MAYOR LANDRIEU TOUTS 2014 SUCCESS IN TOURISM, SPECIAL EVENTS, FILM

NEW ORLEANS, LA- Today, Mayor Mitch Landrieu noted the tremendous success of the cultural economy and tourism sectors in 2014 as the city hosted record-breaking, world-class events, received global tourism accolades, attracted major film projects, and continued improvements to the permitting process for special event organizers.

In the first half of 2014, the New Orleans' tourism industry boasted nearly 5.1 million visitors with an estimated $3.86 billion in visitor spending. Visitation in 2014 was 2% more than the same period in 2013, according to data from the University of New Orleans (UNO) Hospitality Research Center. Tourism officials expect numbers for the second half of 2014 to be strong.

"Year after year, New Orleans proves to be one of the best places in the world to live, to visit and to conduct business. One of the reasons our economy continues to grow is due to our continued focus on creating opportunities for our cultural economy to thrive. We are thrilled that our artisans, musicians, culinary and creative professionals are being recognized across the globe," Mayor Landrieu said noting the city's hosting of over 400 festivals, events, parades and markets this year.

At the start of 2014, New Orleans hosted the 2014 NBA All Star Weekend bringing more than $106 million in economic impact and international publicity to the city, according to a study by the UNO Hospitality Research Center. That same study found that visitors spent an average of $904 during their mid-February trip to New Orleans resulting in $3.2 million in tax revenue for the New Orleans region. Similarly, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) officials reported that WrestleMania XXX generated a record-breaking $142.2 million in economic impact for the city. This past April, a crowd of 75,167 fans from all 50 states and 36 countries attended WWE's pop-culture extravaganza, making it the highest-grossing entertainment event at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

Stephen Perry, President and CEO of the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) said, "2014 was a very strong year for New Orleans' tourism industry. The NBA All-Star Game, WWE WrestleMania XXX, a packed festival season and consistent convention business are only a few highlights of the year. New Orleans continues to win global travel and tourism accolades, and we look forward to a successful 2015 for the city's largest and most important economic driver - the tourism industry."

"2014 marked the culmination of an unprecedented run of world-class major sporting events in New Orleans and the State of Louisiana. The legacy of these events, including WWE's WrestleMania XXX and the NBA All Star Weekend, is deeply rooted in the Mayor's office, as his administration played a major role in reinventing how the City engages and hosts these major economic drivers. From one stop permitting, to special event communications, to playing an unprecedented active role in the Host Committees, our city has never been a more friendly place for major events to do business." said Jay Cicero, President/CEO of the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation.

Major film projects and local workforce development

Louisiana is the number one producer of feature films in the country and New Orleans is the flagship location. 2014 year-end projections show an estimated $509 million in direct spending for 60 tax credit projects in New Orleans-an increase of over $100 million from last year. There were also 193 non-tax credit projects that contributed in over $9 million in spending. Non-tax credit projects are also up by over $3 million from last year.

The city saw its largest film productions of the year over the summer of 2014, as Jurassic World and Terminator: Genisys filmed at locations across New Orleans. Together, the productions spent an estimated $168 million locally.

Other notable film projects produced in the city that premiered in theaters and on television in 2014 included NCIS: New Orleans, True Detective, American Horror Story: Freak Show, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and 22 Jump Street.

As part of the Mayor's Office of Cultural Economy, Film New Orleans partnered with local organizations to produce low- cost or no- cost film industry workforce training programs for individuals interested in working in New Orleans burgeoning film industry. With the number of productions in the New Orleans region steadily climbing, the City continued work to meet the increased demand for locals to fill jobs in the industry. In 2014, the City partnered with local film industry businesses, New Orleans Video Access Center, Jefferson Parish, Ashe Cultural Center and the UNO Foundation, to produce 4 workforce training programs which trained a total of 125 individuals from the New Orleans region for jobs in the film industry.

The State of Louisiana, through the Motion Picture Tax Credit program, incentivizes productions to hire locals for their productions so the City assesses the needs of the industry and produces training programs to help fill the gaps in industry employment.

