PICK OF THE WEEK: HOTHOUSE TOMATOES! We've had some bitterly cold days the past few weeks, and as you can tell when you come out to market, the produce is not as bountiful as it was even a couple weeks ago. But as we work our way through winter and into spring, we're reminded of how grateful we are to have farmers growing crops in green houses! Both of our hothouse tomato vendors are back at market and with some wonderfully vibrant looking tomatoes and peppers for all of us to enjoy. Venture out to market on any day of the week and you'll more than likely find either Tomotts or Cajun Growers out with these impressive hothouse crops. Be sure to come out to market and pick some up for yourself!

Free Library Presentation Focuses on
Parenting Skills in the 21st Century
METAIRIE, LA - Joyce Duncan, the founder of Sunshine Learning Group, will lead a session titled "Parenting in the 21st Century: What's In and What's Out," at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2015 at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 West Napoleon Ave., Metairie.
This event is free-of-charge and is open to the public. Registration is not required.
During the presentation, participants will have a conversation about the components of great parenting, and how they can improve on parenting skills of their parents and grandparents.
"We will discuss some of the current philosophies that relate parenting and child development," says Duncan. "We will explore our parenting styles and share our experiences, and hopefully, we will leave with some tools and solutions about the everyday parenting issues we face."
The presentation will explore the philosophy of The Conscious Parent by Shefali Tsabary, PhD, which focuses on the idea that children function as ushers of the parents' development instead of being merely the receiver of the parents' psychological and spiritual legacy.
According to Dr. Tsabary, parents unwittingly pass on an inheritance of psychological pain and emotional shallowness. In Dr. Tsabary's approach to parenting, children serve as mirrors of their parents' forgotten self and those willing to look in the mirror have an opportunity to establish a relationship with their own inner state of wholeness.

Southern Ladies and Suffragists
Author Miki Pfeffer's New Book Explains Why the 1884 World's
Fair Advanced Women's Issues in the American South
METAIRIE, LA - Miki Pfeffer, author of a new book, Southern Ladies and Suffragists: Julia Ward Howe and Women's Rights at the 1884 New Orleans World's Fair, will discuss her work at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2015 at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 West Napoleon Avenue, Metairie.
The presentation is free-of-charge and is open to the public. Reservations are not required. Books will be available for those who would like to purchase them.
Women from all over the country came to New Orleans in 1884 for the Woman's Department of the Cotton Centennial Exposition, that portion of the World's Fair exhibition devoted to the celebration of women's affairs and industry. Their conversations and interactions played out as a drama of personalities and sectionalism at a transitional moment in the history of the nation. These women planted seeds at the Exposition that would have otherwise taken decades to drift southward.
Southern Ladies and Suffragists chronicles the successes and setbacks of a lively cast of post-bellum women in the first Woman's Department at a world's fair in the Deep South. From a wide range of primary documents, Pfeffer recreates the sounds and sights of 1884 New Orleans after Civil War and Reconstruction. She focuses on how difficult unity was to achieve, even when diverse women professed a common goal. Celebrities such as Julia Ward Howe and Susan B. Anthony brought national debates on women's issues to the South for the first time, and journalists and ordinary women reacted.
At the World's Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition, the Woman's Department became a petri dish where cultures clashed but where women from across the country exchanged views on propriety, jobs, education and suffrage. Pfeffer memorializes women's exhibits of handwork, literary and scientific endeavors, inventions, and professions, but she proposes that the real impact of the six-month long event was a shift in women's self-conceptions of their public and political lives.
For those New Orleans ladies who were ready to seize the opportunity of this uncommon forum, the Woman's Department offered a future that they had barely imagined.
Miki Pfeffer, of Thibodaux, is an independent researcher and native New Orleanian whose work has appeared in the Encyclopedia of World's Fairs and Expositions and in journals such as the Louisiana Historical Journal and La Creole.

