NEW ORLEANS, LA - Mayor Mitch Landrieu announced that 62 organizations across the city received 2014-2015 competitive grants from the Edward Wisner Donation.

"We're pleased today to announce our Wisner Donation grant recipients, chosen based on established criteria and a thorough assessment of all applicants," said Mayor Landrieu. "These grants are distributed to deserving organizations that are contributing to our community in meaningful ways."

The Wisner Donation was created from the estate of Edward Wisner to the City of New Orleans as a 100-year charitable trust in 1914. The Donation must support local needs in the areas of beautification, education, recreation or human services.

The City sought proposals that best responded to the requirements of the Wisner Donation and to additional criteria, including alignment with citywide priorities, demonstration of an innovative and performance-driven approach, maximum public access and benefit, diversity and inclusiveness, and ability to leverage other investments.

Applications were reviewed by a group of senior City officials including: Jeff Hebert, director of the New Orleans Redevelopment Authority and chief resilience officer; Scott Hutcheson, advisor to the Mayor for cultural economy; Alex Lebow, director of strategic partnerships; Charlotte Parent, director of the New Orleans Health Department; Vic Richard, executive director of the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission; Brooke Smith, chief of staff; Tyronne Walker, former director of CeaseFire New Orleans; and Charles West, director of the Innovation Delivery Team.

"We will continue to ensure that we use these funds to strengthen the heart of our community and address our city's greatest needs," said Mayor Landrieu.

CITY ANNOUNCES PREPARATION IN ADVANCE OF 2015 MARDI GRAS

NEW ORLEANS, LA-Today, the City of New Orleans provided updates on preparations as well as reminders of parking instructions, traffic restrictions and safety regulations in advance of the 2015 Mardi Gras season. Parades are scheduled to begin Friday, Feb. 6, 2015.

To keep the residents and visitors fully informed this Mardi Gras season, the City has launched a Mardi Gras Information and Updates website at www.nola.gov/mardigras

  <http://clicks.skem1.com/trkr/?c=15553&g=23503&p=ac7bfd9a5cfd1f9c536288e347c486b3&u=0ea87b83a5a6b819692fe9cd1d31da4d&q=&t=1>

 . The City has compiled updates on safety regulations, enforcement policies, permitting information, and helpful suggestions, including interactive parade maps in one location so that residents and visitors can be better prepared before heading out to the parades.

"With construction projects in parts of the city expected to cause heavy traffic delays, the 2015 Mardi Gras season will be challenging, but the City of New Orleans is ready," Mayor Mitch Landrieu said. "City departments have been preparing for months and together with our federal, state, and local partners, we are excited to once again host the 'greatest free show on earth.' This year, we encourage all residents and visitors to make a plan before heading out to the parades. Hosting Mardi Gras is a team effort. Let's all work together to make this the best Carnival yet."

SAFETY

The New Orleans Police Department will have officers staffed at 100% capacity throughout the city during the 2015 Mardi Gras season. They will be complemented by 150 officers from the Louisiana State Police as well as officers from other public safety agencies. The New Orleans Fire Department and New Orleans Emergency Medical Services will also have all hands on deck and be ready to respond to any emergency.

Along parade routes, the New Orleans Health Department will be manning First Aid Stations at the following locations:

*             Orleans Avenue and N. Hennessey Street on Saturday, Feb. 14;

*             St. Charles Avenue and Felicity Street on Sunday, Feb. 15 and Tuesday, Feb. 17; and

*             Canal Street and Carondelet Street on Sunday, Feb. 15 and Tuesday, Feb. 17.

The New Orleans Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness will be monitoring all parade activity and coordinating with the National Weather Service and the United States Coast Guard helicopter that will be providing overhead coverage for all parades.

TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers demobilized its construction and fenced in the neutral ground along Napoleon and Jefferson Avenues. There will be limited access to the neutral ground for parade viewing along Napoleon Avenue between S. Claiborne Avenue and Laurel Street.

Along Napoleon Avenue, one river bound lane and both lake bound lanes will be open at a minimum between St. Charles Avenue and South Claiborne Avenue. Napoleon Avenue neutral ground cross-overs will be closed at S. Robertson Street, Freret Street, S. Liberty Street, S. Saratoga Street, Daneel Street, Pitt Street, Perrier Street and Coliseum Street.

ST. CHARLES STREETCAR LINE

Streetcar service will be provided along the entire St. Charles Avenue route through Mardi Gras day. On scheduled parade days, St. Charles Avenue Streetcar service will be replaced with buses from Canal Street to Napoleon Avenue beginning approximately two hours prior to parade start time to allow access to neutral grounds by parade goers. Rider alerts detailing route detours on parade days are available at www.norta.com <http://clicks.skem1.com/trkr/?c=15553&g=23503&p=ac7bfd9a5cfd1f9c536288e347c486b3&u=017bca2e87df5617f58435af030664f8&q=&t=1> .