"We're proud of the work we have done to ensure the success and sustainability of our city's cultural economy. Through strong workforce development and job trainings, we are proving to production companies and special event organizers from across the world that New Orleans is a place that can meet all their needs," said Scott Hutcheson, Advisor to the Mayor for Cultural Economy.

In addition to film industry trainings, the Office of Cultural Economy developed 11 other educational and workforce development programs in 2014 in the areas of digital arts & crafts, culinary arts, design, entertainment, literary arts & humanities, historic preservation and traditional culture bearers. Programming ranged from experiential workshops and job trainings to industry panel presentations.

New Orleans was also chosen by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts as the 16th site for Ensuring the Arts for Any Given Child, a program that creates a long-range arts education plan for students in grades K-8. The Kennedy Center will fund the program with the assistance of local organizations like the Mayor's Office of Cultural Economy.

High Marks on Tourism

As our city continues to be a model for the nation, we see visitation and important visitation spending increase," said Mark Romig, President and CEO of New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corporation (NOTMC). "Tourism and economic development go hand in hand and we continue to grow a stronger economy for all citizens and demonstrate that we are national leaders in resiliency and revitalization."

Special event permitting process easier than ever before

Through the One Stop Shop, which acts as a single point of entry to City departments that issue event permits and licenses, the City provides special event organizers with seamless customer service that minimizes wait times and visits to City Hall for permits related to events. In 2014, the One Stop Shop collected over $750,000 in revenue and processed over 2,360 applications in coordination with 17 City agencies reviewing and approving documents to ensure both citizen interests and departmental missions were properly met. This year, the One Stop Shop also incorporated all district Council offices into reviews of alcohol related events to provide a seamless experience.

"Since starting the One Stop Shop in 2013, the City has received overwhelmingly positive reviews of the improved application process for special events," said Ava Rogers, Deputy Chief Administrative Officer. "We remain committed to providing people who wish to host events in New Orleans with the best service possible."

Looking forward to 2015

In 2015, New Orleans will host the 2015 Sugar Bowl in January and the USA Volleyball Girls Junior National. Annual events including Mardi Gras, the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, ESSENCE Festival and French Quarter Festival are anticipating record number of attendees in the coming year.

Recipe of the Week

If greens bring in luck and fortune for the new year, then greens we must eat! Try this Southern Cooked Greens for a perfectly New Orleans way to cook them, right down to the can of Dixie this recipe calls for!

Southern Cooked Greens

How do you cook your greens? This has been the subject of great debate at market lately now that collards and turnip greens are in season. Looking for a new technique? Try this recipe for Southern Cooked Greens. The bottle of Dixie beer it calls for makes it unmistakeably New Orleans cookin'.

turnip greensIngredients

1/2 pound bacon

3 cups chopped onions

salt and pepper

dash of Louisiana hot sauce

2 tablespoons minced fresh shallots

1 tablespoon minced fresh garlic

1 12-ounce bottle Dixie Beer

1/4 cup rice wine vinegar

1 tablespoon molasses

1 tablespoon soy sauce

6 pounds greens (collard, mustard, turnip, kale, spinach, or bolted lettuce), cleaned and stemmed

Directions

Fry bacon until it is crispy. Cut up bacon and place in a large pot along with some of the drippings. Add onions to pot and cook for about 6 to 7 minutes or until the onions are wilted. Season with salt, pepper, and hot sauce. Add shallots and garlic and cook for 2 minutes. Stir in beer, vinegar, molasses, and soy sauce. Add greens, about a third at a time, pressing the greens down as they start to wilt. Cook greens uncovered over low heat for about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

To serve, mound greens in the center of a serving platter. Spoon cooking liquid over the top and serve.

Note: These are great served with meat (such as pork chops) arranged around the greens.

Holiday Home and Courtyard Tours

Just in time for the holiday season, The Historic New Orleans collection is pleased to once again offer the Holiday Home Tour of the Williams Residence.

The two-story brick townhouse, built in 1889 and restored in the 1940s, was owned by THNOC's founders General L. Kemper and Leila Williams. Filled with antiques and other objects d'art collected by the couple in their wide travels, the house was occupied by Williamses from 1946 through 1963.

