FROM THE CEO

Dear Volunteers, Members, Girl Scouts and Staff:

Summer camp season is in full swing, and last week I visited several of the council's outstanding Volunteer Day Camps in Santa Maria, Atascadero, Salinas and Felton.  In Santa Maria, our fabulous volunteers Kimberlee Quinonez and Angie Blackburn were building 'Fearless Females' - offering sessions with females engineers, a female race car driver, a female chef, and many other adult female role models.  At El Toro Day Camp in Atascadero, a girl-led program with a theme of 'Faraway Lands,' Karen Skole and I received a tour from two outstanding girl Assistant Directors, Honey Bee and Bam Bam (camp names).  These outstanding Girl Scouts are attending UC San Diego for English, and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for Political Science respectively this fall - examples of the fine leaders that Girl Scouts develop!  'That's Entertainment,' was the theme for the excellent Cuesta del Norte Day Camp in Atascadero ran by Amanda Bean and Teesha Hahn. Girls learned costuming, acting, scriptwriting, set design, and rehearsed all week for a Friday peformance for parents.  I especially enjoyed the make-up area. The day we visited, they were making 'scary faces,' so there were lots of campers with scars and black eyes running around - all pretend, of course!  Karen and I also enjoyed dancing the Cupid Shuffle with the campers, too!  We also visited Henry Cowell Day camp, run by Nancy Cooper (Dolphin), with a theme of 'Circus Carnival.'  I was impressed with the fairy houses built by the campers, and we enjoyed an outstanding taco dinner in the woods.  Visit the council Facebook page to see pictures from the various camps.  Thanks to all the camp staff for their hospitality during our visits.

In addition, I visited our Alisal Program Center in Salinas, where for the first time, we are offering a summer camp for local girls.  I was really impressed by the outstanding program that my staff has developed at this center where girls are enjoying a summer literacy program, and taking field trips.

Last month, I also had the opportunity to participate in a Gold Award ceremony in Newbury Park for Danise Kluss and Pooja Patel, from Troop 60447.  Dani's project, The Science Must Go On, was a theater program she introduced to a third grade class in a STEM-focused elementary school in order to introduce the arts to these students.  Pooja's developed and implemented a project, Learn, Explore and Discover (LEAD), a tutoring program delivered by high school students for at-risk middle schoolers.  These impressive young women are off to college -  Pooja is attending USC and Dani is attending Cal Lutheran - again, excellent examples of the girls we all represent!  A big-shout out to Pam Winters, the Troop Leader of these outstanding young ladies.

When I visit with our Girl Scouts, and the volunteers that give of their time freely to deliver Girl Scout program, I am reminded why I do what I do - doing my part to ensure we are developing our future female leaders.  We have such an important mission, and I thank our volunteers and my staff for making it all happen!

On a final note, I would like to ask that you consider providing your support to the council by voting for Team Caliente who will be competing at the Oxnard Salsa Festival in a charitable dance contest.  Each vote is one dollar, and GSCCC Board Chair, Tammie Helmuth, is dancing for Girl Scouts of California's Central Coast.  There are many ways you can support the council, details are included in this newsletter, as well as, much more information on membership and program!

I wish all of you a wonderful Girl Scout summer!

Sincerely,

Gina Jaeger

Chief Executive Officer
