A Year Full of Potential!

We are gearing up for the 2017-18 school year, a year full of promise and potential for our students!

All summer, our faculty members have been participating in training to gain or further their certifications in dyslexia education. Our school halls have been busy hosting a successful summer camp and preparing for the new year. The school building has been undergoing some renovations to make room for our new 6th grade class. We've also added more dyslexia specialist rooms, a new art classroom, and even a drama room. Our teachers and staff are busy organizing and decorating these classrooms to welcome everyone back! It's been a lot of fun and a lot of work - and it's all aimed at ensuring we are ready to help our students meet their full potential during this school year!

Here are a few key dates for the start of school:

August 8th - First Day of School for girls

August 9th - First Day of School for boys

August 10th - All Students Report to School

Science tells us that in a child with dyslexia, the part of the brain that is necessary for comprehension works fine, but the child must be able to read print at some level of ease to be able to comprehend that text. Therefore, LKA's core belief is that we must remediate the phonemic deficit in the child so they will learn to read and succeed. We maintain this mission through our Dyslexia Resource Center. Our Dyslexia Specialists are highly trained to tutor our students to make lifelong connections between text and speech.

Past Event: LKA Crawfish Boil

The LKA Family enjoyed a great day at our crawfish boil this past May! About 1,000 pounds of crawifsh were served to 430 guests! Kids enjoyed games and music, and members of the community were treated to student-led tours of the school. In addition to being a lot of fun, the boil raised enough money for LKA to buy our students new art materials for this school year. Thank you to everyone who came out and supported our school! Save the Date!: Dyslexia Awareness Gala

October isn't only about eating candy and carving pumpkins this year! It's also about spreading dyslexia awareness to the community. In honor of Dyslexia Awareness Month, LKA will be hosting a fundraising gala on October 26 at the Crown Plaza. There will be food, drinks, games, and lots of fun! We will also be welcoming two special guests, Drs. Bennett and Sally Shaywitz More details on ticket prices and ways to get involved will be announced soon.We are looking forward to a night of 'Unmasking Dyslexia' with our LKA family!

Letting Their Lights Shine!

Courtlyn Riley is a kind and smart student who shined brightly at the LKA summer camp this year. Her favorite camp activities included playing on the monkey bars and making art projects. She will be in the second grade this year, and is mostly excited about seeing all of her friends on the first day of school.

Ms. Sarah Reling was the camp director at LKA this past summer. She planned each day and worked closely with the other teachers to make sure the students were getting the help they needed while having lots of fun. Ms. Reling is looking forward to teaching our first set of sixth graders and engaging them in small group writing using a proven method called TBWS (Teaching Basic Writing Skills).

Leadership Update

Greetings LKA Family!

I hope all of you enjoyed your summer break. We are so excited to be starting the 2017-18 school year! Get ready to see our expanded building, designed to welcome our first 6th grade class, as well as new students. And get ready to help us choose our school mascot - nominations and selection will happen early this school year. After all, we need to have our mascot in place for our sports camps!

Each of our students has the potential to do great things in life, and we are dedicated to helping each one achieve his or her dreams. Louisiana Key Academy constantly pursues the latest research on dyslexia, trains our staff and educates the community. We are proud of the work we do, and we are proud of the progress we see our students make. We can't wait to see what this year holds!
