, and are better equipped to deliver bottom-line results. Their leaders prioritize and carefully craft a healthy workplace culture that supports employee engagement."

"What an honor to be named a Top Workplace for the third consecutive year," said Rhonda Hotard, CEO of Louisiana FCU. "We are deliberate in our commitment to provide an environment that contributes to our employees' well-beings and positive work place culture." Hotard contributes the Credit Union's success to its staff, exclaiming, "I always say our employees are the core of everything we do right! If we were a wonderful gumbo, they would be the roux."

Neighbors Contributes $21,383 to Local Schools Through Mascot Checking Program
Neighbors contributed a combined $21,383 to 11 participating schools during the 2017-2018 school year. The funds came from Neighbors Mascot Checking Program, which invites schools within Greater Baton Rouge to participate by allowing Neighbors to create a custom checking account for the school.

Neighbors President and CEO Steve Webb said, "This program continues to see tremendous growth, and we are pleased to provide a consistent revenue source for local education."

The checking accounts come with a school-branded debit card and Neighbors contributes money to the school for each debit card swipe. After the school has 100 active Mascot Checking accounts, the school earns ten cents per swipe, and the schools earn five cents per swipe before the first 100 active accounts.

Walker High School earned the most contributions this year with $10,120.  "I am very thankful to Neighbors for the Mascot Checking Account program," Walker High School Principal Jason St. Pierre said. "We used this money to help fund various programs such as our drone and TV program."

In addition to receiving contributions generated from the checking account program, the participating schools are invited to select a graduating student to receive college tuition assistance from the Neighbors Capital Area Foundation. Next year the foundation plans to grant $30,000 through the Neighbors Way Tuition Assistance Award.