From December 5 through January 4, visitors to the residence will explore how the Williamses celebrated Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Eve, including parties on their farm in Patterson, Louisiana and Sugar Bowl celebrations on New Year's Day.  In keeping with the Williams' tradition of fresh greenery, the residence will feature a beautifully decorated tree with vintage ornaments and large boughs of fresh foliage, as well as photos of their holiday parties.

In addition, tour guides will relate stories of New Orleans holiday traditions and some of their personal favorites.

Reveillon Dinners

Reveillon (REH-vee-on). A Creole tradition from the mid-1800s, dozens of New Orleans' finest restaurants serve up decadent four-course holiday feasts with all the trimmings. Nightly from December 30-31. - See more at: https://holiday.neworleansonline.com/reveillon/#sthash.q9hcP2QC.dpuf

Tom Fitzmorris' Top 10

nomenu.com

1. Pelican Club

The menu changes every year, with Chef Richard Hughes adding new dishes at the last minute and beyond. Here are the widest choices in each course. A choice of two soups, both perfect for the weather. The signature baked oysters and seafood martini. Turkey tamales with pumpkin and masa stuffing. Lobster, lamb chops, fish with crabmeat, a trio of duck. Four desserts: White and dark chocolate bread pudding and the navel orange creme brulee are among the innovations.

The prices range from $46 to $54.

2. Commander's Palace

Commander's participated in the Reveillon for years, but only since last year has it done so wholeheartedly. Chef Tory McPhail's $100 Reveillon this year brings six courses to the feasting table, all of them grabbers.

Start with Louisiana caviar (this is the season for that), then a grilled oyster stew, a tartine of ox heart (I believe that is a first), flounder Lyonnaise and quail stuffed with black truffles, pecans and cherries. The dessert is buche de Noel with bananas and dulce de leche.

3. Brennan's

It's too soon to judge the goodness of the recently reopened Brennan's, but its sheer newsworthiness makes this an alluring Reveillon venue. Chef Slade Rushing, formerly of five-star MiLa, lays down a no-choices, six-course holiday dinner whose highlights are a sweet potato blini with buttermilk crme frache and caviar, butter-poached lobster in a winter root veggie veloute, porcini-dusted grouper with salsify (a.k.a. "oyster plant"), Creole-spiced lamb chops with a cranberry-port reduction and a very British Yule sticky toffee pudding with Devonshire cream.

The expensively restored premises add to the lovely picture.

4. Criollo

Many hotel restaurants that staged Reveillon menus in the past dropped out this year. A notable exception is the brilliant new dining room of the Monteleone Hotel. It always had one of the best holiday menus in its now-extinct Hunt Room.

But in the much more handsome, new Criollo, the great old traditional food is presented more richly. The $75 meal includes the signature heirloom beet salad, a Muscovy duck breast with caramelized citrus, a flounder with shrimp and crabmeat, and one of only two buches de Noel (Yule log, the grandest of Christmas dessert) being served by anyone this year.

5. Nola

While all three of Emeril's restaurants are participating in the Reveillon this year for the first time, the menu I find most interesting is this one from NOLA, the star chef's most casual restaurant. With three choices in four courses, this is one of the most varied menus out there.

Oyster stew with absinthe, veal sweetbreads, house-cured salmon, and daube glace are the starters of note. Then herb-crusted rack of lamb, quail breast with collards and fish courtbouillon, and the first pecan pie bread pudding I ever heard of. It's $60 for the whole meal.

6. Muriel's.

Chef Erik Veney ran the kitchen at the now-gone Stella for a few years, but he is now back at Muriel's where he created much of the menu before Hurricane Katrina. His Reveillon is just the thing I look for: oyster pan roast, butternut squash and shrimp bisque, venison, salmon, sea scallops and a Creole Christmas trifle.

It's a serious bargain at $48 for the four courses.

7. Rue 127

This is the first Reveillon for Rue 127 and owner/Chef Ray Gruezke, who clearly understands the concept. His menu is one of the most varied among the Reveillon, with more game and chops than typical, and a rabbit pot pie and an andouille-cornbread-stuffed quail. All of it feels to be in harmony with the late autumn weather.