Life Coach Carol Fleischman Talks About Purpose and Vision
At East Bank Regional Library Presentation
METAIRIE, LA - Carol Fleischman, a registered life coach, will talk about how patrons can create a vision for their lives, especially those in the second half of their lives, at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 22at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 West Napoleon Avenue, Metairie.
This event is free of charge and is open to the public. Registration is not required.
This event is held in conjunction with the Jefferson Parish Office of Senior Services.
According to Fleischman, life coaching is a synergistic relationship between an accredited life coach and a client designed to tap into your full potential. It is profoundly different from consulting, mentoring, advice, therapy, or counseling. The coaching process addresses specific personal projects, business successes, general conditions and transitions in the client's personal life, relationships or profession by examining what is going on right now, discovering what obstacles or challenges might be, and choosing a course of action to make one's life be what is wanted.
Fleischman specializes in working with individuals and businesses in transition. She designs personal programs for each client. Besides individuals, she serves the business, education, government, and nonprofit sectors on the national, state and local levels. Her areas of expertise include health and wellness, faith-based institutions, collaborative planning, aging, and housing and homelessness.
Fleischman says people are staying healthy and living longer than ever imagined and the old images of growing older no longer hold. The new reality of aging is that everyone must plan and prepare to live long, healthy productive lives.
Fleischman operates Fleischman Associates which was established in 1985. To date, she has worked with more than 300 clients that range across corporate, health care, education, arts, community service, and public sectors.

American History Talk: Historian Christina Vella Talks About The Grandeur and the Gore of Steamboat Racing METAIRIE, LA - Christina Vella, PhD,an adjunt professor of history at Tulane University, will discuss the romance and the deadly practice of steamboat racing at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 22, 2015 at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 West Napoleon Avenue, Metairie. The presentation is free-of-charge and is open to the public. According to Dr. Vella, the age of the steamboat introduced an era of unprecedented speed into the American consciousness. Suddenly, travel time was not dependent on river current or straining horses; instead, all rested on the power of the boiling steam engine, and the bravado of those who would stoke it higher and higher and then close the safety valves to ensure the fastest travel time. As a result, steamboat captains became known as terrible daredevils and raced each other for titles, for example, who would own the route from New Orleans to St. Louis, from Natchez to Louisville. In a time before government inspections and regulations, the public excitement at steamboat races was fraught with danger for the captains, the crews and the passengers of such journeys. One of the most dangerous elements of steamboat racing was poorly maintained boilers. Daredevil captains and inattentive crews that did not release steam from the boilers caused numerous violent explosions that were capable of killing many people. Still, that danger did not keep people from laying bets on the winner, nor from turning out in droves to watch races begin and end, nor even from booking passage aboard a racing vessel. In 1852, government regulations began to be imposed on steamboat boilers, cutting down on the dangers of racing. However, it was not only on racing ventures that steamboat travelers were in peril. Steamboats, mostly constructed of wood, were veritable firetraps; an exploding boiler could quickly lead to a disaster. Steamboats infrequently collided with each other or smaller boats. An easily torn hull would sink a ship. Hulls were also battered by snags underwater. Christina Vella received her doctoral degree in European and U.S. history from Tulane University in New Orleans. A professor of history for more than 20 years, she now devotes most of her time to writing. She frequently serves as a consultant and writer for the U.S. Department of State, Curatorial Division. When Intimate Enemies: The Two Worlds of the Baroness de Pontalba was chosen for the cover of the New York Times Book Review, Vella began receiving lecture invitations which increased as the biography was selected by Publishers Weekly, the New York Times, and Times-Picayune for their "Best Books of 1997" lists. Vella's second book, The Hitler Kiss, is a memoir of the Czechoslovak resistance. Indecent Secrets, Italy's Infamous Murri Murder Affair, is the history of a famous murder trial that took place in Italy in 1905. For more information regarding this presentation, contact Chris Smith, manager of adult programming for the library, at 504-889-8143 or [email protected] _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Gardening Event! LSU AgCenter Leads Two Sessions to Promote School Gardens, And One Session Is on the West Bank METAIRIE, LA - Sarah Bertrand, Horticulture Extension Agent for the LSU AgCenter, will discuss the steps to create a school garden and help teachers develop a school garden plan at two library presentations. The first presentation will occur from 9 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday, Jan. 24at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 West Napoleon, Metairie. The second presentation will occur from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24 at the West Bank Regional Library, 2751 Manhattan, Harvey. Though the two presentations are geared mostly for teachers who want to create gardens in their schools, they are free of charge and are open to the public. Registration is not required. Each participant will leave the workshop with a beginning draft of a garden proposal - including ideas for garden placement, design, curriculum integration, maintenance, and funding. During the presentation, Bertrand will discuss the following issues. - 1. Who will be responsible for the garden? "The "garden leader" or "garden manager" may be a school principal, an experienced teacher or an experienced gardener from the community," says Bertrand. "She or he should be backed by a small team who between them have commitment, interest, experience, authority and contacts: for example, the head teacher, some parents or community members, a few students, a school inspector, a health worker, the school caretaker."
- 2. What will we need? "For tools and equipment, seeds and seedlings, the cost need not be high. If you start small they can be acquired over a few years. Often equipment can be borrowed, and sometimes you can save your own seeds."
- 3. How big will the garden be? "Your garden could be anything from a window box to a field. The size will depend on the space available and the types of plants that students want to grow. No matter the size, students will have fun learning."
- 4. How will we decide what to grow? "In general, choose crops and trees that are adapted to local conditions, easy to cultivate and fit into the school term. Your crops should fit in with local food habits, be easy to prepare and have high nutritional value (for example green leafy vegetables and orange and yellow fruits and vegetables)."
- 5. Who will do the work? "Much of the work will be done by the children. They should be helped by volunteers (parents, community members, students). But the bottom line is that children are learners and not a labor force. They must enjoy their time in the garden and learn from it. The garden should also give children opportunities to take responsibility, make decisions, plan, organize work, collaborate, evaluate and publicize."
- 6. How much time will it take? "Ideally, lesson time and garden time should be matched one to one. Lessons are for discussing and explaining, planning and organizing work, setting up experiments and observations, and documenting garden activities and events. To maintain a small garden and get full educational benefit, a class needs about an hour of garden time and an hour of lesson time per week, with a little "garden homework" in pupils' own time."
- 7. What training do we need? "This depends on what knowledge and experience you already have. If possible, arrange for the head teacher and two or three others to have a training course in basic garden management, nutrition, organic gardening methods and project - based learning across the curriculum. Even if you are new to gardening, this workshop will put you in touch with the LSU AgCenter's Horticulturist for Jefferson Parish, a great resource for information."
The Louisiana State University Agricultural Center is one of 10 institutions within the Louisiana State University System. The LSU AgCenter's mission is to provide the people of Louisiana with research-based educational information that will improve their lives and economic well-being. The LSU AgCenter includes the Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station, which conducts agricultural-based research, and the Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service, which extends the knowledge derived from research to the people of the state. The LSU AgCenter plays an integral role in supporting agricultural industries, enhancing the environment, and improving the quality of life through its 4-H youth, family and consumer sciences, and community development programs. * Fennel!
Produce Profile
Fennel is in the celery family, and it is highly aromatic. With a similar flavor to anise, the bulb and greens are all great to use. The bulbs can be sauteed, stewed, grilled, or put raw into a salad, while the greens are a great garnish, in salads, or as an herb in many savory dishes or soups.

