LEADERSHIP LESSONS WE CAN LEARN FROM NELSON MANDELA

Last week, I was astonished to hear about the death of Nelson Mandela.  Like many others across the world, I took some time to reflect on the life of this incredible leader.  During this time of reflection, I heard countless prominent men and women speak highly about his character as a leader.  I was touched by the array of wisdom used by this man to enrich and inspire the lives of others,  was empowered by the positive transformation that Mr. Mandela's life had on people all across the world, and was grateful for the life and leadership of this incredible leader.

All things considered, I earnestly believe that Nelson Mandela is one of the most influential, powerful, and best example of great leadership within our generation.   He modeled the attributes of great leadership, had the courage to tackle monumental problems in the world, was willing to make personal sacrifices for justice and equality, lived for the well-being of others so that they could have a better life, grew daily as a man and leader, and most importantly, his life left a positive mark on the lives of others all across the world.  As we move forward into the 21st Century, I believe that we can learn a great deal of powerful leadership lessons from the life of Nelson Mandela.

For the next few moments, I would like to share with you seven lessons of leadership that I have been able to extract from the life of this impactful world leader.

Leadership Lesson One

Great Leaders Forgive

The first lesson I've learned from the life of Nelson Mandela is that great leaders are able to forgive others.  When you study the life of Mr. Mandela, he was able to forgive people who did him wrong while forgiving them so that he was able to actually work with his enemies to fulfill his purpose in the earth.

As leaders of the 21st Century, if we are truly going to make an impact, we must be so focused on our vision so that we are able to set aside our negative experiences.  This way we can forgive those that hurt us and build towards accomplishing our purpose on the earth.

Leadership Lesson Two

Great Leaders Exemplify the Power of Service

The second lesson I learned from the life of Nelson Mandela is that great leaders exemplify the power of service.  When I look at the life of Mr. Mandela, I see a man of service to his people and the cause.  He was able to overcome great challenges and obstacles in life because he was committed to helping the men and women who he served as a leader.

As leaders of the 21st Century, if we are going to make an impact, we must use the model of servant leadership.  This model leads to positive change in lives of others and enables us to overcome some of the most challenging situations and circumstances.

Leadership Lesson Three

Great Leaders Tackle Great Challenges

The third lesson I learned from the life of Nelson Mandela is that great leaders have the courage to tackle enormous challenges.  When you think about great leaders such as Mr. Mandela, you witness men and women who had the courage and faith to attack some of the greatest challenges of their lifetime.

As leaders of the 21st Century, if we are going to make an impact, we must be individuals who are willing to address, develop solutions, and attack some of the greatest challenges of our generation.

Leadership Lesson Four

Great Leaders are Collaborators

The fourth lesson I learned from the life of Nelson Mandela is that great leaders are effective collaborators.  Great leaders have the incredible ability to motivate, inspire, and empower others.  In addition, they are extremely effective at bringing people together for a specific cause or common purpose.

As leaders of the 21st Century, if we are going to make an impact, we must be individuals who understand that great leadership does not manifest because of one person.  It manifests because one person is willing to join with others, work with others, and collaborate with others in order to fulfill an inspired shared vision.

Leadership Lesson Five

Great Leaders Lead with Humility

The fifth lesson I learned from the life of Nelson Mandela is that great leaders lead with humility.  Mr. Mandela made a positive impact on the world are able to do so because they are not focused on themselves, they are focused on the task and people they have been purposed to serve as a leader.

As leaders of the 21st Century, if we are going to make an impact, we must be individuals who lead with humility by placing the focus of our leadership more on the task and people we have been destined to serve than our personal accolades.  When this is accomplished, we will begin to see the impact of this powerful leadership lesson modeled by Nelson Mandela.

Leadership Lesson Six

Great Leaders Reflect, Learn, and Evolve

The sixth lesson I learned from the life of Nelson Mandela is great leaders reflect, learn, and evolve as leaders.  When I took some time to reflect on the life of Mr. Mandela, I see a man who not only believes in education, but is willing to reflect, learn from mistakes, and make the proper adjustments in order to emerge as leader.

As leaders of the 21st Century, if we are going to make an impact, we must be individuals who take the time to reflect on our experience as leaders, educate ourselves on ways that can help us become more effective in our area of expertise, and be willing to make the change necessary to become better leaders and human beings.

Leadership Lesson Seven

Great Leaders Lead with Love

The seventh and greatest lesson I learned from the life of Nelson Mandela is great leaders lead with love. When I think about great leaders such as Nelson Mandela, they manifest the power of love as a leader because they have learned how to really lead with love.

As leaders of the 21st Century, if we are going to make an impact, we must develop the right perspective of love and learn how to truly lead with love.  This foundation is what great leaders build the shared vision with their followers.

To help you understand the power of this vitally important leadership attribute, I have provided you with a quick snippet of my keynote presentation on the power of leading with love at Old Dominion University.