The place is small, so a reservation is essential.

8. Tujague's

Old restaurants and the holidays seem to have been made for one another. Tujague's was a little too old for a lot of people, but last year it rolled out a much more extensive and more interesting new menu for Reveillon. A sampling of the four courses brings us a crispy pork belly with oyster and andouille cream sauce, an apple and blue cheese salad, quail with oyster dressing and seafood court bouillon, among other things.

The price is $45 for one of the best Reveillon bargains.

9. Upperline

After a choice of soups or a glass of Madeira, the etouffee of duck and andouille, shrimp remoulade on fried green tomatoes, and the sweetbreads and mushroom ragout are the most appealing second courses. Entrees include roast duck with sweet potatoes and pecans, and a rack of lamb. The vanilla custard glazed with a hot poker reaches back to Thomas Jefferson's time.

The dinner is $45, with a wine package available.

10. Martinique

Last year, Martinique went French with its Reveillon menu. It made a lot of sense and was a big hit. Here it is again, rebuilt throughout. The first courses include the local caviar and foie gras. Two hearty soups form the next course, then a couple of salads with seasoned vegetables and fruits. Entrees include a pork tenderloin, pan-roasted flounder and a baked oyster pie.

A $65 price for the five courses is better than fair.

"The Boudin Ball" featuring Ed Volker's Los Reyes de Legarto, Chickie Wah Wah, 8 p.m.

Since the Radiators retired from full-time touring and recording, former keyboardist and primary songwriter Ed Volker has worked alone and with various collaborators. His Los Reyes de Legarto ensemble includes members of the Iguanas augmented by percussionist Michael Skinkus and former Papa Grows Funk saxophonist Jason Mingledorff. They play New Orleans rhythm & blues classics from the 1950s, as well as Radiators songs recast with horns. In what is only Los Reyes de Legarto's second gig, they'll headline the inaugural "Boudin Ball" at Chickie Wah Wah. The show opens at 8 p.m. with cellist and singer Leyla McCalla, the former Carolina Chocolate Drop who now resides in New Orleans, followed by blues-based Lafayette singer-songwriter Dege Legg. In keeping with its name, the "Boudin Ball" also includes Cajun food.

"Big Night New Orleans New Year's Eve Gala," featuring Cowboy Mouth, Royal Teeth and more, Hyatt Regency, 9 p.m.

Possibly the largest indoor bash in New Orleans on New Year's Eve, the "Big Night New Orleans" event features multiple bands and DJs in various ballrooms inside the Hyatt Regency downtown. Those bands include the irrepressible Cowboy Mouth, south Louisiana pop band Royal Teeth, trombonist/singer Glen David Andrews, trumpeter Shamarr Allen, the Brass-a-Holics, and Chubby Carrier & the Bayou Swamp Band; DJs include Kid Kamillion, Candy D and Mike Swift. The 610 Stompers and the Bad Girls of Burlesque will also be on hand. Tickets are $120 for general admission, $210 for VIP, plus fees. The ticket price includes open bar from 9 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., plus buffet.

Quintron and Miss Pussycat, Freret Street PubliQ House, 8:30 p.m.

The sonic mad scientist Quintron and his puppeteer partner Miss Pussycat generally stage elaborate shows, with props and costumes, around major holidays. At the Freret Street PubliQ House, they're joined by Babes and Heavy Lids.

Eric Lindell, Circle Bar, 10 p.m.

The roots rock, soul and blues guitarist and singer returns to a venue he frequented early in his career.

Walter "Wolfman" Washington & the Roadmasters, d.b.a., 10 p.m.

The venerable soul, funk and blues guitarist and singer, the quintessential New Orleans nightclub musician, and his band host the party at the popular Frenchmen Street bar.

Galactic, Tipitina's, 10 p.m.

The nouveau funk band's annual New Year's Eve gig at Tipitina's, like its Mardi Gras gigs at the venue, is a well-established tradition. The California Honeydrops and DJ Quickie Mart also are on the bill. Tickets are $75.

The New Mastersounds and Dumpstaphunk, Joy Theater, 10 p.m.