OPERATIONS

The City will provide 650 portable toilets for public use. The Department of Property Management has begun placing portable toilets along parade routes.

See map of portable toilet locations. <http://clicks.skem1.com/trkr/?c=15553&g=23503&p=ac7bfd9a5cfd1f9c536288e347c486b3&u=fd0ea98df89953771ee9d4e69851fd2d&q=&t=1>

MARDI GRAS PARKING ENFORCEMENT

In addition to permanent No Parking signs posted along parade routes, the City will install approximately 2,000 temporary signs. Drivers are encouraged to pay close attention to where they park to avoid being ticketed or towed.

Two hours prior to the scheduled start of each Mardi Gras parade, any unauthorized vehicle on any part of the published parade route will be ticketed and towed.

Parking is prohibited on either side of the following streets two hours before and after parades:

*             Tchoupitoulas Street between Jackson and Nashville Avenues;

*             Napoleon Avenue between Tchoupitoulas Street and S. Claiborne Avenue; and

*             St. Charles Avenue between Napoleon Avenue and Canal Street.

This will ensure public safety and facilitate the flow of the Carnival Krewes (violations result in a $75 fine and seizure).

Two hours after a Mardi Gras parade ends, any unauthorized vehicle on any part of the published parade route will be ticketed and towed. This is done to clear the route for the City's Department of Sanitation (violations result in a $75 fine and seizure).

Beginning the Friday before Mardi Gras at 6 p.m. until the Wednesday after Mardi Gras at 6 a.m., no on-street parking is allowed and no vehicular traffic except those issued permits are allowed into the French Quarter between Iberville Street, N. Rampart Street, Dumaine Street and Decatur Street ($50 fine and seizure).

Parking of recreational vehicles, campers and oversized vehicles is prohibited in residential areas. It is strictly enforced during the Mardi Gras season particularly in the Central Business District, Warehouse District and Garden District.

Before, during and after the parades, the City will extend enforcement efforts into the neighborhoods adjacent to the published parade routes. This will minimize non-residential intrusion. Parking officers will primarily enforce the following safety violations:

*             Blocking a fire hydrant ($40 fine)

*             Parking in a fire lane ($40 fine)

*             Parking within 15 feet of a fire hydrant on either side ($40 fine)

*             Parking within 20 feet of a crosswalk, intersection, or stop sign ($40 fine)

*             Parking on a sidewalk ($40 fine)

*             Parking on a traveled portion of the roadway ($40 fine)

*             Parking within 3 feet of a driveway on either side ($40 fine)

*             Parking on the neutral ground and subject to seizure ($75 fine)

*             Parking adjacent to the neutral ground ($40 fine)

*             Parking in freight/loading zone ($40 fine)

*             Parking in a handicapped zone without proper permit displayed ($500 fine)

*             Parking at an expired meter ($40 fine)

*             Parking in a Residential Permit Parking zone without a permit displayed ($40 fine)

*             Parking in the wrong direction (vehicles must park in the direction of travel on one way streets, and with the right wheel to the curb on two way streets) ($40 fine)

*             Vehicles that have unpaid parking tickets will be booted and/or towed.

Additionally, parking enforcement, towing staff and auto impound offices will work the following extended hours during the 2015 Mardi Gras season:

*             Now through Feb. 12 from 7 a.m. until 1 a.m.

*             Feb. 13 through Feb. 15 from 7 a.m. until 3 a.m.

*             Feb. 16 from 7 a.m. until 1 a.m.

*             Feb. 17 from 5 a.m. until 1 a.m.

For more information on parking enforcement, citizens may call:

*             Department of Public Works (Parking enforcement and information), (504) 658-8100 (answered 24 hours)

*             Information related to Residential Parking Permits, (504) 658-8200

*             Pay and release of boot, (504) 658-8083 or 1-877-314-3767

PARKS & PARKWAYS NEUTRAL GROUND ENFORCEMENT

The city's neutral grounds are the direct responsibility of the Department of Parks and Parkways; therefore, any prohibited items that are placed on the neutral grounds will be removed and disposed of immediately.

The following rules are being enforced:

*             All ladders used by parade spectators shall be structurally sound. No ladder, chairs, ice chests, chaise lounges, barbecue grills, and other similar personal effects shall be placed in intersections or between curbs of public streets during a parade.

*             Ladders, tents, grills and other personal effects shall be placed six feet back from the street curb.

*             Fastening two or more ladders together is prohibited.

*             Roping off areas of the neutral ground, public sidewalks, or other public property is prohibited.

*             Portable toilets are allowed on private property. A permit is required for those who charge a fee for usage of private portable toilets. Private portable toilets will not be allowed on neutral grounds, public sidewalks, or other public property without written consent from the appropriate governmental agency. A fine of $250 per day will assessed against the owner of the portable toilet.

*             No structures can be erected (i.e. viewing stands, bleachers) without a permit. The only allowed structures are those that are provided by the City Of New Orleans in city designated areas or those on privately owned properties that have been granted permission and issued permits by the City's Department of Safety and Permits.

