Up to $2 million Available in NCUA's Second 2015 Grant Round

NCUA

The National Credit Union Administration will make up to $2 million available to low-income credit unions in the second round of Community Development Revolving Loan Fund grants for 2015, the agency announced this week.

NCUA will accept applications from June 1 through June 30 at 5:00 p.m. Credit unions may find more information or apply online  here. Applicants may apply in each of the four grant categories but the award maximum is $24,000.

  • Building Capacity and Growth. NCUA plans to award grants up to $24,000 to credit unions interested in opening a new branch in underserved areas or relocating from a home-based to a non-residential location.
  • Digital Growth. Up to $10,000 will be available for each eligible credit union to offer digital products to members, such as electronic bill payment, an interactive website, mobile or home banking, electronic or digital signatures, mobile or online loan applications, and remote deposit capture.
  • Fraud Prevention and Cybersecurity. New for 2015, NCUA will provide up to $7,500 to each eligible credit union to assist in developing its fraud prevention and cybersecurity efforts. Credit unions may use funds for cybersecurity training, to convert debit or credit cards to EMV technology, or obtain a system's test or risk assessment.
  • New Product Service Development. NCUA plans to award individual grants of up to $10,000 to credit unions that want to offer a new product or service such as implementation of a member business lending program, installation of a new ATM, or an asset-liability management model.

Congress approved $2 million this year for NCUA's Community Development Revolving Loan Fund, the single largest technical assistance appropriation in the history of the fund.

Large Deposits Made During CU Youth Week

What a fantastic year for Youth Month and the National Youth Saving Challenge?! Credit union staff took members young and old on a savings safari with this year's theme-Wild About Saving?. Branches transformed into jungles before youth's eyes, while staff members excited them with activities and prizes all month long. One of these financial activities was the National Youth Saving Challenge?.

Affiliated credit unions were encouraged to report their results for National Youth Month. During the month of April, 235 credit unions saw more than $23.5 million deposited by 125,188 youth, an average of almost $200 per child. We are proud to say that Louisiana credit unions total youth deposits were more than $628,200.

In 2009, the National Youth Saving Challenge was extended to run for the entire month of April, and this year, National Credit Union Youth Week? followed suit to become National Credit Union Youth Month?. Youth Month was a smashing success in its first year.

News from CUNA Mutual

May 2015 CU Trends Report now available online

CUNA Mutual Group's Credit Union Trends Report for May 2015 is now available online and can be accessed in the CU Products & Services section of our website, under the heading Research & InformationDuring March, the economy added 85,000 jobs, the unemployment rate remained at 5.5%, personal income stagnated with zero growth, consumer prices climbed 0.2%, consumer confidence rose, new home sales fell 11.4%, existing home sales rose 6.1%, home prices rose 2%, and the 10-year Treasury interest rate increased 6 basis points to average 2.04%.

Additional highlights of this month's report include:

  • During March, credit unions picked up 496,000 new memberships, credit union loan balances grew at an annualized 11% pace, bonuses and tax refunds boosted deposit balances 0.4%, firms hired 85,000 workers, the existing home market picked up steam, long-term interest rates rose, and the Federal Reserve did not waver from their belief that economic growth will accelerate.
  • At the end of February, CUNA's monthly estimates reported 6,424 CUs in operation, down 13 CUs from one month earlier. Year-to-date the number of credit unions declined by 89, greater than the 60 lost in the first three months of 2014.
  • Credit union savings balances rose over the one trillion dollar mark in March, the first time in credit union history. March is historically the second strongest month for savings growth due to tax refunds and bonuses. Expect savings balances to fall below one trillion dollars in April as members pay their tax bills.
  • The nation's CUs increased their loan portfolios 0.6% in March, slightly less than the 0.65% pace reported in March 2014. During the last 12 months, credit union loan portfolios increased 10.6%, the fastest pace since December 2005, which illustrates the roughly decade long credit cycle.
  • Credit union memberships rose a robust 496,000 in March, or 0.5% month-over-month, up from 380,000 reported in March 2014, or 0.4%, to reach 102.8 million. The underlying annualized membership growth rate is now 4.0%, the highest since March 1997.
  • Credit union loan delinquency rates fell to 0.74% in March, down from 0.81% one year earlier. This is the lowest delinquency rate since August 2007, the date economists use to mark the beginning of the mortgage crisis.
