Louisiana Key Academy knows each of our students has the potential to do great things when given the right accommodations. Our faculty and staff are dedicated to providing these academic opportunities to our amazing students, but we also recognize that important life lessons extend beyond the classroom as well.
This is what Basic Language Skills teacher, Mr. John Stewart, considered when he formed the Youth Empowerment Academy of LKA. It's a youth club that meets every Wednesday from 4-5:30pm and Saturdays to discuss openly with their peers and learn valuable life skills. Mr. Stewart explained, "The idea was to sit down every week and teach kids important life skills that are sometimes overlooked, such as proper restaurant etiquette and how to make healthy lifestyle choices." He says that the program will also teach professional skills, including public speaking, how to dress for success, and how to complete a career assessment test.
During the first session of the program this past October, involved students had the opportunity to hear a guest military speaker discuss both his life as a soldier, and the importance of setting smart goals for the future. Students then got to create their own smart goals, as well as learn the proper way to tie a tie. Mr. Stewart recalled how much fun the kids had talking with a military member, and hopes to bring in more guest speakers in the future. "You can see the kids' interest growing the more they listen, and I believe that's because they can see themselves growing up to be just as successful." He continued, "Our students already possess this amazing potential for academic success, but we also want them to learn the life skills that will help guide them along the way."
