Volunteer! Get Connected! |
Volunteer! Get Connected,
a service of United Way of Oxford & Lafayette County, is a monthly listing of local volunteer opportunities.
American Red Cross - Northwest Chapter
The American Red Cross provides relief to victims of disasters and helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. The local unit offers a wide variety of volunteer opportunities:
Office Volunteers - assist with general office duties; Shelter Volunteers - work at a shelter during times of disaster; Local Disaster Committee - serve on a local committee that would be mobilized during a disaster. This readiness group has the following teams: Disaster Action Team, Damage Assessment, Communications, Health & Mental Services, Family Services (casework), Staffing, Shelters, and Mass Care (feeding); National Disaster Committee - a program for volunteers who are willing to go on national assignments (normally for 10 day stays); Other - help with fundraising, serve as a county liaison, man a booth at a health fair, or help with other necessary functions. Background checks and training required. If interested, contact David Stone at (662) 236-1282 or David.Stone@redcross.org.
Canterbury Crest
Canterbury Crest provides housing for low to moderate income seniors, 62 & older. All volunteers welcome - various opportunities available.
Contact Donna Bratcher: (662) 234-1012 or canterburycrest@uchinc.org.
Habitat for Humanity
Lafayette County Literacy Council
The Lafayette County Literacy Council (LCLC) has several volunteer opportunities for people who care about literacy and education in our community. The LCLC needs volunteers for its Book Brigade to read aloud to children at the Mary Cathey Head Start Center, nursing homes and other locations and events in the community. We need volunteers to help sort books for our Book Exchange libraries and to pick up books from our Book Drop locations every two weeks and deliver them to our storage unit. In March, we will need volunteers to help at the Oxford Conference for the Book, where we will host all ninth graders in the Oxford and Lafayette School Districts. We'd also love help from those with skills in planning fundraising events, data entry or public relations. Contact the Literacy Council at lafayetteliteracy@gmail.com.
The MANNA Feeding Ministry (St. Peter's Episcopal Church/The Episcopal Church at Ole Miss)
Volunteer opportunity for college students. On Thursdays (during Fall and Spring semesters), volunteers prepare and deliver meals to less-fed residents and other referrals in the Oxford community. College students needed to serve as cooks, cooking assistants, meal assemblers, delivery persons, and clean-up crew. Sign up online at www.ecomoxford.org or contact Rev. Seth Walley at (662) 234-1269 or ecom@olemiss.edu.
North Mississippi Regional Center
Volunteering at North Mississippi Regional Center (NMRC) is a crucial part of the effort to provide quality programs and services to each client. Although the clients have extremely active lifestyles at NMRC and in the community, there is a need for volunteers! As a volunteer, you can play a unique role in NMRC's commitment to provide quality programs and services to individuals with intellectual and related development disabilities. The NMRC volunteer program offers flexible and diverse volunteer opportunities, enabling volunteers to choose their own time commitment. You may participate in many different opportunities and activities depending on your personal interests. Volunteers are also needed for NMRC's active night leisure activities and special events. Please note: All volunteers must agree to go through criminal record and child abuse background checks. For more information, contact B.J. Davis, Director of Public Information/Volunteer Coordinator: (662) 513-7684 or bdavis@nmrc.state.ms.us.
Oxford Lions Club
The Oxford Lions Club, part of Lions Club International, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2017, is made up of men and women whose focus is on helping in the community. Among its many services, the Oxford Lions Club provides assistance to the vision impaired and sponsors the annual Christmas parade in Oxford. Volunteers are needed to help with fundraising, recruitment, and community service projects. To volunteer or request assistance, call Ron Kitchens at (662) 236-3541 or email ccronk88@gmail.com.
United Way of Oxford & Lafayette County
Volunteers are needed to assist with various activities. Contact Kathy Sukanek at (662) 236-4265 or ksuwlou@bellsouth.net .
