The new
NYU Langone Health Helen L. and Martin S. Kimmel Pavilion was awarded the 2019 ACEC NY EEA Diamond Award for Structural Systems, the highest category honor of the annual awards program highlighting engineering excellence. LERA was the structural engineer for the 21-story, 830,000-sf world-class patient care center. The architect is Ennead in association with NBBJ. The MEP Engineer, Jaros, Baum & Boles, also won a Diamond Award for Building Systems.
Located on the banks of the East River in Manhattan, the Kimmel Pavilion is situated on a constrained and crowded site that presented numerous structural challenges and complexities.

Construction of Temple University Library Nears Completion
|
Construction is progressing rapidly at the new
Charles Library at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA, slated to open in Fall 2019. The block-long, 225,000-sf library will feature a 3-story domed atrium with clear spans up to 100 ft and a building-wide green roof. The architect is Snøhetta/Stantec JV.

Northwell Health Core
Laboratory Opens in Queens
|
The $47.7 million
Clinical Laboratory of New York in Queens, an alliance between Northwell Health and NYC Health + Hospitals, opened in February. The LEED-silver facility has become the largest nonprofit, hospital-operated lab in the United States, set to process over 50 million tests annually.
LERA led the structural design of the 2-story, 36,000-sf laboratory facility. The architect is Flad Architects.

Hospital Breaks Ground
|
On March 21st,
construction broke ground at the new Coney Island Hospital in Brooklyn. The construction is part of a $922 million plan to repair hurricane damage and protect the city-owned and operated hospital from future storms. LERA is the structural engineer for the new 11-story patient tower and campus renovation. The architect is NBBJ.

UIC Center for the Arts Competition Design Named
One of Three Finalists
|
LERA is part of one of three finalist design teams for the
UIC Center of the Arts Competition at the University of Illinois at Chicago. The unique design of two distinct inverted, stacked volumes, connected by a common podium with a winter garden, features a concert hall and a theater. The architects are Johnston Marklee and UrbanWorks.

High Tech Tower Featured at Autodesk University 2019

LERA's work on the High Tech Tower in Luanda, Angola was recently featured on Autodesk University's website as part of their launch for AU 2019 in Las Vegas, NV. Titled "
LERA Advances Engineering with Computational Design," the article highlights how computational design and virtual reality proved key to optimizing the structural design of the mixed-use tower. The architect is Carlos Zapata Studio.
Every year,
Autodesk University brings together 10,000 professionals from construction, manufacturing, architecture, engineering and media creation for four days of learning and exchange.

The
Lotte World Tower in Seoul, South Korea was recently named #1 on Emporis's list of the world's top 10 skyscrapers of 2018. Standing at 555 m tall, the tower is currently the fifth tallest building in the world. The architect is Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates.

The new 83-acre Brooklyn Bridge Park won the
2018 ASLA Award of Excellence, the top honor at the American Society of Landscape Architect's annual awards program. Designed by MVVA, the 20-year project has completely transformed Downtown Brooklyn's waterfront.

LERA+, our in-house computational design and research group, was recently filmed by Redshift Video for a feature on their website. In it, the team discuss their exciting, innovative work and recent projects.
LERA+ provided computational design services for two new sculptures by artist James Clar: "
Foreigner" and "
Gravitational Collapse." Both polygonal sculptures are composed of multiple LED lights and metal rods. LERA+ created a custom plugin for Rhino that automated the design of complex connections between the lights and rods, saving the artist time and cost.

New Addition Tops Out at
NYC SCA's PS 144 Q School
|
Construction of the new $52.4 million, 56,600-sf addition to the
Public School 144 in Queens, NY topped out on October 16th. The 4-story addition to the existing Colonel Jeromus Remsen School, originally built in 1931, will house 26 new classrooms, an entrance lobby, an outdoor play area, a cafeteria, offices and a medical suite. LERA is the structural engineer for new additions to both PS 144 Q and PS 131 Q. The architect is Urbahn Architects.

