Our students love the new Starmount Engineering Lab, which was designed with improving dyslexia education in mind!
The lab's purpose is to achieve LKA's goal of building our students' problem solving skills. Mr. Anthony Johnson, the lab teacher, agrees that these skills are critical to both academic and home life. He explained, "We're taking the natural engineering strengths they have and building on them. It's our goal that they will be able to apply these skills when faced with other challenges."
Each grade will be completing several projects throughout this school year. These projects will focus on an engineer-based design process, which will allow students to work hands-on while also expanding their mind to new approaches to problem solving. Our students have already responded to this technique with great enthusiasm. This week they participated in several projects, including building sails, creating a better play doh, and experimenting with the effects of light. The students had a great time creating while also learning about wind, chemical, and optical energy. Mr. Johnson commented, "Every time I see my students focusing on these projects, I feel like I'm looking at the next engineers."
We're looking forward to seeing our young engineers progress this year!
