Rethinking the Academic Mindset
LKA has had a busy start to the school year so far! Teachers have been hard at work implementing new dyslexia education methods that have been proven successful in the classroom.
This past summer some of our teachers had the amazing opportunity to learn innovative dyslexia education techniques from dyslexia experts in Washington. Among these techniques was the full immersion technique, which our teachers have incorporated into the LKA classrooms this year. Full immersion is a teaching technique that is used by many dyslexia educators. It focuses on providing an immersive environment for students that focuses on visual learning with hands-on activities. LKA has incorporated this learning method into what we call "academic labs", which have replaced our science and social studies classes this year. The labs are aligned with the sea of strengths model, which focuses on building students' critical thinking, problem solving, and oral language skills. In these labs our students will be experiencing a full on immersion to provide an understanding of life sciences and historical events. Our students have enjoyed many new lab projects so far, such as growing plants, creating rituals of different tribes, and even building historical homes. We can't wait to see our students' learning thrive in their new academic settings!

To learn to read, the child has to develop the unconscious awareness that spoken words can be pulled apart into the elemental particles of speech (I.e.,phonemes) and that the letters in a written word represent these sounds.

Past Event: Family Arts and Crafts Night
Fun was had by all of the students and families who attended arts and crafts night! On September 22, around 52 people gathered at LKA for a night of food, prizes, and most importantly, crafts! Students got to decorate beautiful masks in honor of the upcoming Dyslexia Awareness Month. These masks will be used as decoration for LKA's gala on October 26, where we will join our community for a night of 'unmasking dyslexia'. Parent Council also provided food, drinks, and door prizes, which were appreciated by all. Don't miss out on the next family gathering at LKA!

Save the Date!: Rewards for Positive Behavior!
Positive Behavior Incentive System, or PBIS, is a reward system that supports positive behavior among students. Every day students at LKA have the opportunity to earn key cash as a reward for good behavior in class. This key cash can be exchanged by the student for different prizes, such as coupons for a free dress day or extra computer time in class. PBIS also sponsors many events throughout the school year that reward students for their good behavior. One such event coming up this month is Character Day. On October 20, students who have earned $200 in key cash will be able to dress up as their favorite book character for the day. Other upcoming PBIS events include a teacher talent show and crazy hair/hat day! Don't forget to stay updated on LKA's calendar for more fun PBIS activity announcements!

Trevor Rogers is our rising 6th grade star this month! He enjoys gaming on his Playstation and all of his classes this year. Trevor's favorite class is art. He loves the art projects and learning about different artists throughout history. He's mostly excited to work on his self-portrait, and to keep learning about art!
Ms. Lesley Guzzardo has been with LKA since its' doors opened. She taught first and second grade before becoming our first ever art studio teacher! Ms. Guzzardo is excited to teach our students about artists and their techniques from different time periods. Her goal is to make every student feel like an artist working in their own studio.

Greetings LKA Family!
October is Dyslexia Awareness Month, and we can't wait to celebrate it with our community! In honor of this month, LKA will be hosting a gala to raise money and awareness for dyslexia education. It will take place at the Crowne Plaza on October 26, from 6:30-10pm. Tickets are $75, and volunteers are more than welcome! The link below will provide more information on volunteer opportunities. We hope to see all of our LKA family there, as well as many new faces!
Our goal, as always, is to provide our students with the best dyslexia education possible. We maintain this mission through many means, some of which include continuous teacher training, fundraising, and alerting the community about the importance of dyslexia education. Our faculty and staff are committed to LKA's mission, and are looking forward to guiding our students toward their educational goals for this school year and beyond.
Happy Learning!
