Research is for the Birds: LSU Scientist Solves Mystery of Hitchcock's Film

Many people don't realize that the iconic scene from Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds" was partially inspired by a real-life event. In 1961, near the north shore of Monterey Bay, Calif., thousands of birds were found flying erratically, running into things and dying on the streets. After reading about this bizarre incident, Hitchcock called the Santa Cruz Sentinel newspaper to get more information about the strange event before producing the famous film, which was released in 1963. More >>

Phi Kappa Phi and Gamma Sigma Delta Announce "Evening with Great Authors" Event
The LSU chapters of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi and Gamma Sigma Delta are proud to announce that Thomas J. Durant Jr. and Jonathan Roberts will be the guest speakers for the second annual "Evening with Great Authors" to benefit the Baton Rouge Adult Literacy Advocates, a non-profit United Way volunteer organization. For more than 44 years, Adult Literacy Advocates has been serving Baton Rouge offering one-on-one tutoring and small group instruction in adult basic literacy, English as a second language, pre-GED, GED and basic employment skills. The authors will discuss their recently published book, "A History of the Charity Hospitals of Louisiana: A Study of Poverty, Politics, Public Health and the Public Interest." The event will take place on Thursday, Feb. 2, from 7-8:30 p.m. at the LSU Energy, Coast & Environment Building Dalton Woods Auditorium/Rotunda on the corner of Nicholson Drive and Nicholson Drive Extension. A reception and book signing will follow the authors' remarks. Tickets are $30 for general public, $20 for citizens older than 65 and $10 for students, and may be purchased online at www.pkp.lsu.edu or www.adultliteracyadvocates.org, by calling Adult Literacy Advocates at 225-383-1090, or purchased at the door.

 

Purchase George Rodrigue's "A Number One Tiger Fan" Print
George Rodrigue, Louisiana's artist laureate, created a new work, "A Number One Tiger Fan," to raise funds for the LSU Museum of Art, the Tiger Athletic Foundation and the George Rodrigue Foundation for the Arts as part of the "Arts 4 Education" project. Fans can support "Arts 4 Education" by purchasing a silkscreen print of the work signed by Rodrigue for $500 online until Jan. 31, at arts4education.org, by phone at 800-716-8335 and in-person at the LSU Museum of Art Museum Store in the Shaw Center for the Arts.
