Statement from NAHB Chairman Rick Judson on Introduction of Flood Insurance Legislation

October 29, 2013 - Rick Judson, chairman of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and a home builder and developer from Charlotte, N.C., today issued the following statement on the introduction of the Homeowner Flood Insurance Affordability Act in the House and the Senate:

"NAHB commends Sens. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) and Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.) and Reps. Michael Grimm (R-N.Y.) and Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) for championing identical bipartisan legislation in the Senate and House that will provide relief from soaring flood insurance premium rates for countless home owners across the nation.

"The Homeowner Flood Insurance Affordability Act offers a common-sense solution to fix some of the costly and unintended consequences resulting from the implementation of the Biggert-Waters Flood Insurance Reform Act. The legislation would prevent premium rate hikes from taking effect for four years, which will give FEMA time to conduct an affordability study and to reimburse those who can prove that its existing flood plain maps are inaccurate. The measure also requires FEMA to adopt sound engineering practices to accurately determine flood risk.

"These provisions in the insurance reform bill will prevent undue hardship on the recovering housing market, help current and future policyholders keep their premiums affordable, prevent home values from dropping, and make the National Flood Insurance Program more effective for years to come."

November is Spike Appreciation Month!

Recruiting new members to your local association is an activity recognized and rewarded through the Spike Club. Those who participate are called Spikes, and they are among the most valued members of the association.

Member-to-member recruitment and retention efforts are the largest source of growth for the federation. Spikes bring grassroots growth and stability. These efforts lead to the development of the general membership and our leadership pipeline, keeping the face of the federation true to that of our industry and the scope of interests we represent.

Spikes are the membership leaders of our federation, building the voice, power and influence on every level, in every state.

LHBA Fall Meetings & Fishing Tournament Update:

From October 22 to October 25, the Southeastern Louisiana Home Builders Association hosted the LHBA Quarterly Meetings and a BUILD-PAC Fishing Tournament.  We began with a Welcome Social held at CoCo Marina in Chauvin for all fishermen and guests of the event.  Twenty-two anglers participated in the tournament where $2100 in prize money was up for grabs for three categories:
  • Largest Redfish under 27" - $700.00  Steve Wobbema
  • Redfish with the most spots - $700.00  Randy Noel
  • HBA 5 Redfish Stringer -$700.00
LHBA Champions - St. Tammany HBA including members:
Donny Jenkins, Kenny Adams, Jim Andrews, Brad        Dorsey, Dave Talbot and Ron O'Neal
Prizes for the fishing tournament were given out on October 24 at the Jolly Inn in Houma where members from the Louisiana Home Builders Association received a true taste of Southern Hospitality and the great food that Terrebonne Parish is know for.

Throughout the four days, the main goal of SELHBA was to raise funds for BUILD-PAC.  We are proud to say, over $8300 was raised through entry fees, auctions, 50/50, raffles, and donations.  This could not have been possible without the help of our many sponsors.

Thank you to SELHBA for hosting our very successful Fall Meetings!

Get Your Roof Ready for Winter

For many American families, homeownership brings a sense of stability, accomplishment and peace of mind. Owning a home also means being responsible for its upkeep, in order to make sure it is a safe, comfortable sanctuary for your family to enjoy. As the winter months approach, the first measure of protection for a home against rain and snow in many parts of the country is the roof.

These tips from GAF (www.gaf.com), a New Jersey-based roofing manufacturer, offers advice to home owners for how to get your roof ready for the cold winter.

  1. Start off by checking the roof framing structure to make sure it is not compromised.  Visually scan the roof for any sagging or uneven areas. If you do see an area that looks uneven, this may mean damage to the roof deck below the shingles.
  2. Inspect the gutter systems to make sure they are not clogged with branches, leaves, or other debris. This is important to ensure that rain water and snow have a way off of the roof. If the water or snow is left standing on the roof, there is an increased likelihood of leaking or ice damming.
  3. Make sure that gutters are fastened properly and are tight and secure so that they don't cause overflow and build-up or fall off the fascia board. Leaking water can end up causing damage not just to your roof, but to your interior walls, as well.
  4. Check the valleys of the roof to ensure that they are also free and clear of debris that can add weight to the roof and also act as a barrier to rain and snow. Leaks frequently occur in the valleys so make sure they are well protected by a proper roofing system.
  5. One of the most common causes for roofing leaks is due to problems with flashing. Flashing is the aluminum or metal material that is used in roof to wall transitions over joints to prevent water from seeping in and causing damage. Metal flashing should also be used around roof vents, pipes, skylights, and chimneys. Remember that flashings can be loosened or torn by high winds and heavy rains, so inspect the areas annually.
  6.  Lastly, you should walk around to carefully inspect the shingles on the roof - look for curling edges, missing granules, and certainly for missing shingles or damage from birds, rodents, or squirrels.

By inspecting your roof at least twice a year-before the winter months begin and after they are over-you'll be able to spot and correct any potential problems before they could get severe and cause you to have to replace the entire roof before its expected lifespan.