Channeling Carnival controversy
On Jan. 21 at 6 p.m., artist Andrea Fraser will reprise her performance "Not just a few of us" at Tulane University's Dixon Hall, 6823 St. Charles Ave. The performance is free.
Fraser was a star of the Prospect.3 opening-day activities, when she presented a much-admired one-woman theatrical re-enactment of a 1991 New Orleans City Council meeting when councilwoman Dorothy Mae Taylor did her best to expose and correct the lack of diversity in some of New Orleans' oldest Mardi Gras parading organizations. Read James Gill's 2012 column "Mardi Gras is more open, thanks to Dorothy Mae Taylor."

The Will Rogers Follies Kicks Off 2015 at
Rivertown Theaters for the Performing Arts
Rivertown Theaters for the Performing Arts will bring back one of audiences' favorite musicals "The Will Rogers Follies" January 18 - 31, 2015.
The Winner of 9 Tony Awards, including the Best Musical, The Will Rogers Follies focuses on the life and career of famed humorist and performer Will Rogers, using as a backdrop the Ziegfeld Follies, which he often headlined. This musical describes every episode in his life in the form of a big, splashy production number. Through rope tricks, showgirls and tap dancing cowboys, the revue contains snippets of Rogers' famous homespun style of wisdom and common sense, and tries to convey the personality of this quintessentially American figure whose most famous quote was, "I never met a man I didn't like."
Anyone who has ever seen or performed in Will Rogers Follies will agree that there has never been a man-or-woman who did not like it. There's no doubt that audience members will be influenced by Will Rogers' infectious outlook of respect and confidence in the goodness of his fellowman. "It's Will-a-mania Time!"

