Saving a Memorial: Soldiers' and Sailors' in Progress
LERA's engineers are hard at work on the restoration of the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument in Riverside Park. Built in 1902, the memorial commemorates soldiers and sailors who fought for the Union in the Civil War. LERA proposed using a personnel lift to place surveyors on top of the monument, from which they rappelled down to inspect the exterior for damage and defects. LERA is working with architect Perkins Eastman on this project, along with contractors Pullman and Vertical Access.

In addition to LERA's work as the structural engineer for WTC 4, LERA was involved in the structural design of a number of the 108 retail outfits, including the 40,000-sf Eataly, an all-in-one Italian market located above the lobby of WTC 4; the new multi-level Banana Republic, for which LERA designed an architecturally exposed steel stair; and the new Victoria's Secret flagship store.

Ksenia Tretiakova was recently profiled as LERA's Engineer of the Moment. Ksenia is currently excited to be working on the Solidiers' and Sailors' Monument, for which Ksenia was charged with leading the surveying and structural analysis of its restoration. “My favorite feature of the Memorial is the middle dome of the tower,” she explained. “It was created from a series of long, thin stacked tiles, an ingenious yet simple technique brought over from Spain by the architect Guastavino in the 19th Century. The tiles are nothing special by themselves, but when joined together, they have an incredible combined strength that stands the test of time."