The groove band The New Mastersounds was formed in England, but its members took their cues from the catalog of the Meters. They'll share a bill with the very much born-and-bred-in-New Orleans Dumpstaphunk, led by keyboardist/singer Ivan Neville. The show also includes a solo set by keyboardist Jon Cleary. Ticket prices range from $60 to $125.

Krewe de Jeanne d'Arc Holds Its Annual Parade on January 6,

The 603rd Birthday of Saint Joan

NEW ORLEANS - The seventh annual French Quarter walking parade in honor of the birth of Joan of Arc will occur at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 6 in the French Quarter of New Orleans.

The parade, sponsored by the Krewe de Jeanne d'Arc, marks the 603rd year since the birth of the French patriot and Catholic saint in 1412 in Domremy, France. The date also occurs on Twelfth Night, the end of Christmas and the official start of Mardi Gras season.

The 2015 parade features nine women playing different aspects of Joan of Arc, including the 2015 Maid of Honor Emma Martello of McGehee School, symbolizing Joan's youth and promise. Each year the Krewe de Jeanne d'Arc selects the Maid through a local student competition.

This year's King Charles VII is Patrick Van Hoorebeek, owner of Patrick's Bar Vin, and the 2015 Queen Yolande is Simone Bruni Crouere, owner of Demo Diva. The king and queen are selected based on community leadership contributions.

The medieval-themed procession of approximately 200 walking members and volunteers begins at the corner of Toulouse and Decatur Street near the shops at Jax Brewery and travels upriver on Decatur before it turns onto Conti Street for one block.

It then turns right onto Chartres Street; marchers travel seven blocks, turn right onto Ursulines for one block, rejoin Decatur to walk past the golden Joan of Arc statue at St. Phillip Street, to end at Washington Artillery Park, across from Jackson Square (riverside) for a birthday party and king cake ceremony.

Visit www.joanofarcparade.org for  route map, and other parade details.

Many krewe members share their own handmade or hand-embellished throws, but a few of the signature throws parade goers can seek are: hand-painted wooden swords given out by 2015 Maid of Honor Emma Martello, sword pendants, collectible playing cards representing different characters in the parade, krewe-made collectible Saint Joan medallions, handmade Joan dolls, and battery tea light candles. Those who receive a candle are invited to process with their candles to Washington Artillery Park and place their candles on Joan's giant birthday cake.

Members of the public are invited to dress in gold and follow behind the Golden Joan to the end of the parade. The parade makes three pauses at the following locations.

  • The Historic New Orleans Collections' (HNOC) Williams Research Center, near the corner of Conti and Chartres. Representatives from HNOC announce the honorary characters in English and French from its balcony and the parade pauses to toast its royalty. This year's special guest for the toast is Grgor Trumel, Consul General of France in New Orleans.
  • St. Louis Cathedral, Jackson Square. The Very Reverend Philip G. Landry of the Saint Louis Cathedral blesses Joan's sword in a re-enactment of the moment when Joan called for a crusader's sword found buried behind the altar in the Church of Saint Catherine de Fierbois.
  • Washington Artillery Park, between the river and Jackson Square. The student portraying the young Joan of Arc crowns the honorary King Charles VII, after which participants partake of the first king cake of the 2015 Carnival season. Members of the public are encouraged to bring their own king cake to share.

"The Joan of Arc Parade is an homage to everything we love about New Orleans: our youthful boldness, our confidence despite all odds, our unique heroism, our French lineage, our Catholicism, our irreverence for tradition and authority yet admiration for both, and our sense of humor matched by our strong sense of hope," says Amy Kirk, krewe captain. "I cannot imagine Twelfth Night without the Krewe de Jeanne d'Arc's grace and gaiety! I am humbled by our evolution, thanks to the tireless work of krewe members year round. We are a hardworking sincere group graced by Joan."

For more information regarding this event, contact Amy Kirk, krewe captain, at 504-251-5046 or [email protected].