Ain't Got No Home
Ain't Got No Home, which strings together 18 of the most loved New Orleans R&B songs of the 60's, is a new adventure for the characters from the smash hit jukebox musical, Blueberry Hill.
It takes place in New Orleans, specifically at the Blueberry Hill Bar & Grill, two months after Hurricane Katrina.
The characters, Cosimo, Josie, Donald, Allee, and April, are all back and dealing with the aftermath of the hurricane. But, it seems the biggest problem isn't called Katrina, it's a new character who has come into their lives and is hellbent on causing more trouble than any hurricane could deliver. And, with it, there are loads of laughs and the songs of New Orleans' greatest singers, including Aaron Neville, Irma Thomas, Ernie K-Doe, Fats Domino, and more.
Written and directed by Butch Caire.
Featuring Troi Bechet (Josie), Butch Caire (Cosimo), Adella Gautier (Josephine), Donald Lewis Jr. (Donald), April Louise (April), and Allee Peck (Allee).

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged)
Three actors. Thirty-seven plays. Ninety minutes. The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) was London's longest-running comedy - 10 years in the West End at the Criterion Theatre! Join three madcap med in tights as they bring to modern audiences all of Shakespeare's Comedies, Histories and Tragedies by way of the Marx Brothers, the Three Stooges, and Monty Python. This fourth wall-breaking, sidesplitting comedy is an irreverent romp through the works of the greatest playwright of all time, with none of the intimidation of studying his work in English Class. A revised and up-to-date version of the original 1987 hit, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) has become a favorite of American and European audiences alike. Performances: January 23-25
All performances are held in Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve Wetlands Acadian Cultural Center Theatre located at 314 St. Mary Street in Thibodaux. Call (985) 446-1896 for reservations.

The French Quarter Felines and the Who Dat Cats are taking the field at the end of the month for the second annual New Orleans Kitten Bowl.
Organizers announced the return of the event earlier this week, which kicks off at 11 a.m. on Jan. 31 at the Big Easy Sportsplex near the Elmwood Shopping Center.
According to the event, the Jefferson SPCA has partnered with other local businesses for the event that aims to promote the adoption of shelter animals.
"[The] New Orleans Kitten Bowl is the perfect event to show off our adoptable felines in a fun environment," program direction Jacob Stroman said.
Organizers said the event is part of a national competition done in part through the North Shore Animal League America and the Hallmark Channel's 2015 National Kitten Bowl.
During the event, attendees can participate in kid-friendly games, a raffle, some half-time entertainment and inquire about adoptions. The Jefferson SPCA said that the organization with the most adoptions will be granted a cash prize to help support animal adoption efforts.
More information on the event can be obtained through the Jefferson SPCA website.

NOLA Navy Week 2015
NOLA Navy Week 2015 will be smaller, with six vessels that will be moored along the Mississippi River's east bank and opened for public tours. More than 2,700 sailors, Marines and Coast Guard personnel are expected to visit the city during the week. The ships are scheduled to arrive April 23 and depart April 29.
The USS Cole, the guided-missile destroyer that was attacked by suicide bombers in Yemen in 2000, killing 17 U.S. sailors and injuring 39 others, is among the five active warships from three nations currently scheduled to visit the port.
The flagship for the visit is the USS Wasp, the flattop amphibious assault ship that also was part of NOLA Navy Week 2012. It embarked to New Orleans with a contingent of Marines and their fighting equipment.
The Coast Guard barque Eagle, also a highlight of the 2012 NOLA Navy Week, is scheduled to return in April. However, it will be the only tall ship this time.
In addition to the Eagle, Cole and Wasp, the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS James E. Williams, Canadian destroyer HMCS Athabaskan, and Great Britain's HMS Landcaster, known as "The Queen's Frigate," are tentatively scheduled to visit the port. France is considering sending a warship as well.
The ships will be berthed along the Mississippi River, with the Eagle moored at Bienville Street in Woldenberg Park

New Orleans, Louisiana - Two hundred years ago on a battlefield just outside of New Orleans, a frontier general and his motley force of regulars troops and volunteers defeated a larger, more experienced British army intent on capturing the port city. The Historic New Orleans Collection's new exhibition, presented in conjunction with the bicentennial of the Battle of New Orleans, sheds light on Andrew Jackson, the leader of that improbable American victory. "Andrew Jackson: Hero of New Orleans" will be available to the public at 533 Royal St., Tuesday-Saturday, 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and
Sunday, 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., through March 29, 2015.
"Jackson was the 19th-century equivalent of a rock star," said Jason Wiese, exhibition curator and associate director of THNOC's Williams Research Center. "He was one of the United States' most famous heroes, as well as one of its most polarizing figures."
Before he became the seventh president of the United States, Jackson was a relatively unknown Tennessee militia general. His success in battles with Creek Indians introduced him to a national audience, but it was his triumph at the Battle of New Orleans in 1815 that launched him to stardom.