Johnson & Burgee's AT&T Building Featured as "AD Classic"
|
ArchDaily recently featured the
AT&T Building (now the Sony Tower) as one of their "AD Classics." The iconic office tower, designed by Philip Johnson and John Burgee and completed in 1984, is defined by its distinct "Chippendale" roof design and a soaring 7-story atrium, transforming the New York City skyline at a time when nondescript glass office towers were the norm. LERA led the structural design of the tower, which features a series of stiffening trusses at the top and bottom of the building.

The combination SEArch+/Apis Cor team won first place out of 11 teams in Phase 3 of NASA's
3D-Printed Mars Habitat Challenge. The challenge, which began in 2015, is structured in phases, each with multiple levels. LERA is the structural peer reviewer for the design.

With LERA since 1994, Rich currently leads many of LERA’s residential, mixed-use and office developments in the Northeast and internationally, and has been responsible for significant firm growth within that market sector. Rich’s active projects include luxury residential towers in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Jersey City and Philadelphia. Rich served as Project Director for the structural design of

As the Responsible Engineer in Charge (REIC) for
Engineers Without Borders (EWB) NY Chapter’s Rubaya Program, he traveled to Rubaya, Rwanda in March of 2018 to oversee the manual construction of a maize processing facility. This trip was the culmination of a year-long planning, design, and coordination effort, done entirely pro-bono.

LERA's latest "Engineer of the Moment" is Rick Naumann! A native of Rochester, NY, Rick joined LERA as a Design Engineer in 2011 and was promoted to Associate in 2016. Based in LERA's New York office, Rick is one of our most traveled engineers. In 2016, he relocated to LERA's office in Shanghai, China for six months, helping to open the new Hong Kong office during that time, and returned in 2018 for another four months. Rick also earned his master's degree from The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) in Lausanne, Switzerland, which he credits for instilling in him an international perspective at a young age.

Capitol Crossing was prominently featured in the "
State of Downtown 2018," an economic development report produced by the DowntownDC Business Improvement District. The report presents data and analysis on several economic sectors in downtown Washington, D.C. Capitol Crossing, which will create three new city blocks, will completely transform downtown D.C. On January 10th, students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's civil engineering program visited LERA's office in New York City to learn more about the structural engineering industry. After a brief presentation and
VR demo, LERA led the students on a tour of the nearby
4 World Trade Center, for which LERA was the structural engineer.
4 WTC won the 2017 AISC IDEAS2 Presidential Award of Excellence in Engineering, one of the highest honors for structural design.

On October 7th, members from LERA's Mumbai office participated in
CTBUH's 2018 Global Walking Tour #5. Organized by the CTBUH India Chapter, the theme of the tour was "Bombay to Mumbai," covering 10 tall buildings in South Mumbai. About 250-300 total professionals attended the tour.
Part of the tour included a stop at
Ruby Tower, for which LERA provided schematic design and peer review services. The architect was FXCollaborative and Access Architects. Along with the project team, LERA gave a brief presentation to the group.

Several of LERA's engineers are actively involved in this year's
ACE Mentor Program in New York City. The ACE Mentor Program is a not-for-profit organization that helps prepare high school students for careers in design and construction.
Every other week, a team of high school students interested in the AEC industry gather to learn more about what it means to be a design professional, and work on projects together with the help and guidance of practicing architects and engineers.

LERA staff, friends and family were on hand to support NYCFC and the Brooklyn Nets as they took on the Philadelphia Union and the Utah Jazz, respectively.
In their last home game of the 2018 regular season, NYCFC comfortably beat the Union 3-1, while the Nets narrowly lost to the Jazz 101-91.

LERA-ites Stand 1,640-ft Tall at the Lotte World Tower!
|
Completed in 2017, the
Lotte World Tower in Seoul, South Korea is currently the fifth tallest building in the world, and also boasts the world's highest glass-bottomed observation deck at 1,640 ft, on the 118th Floor. LERA was the structural engineer for the tower. Recently, several of LERA's engineers have visited the tower during trips to Korea to experience its dizzying heights firsthand, including bearing witness to holiday celebrations and the tower's annual "sky run"!