Known as "The Maid of Orleans" for her role in lifting the siege of Orlans, France, Joan of Arc is the patron saint of France, and is beloved as an unofficial patron saint by the people of New Orleans. The Krewe de Jeanne d'Arc holds the annual parade in celebration of St. Joan's birthday, Twelfth Night,  and New Orleans' French heritage. Her golden statue in the French Market, a copy of one in Paris, was a gift to the city of New Orleans from the people of France. The krewe was founded in 2008 by Amy Kirk Duvoisin. http://joanofarcparade.org/

TUESDAY January 6, 6 p.m.We'll kick off the parade at 6 p.m. from the corner of Toulouse and Decatur and end with the king cake at Washington Artillery Park. The parade typically starts on time at 6 sharp and makes 3 pauses for a bit of medieval pageantry:
  • The Historic New Orleans Collection announces our honorary characters in English and French from its balcony as the parade pauses to toast our royalty near the corner of Conti and Chartres.
  • Father Landry of the Saint Louis Cathedral blesses Joan's sword in a re-enactment of the moment when Joan called for a crusader's sword found buried behind the altar in a French church. Arrive early to get a good viewing spot and a candle.
  • The public is welcome to join us at the end of the parade (7-7:30ish) at Washington Artillery Park for a brief ceremony in which our honorary student leader portraying the young Joan of Arc crowns our honorary King Charles VII, after which we all partake of our first king cake of the 2015 Carnival season. The krewe will have some king cake to share but parade goers are encouraged to bring their own king cake to share and perhaps some picnic wine or pick up a hot drink from one of the coffee shops next to Washington Artillery Park.

Volunteers NeededOur Supporting Cast Members parade for freeWe still need a LOT more people to help us with some essential parade roles, carrying banners and serving as security or chaperones at the parade edges. Because these people need to stick to their assigned post and don't have hands free for giving throws, we invite these individuals to walk with us for free. We also have some simple costumes to provide.  Supporting cast members can attend all our events. Volunteers can sign up on our website as supporting cast members. Help us spread the word!

NOLA Navy Week 2015

NOLA Navy Week 2015 will be smaller, with six vessels that will be moored along the Mississippi River's east bank and opened for public tours. More than 2,700 sailors, Marines and Coast Guard personnel are expected to visit the city during the week. The ships are scheduled to arrive April 23 and depart April 29.

The USS Cole, the guided-missile destroyer that was attacked by suicide bombers in Yemen in 2000, killing 17 U.S. sailors and injuring 39 others, is among the five active warships from three nations currently scheduled to visit the port.

The flagship for the visit is the USS Wasp, the flattop amphibious assault ship that also was part of NOLA Navy Week 2012. It embarked to New Orleans with a contingent of Marines and their fighting equipment.

The Coast Guard barque Eagle, also a highlight of the 2012 NOLA Navy Week, is scheduled to return in April. However, it will be the only tall ship this time.

In addition to the Eagle, Cole and Wasp, the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS James E. Williams, Canadian destroyer HMCS Athabaskan, and Great Britain's HMS Landcaster, known as "The Queen's Frigate," are tentatively scheduled to visit the port. France is considering sending a warship as well.

The ships will be berthed along the Mississippi River, with the Eagle moored at Bienville Street in Woldenberg Park

Exhibition to highlight Andrew Jackson's role at the Battle of New Orleans

Display and additional programming commemorates the 200th anniversary of the battle

New Orleans, Louisiana - Two hundred years ago on a battlefield just outside of New Orleans, a frontier general and his motley force of regulars troops and volunteers defeated a larger, more experienced British army intent on capturing the port city. The Historic New Orleans Collection's new exhibition, presented in conjunction with the bicentennial of the Battle of New Orleans, sheds light on Andrew Jackson, the leader of that improbable American victory.  "Andrew Jackson: Hero of New Orleans" will be available to the public at 533 Royal St., Tuesday-Saturday, 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and

 Sunday, 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., through March 29, 2015.

"Jackson was the 19th-century equivalent of a rock star," said Jason Wiese, exhibition curator and associate director of THNOC's Williams Research Center. "He was one of the United States' most famous heroes, as well as one of its most polarizing figures."

Before he became the seventh president of the United States, Jackson was a relatively unknown Tennessee militia general. His success in battles with Creek Indians introduced him to a national audience, but it was his triumph at the Battle of New Orleans in 1815 that launched him to stardom.
