2018 LHBA President, Nick Castjohn Discusses New Leadership and Plans for This Year

"I am honored and humbled to be selected to lead the Louisiana Home Builders Association in this, our 60th year of being the voice of residential construction in Louisiana.  Of course, none of this is a singular effort.  The senior leadership team (Curtis Loftin, 1st Vice President, 2nd Vice President, Dodie Adams, 3rd Vice President, Tommy Pinion, Associate Vice President, Bobby Parks and Immediate Past President, Conrad Blanchard) brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the table and I look forward to working with each of them and supporting their endeavors in future years.  Along with our staff and lobbyist, we have a dynamic team that is prepared to lead the organization and represent our membership for years to come.  In 2018, advocacy will remain our key objective, engaging our representative and public servants to ensure that the regulatory and economic environment remains favorable for those of us who are called to provide housing for the citizens of Louisiana.  Also, we will focus our efforts on doing a bit of housekeeping to better service the firms who belong to our organization, provide public outreach to increase awareness of issues critical to housing in Louisiana, and setting the table for initiatives to be rolled out in the years to come.   All of this keeping in mind our objective of providing safe, affordable housing and enriching the lives of those who call our products home."

LHBA Legislative Update

At this time, no tax bills have passed the House floor.  A vote was taken last night on one revenue raising measure garnering only 38 votes, when 70 votes were needed.  The House convenes today again at 3:00 pm.  Special Session is due to end by March 7.

Checkbook

HB 29 by Rep. Barras passed on the House floor.  HB 29 establishes the Louisiana Checkbook as a centralized, searchable website to provide information, to provide fiscal transparency, and allow the public to obtain fiscal information regarding the state.

Postion:  Support

Status:  Passed the House floor, pending Senate committee referral.

Sales Tax on Immovable Repairs and Remodeling

HB 19 by Rep. Leger has not passed out of Ways and Means.  HB 19 expands state sales and use taxes to services.  The bill as written would include a service sales tax on residential, commercial and industrial.  If this bill were to pass, state and local sales tax on immovable renovations and repairs would be imposed.

Position: Oppose

Status:  Heard in Ways and Means Committee, no vote taken.