GENERAL REMINDERS

*             No bulky furniture can be placed on neutral grounds.

*             Please stand behind the barricades when they are placed along streets while the parade is passing.

*             Please do not run between floats or vehicles while the parade is in progress.

*             Ladders should not be placed in the street or be tied together and should be placed back six feet from the curb.

*             Parade viewers may not throw any object at any participant in a carnival parade. Violation of this provision includes a $250 fine per violation.

*             Please do not stand or walk close to heavy equipment used in the clean-up process.

*             Items such as sofas and tents should not be placed on neutral grounds.

*             The juvenile curfew will be enforced during Mardi Gras. City curfew hours for juveniles are Sunday thru Thursday 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. and Friday thru Saturday 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. In the French Quarter, the hours are Friday thru Saturday 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

SANITATION

The Department of Sanitation is responsible for cleaning the streets, neutral grounds and sidewalks after parades held on both sides of the Mississippi River in the City of New Orleans.

Up to 600 City workers, temporary workers, and contractor employees are utilized per day in clean-up efforts.

The success of Mardi Gras depends on the City returning the streets to normalcy and cleanliness as soon after each parade as possible. Therefore, cooperation from the public on parking, litter abatement, and neutral ground restrictions is vital. Vehicular traffic will be restricted until clean-up crews have passed.

MARDI GRAS 2015 PERMITTING INFORMATION AND RESTRICTIONS

REVENUE AND PERMIT ENFORCEMENT

City of New Orleans Bureau of Revenue field agents and collectors will be canvassing neighborhoods in and around parade routes to ensure businesses (including ABOs) and vendors are properly permitted. Additionally, residents or businesses charging for parking at commercial properties must be properly permitted. 501c3 organizations may apply for an exemption for a portion of the fees associated with the appropriate permits.

The sale of silly string, snap pops, and stink bombs is prohibited. Bureau of Revenue field agents and collectors will confiscate any snap pops found on mobile vendors.

Food Trucks Inspection

Unless a Food Truck Permit holder also obtained a Mardi Gras Fixed Location Vendor permit, no food trucks are allowed within 2 blocks of a parade route, from two hours before the parade starts until two hours after the parade has passed any part of the route.

New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park Visitors Center

Every Wednesday, 12:00 Noon - 1:00 PM

French Market District--Dutch Alley - 916 N. Peters Street

(Between Dumaine and St. Phillip Streets)

Beginning February 4th - Free and Open to the Public

 Bring Your Own Fitness Mat

FREE PARKING IF YOU SHOP AT THE FARMERS MARKET!

(New Orleans, Louisiana-):  The French Market and The New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park are proud to announce another unique New Orleans-style wellness class that is free and open to the public: Jazz Pilates with Stephanie Jordan.

The classes will begin Wednesday, February 11th and will be held weekly from 12 noon to 1:00 p.m. at the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park Visitor Center in Dutch Alley.  Participants must bring their own fitness mat and are encouraged to arrive 15 to 30 minutes prior to allow time for parking, signing in, and meeting the instructor.

Why Wednesdays? The French Market hosts a new weekly Crescent City Farmers Market on Wednesdays from 2-6 p.m. Farmers Market shoppers receive 2 hours of complimentary parking when they purchase something from the market.  Coordinators are hoping this new program inspires people to rediscover the French Market District midweek-and think more about health and wellness at the start of the New Year, and Mardi Gras season.

ABOUT JAZZ PILATES

Stephanie Jordan developed her Jazz Pilates technique after receiving her certification from Wise Body Pilates.  Jazz Pilates integrates traditional Pilates and dance movements with jazz to enhance the mind-body-spirit connection.  It is a muscle lengthening and strengthening program designed to improve balance and transform the body so that it functions at optimal capacity.

Jordan believes that the whole fitness movement is too focused on "Buy a membership, join a spa, purchase this equipment and you'll be beautiful."

Jazz Pilates participants are able to use what they were born with-their bodies.  The New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park Visitor Center provides the perfect venue to allow French Market District visitors to create movements that is beneficial to both physical and mental health-in a mere 45 - minutes to an hour.  Participants are introduced to the works of major jazz composers and performers while developing a lifelong physical fitness and emotional wellness through arts and fitness integration.

With all of the distractions in the world, the human body naturally retains the basic urge to create movement, to physically "get a lot of stuff out."  Jazz Pilates is designed to improve balance and transform the body so patrons may function at optimal capacity while working, playing, or just living life to the fullest.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

A world renowned jazz vocalist, Stephanie Jordan is consistently praised for her poise, elegance and soulful articulation. She draws frequent comparisons to her inspirations, legendary jazz singers Shirley Horn, Abbey Lincoln, Lena Horne and Carmen McRae. Critics have also likened Stephanie to jazz stars Diana Krall and Nancy Wilson.

Jordan has appeared live on NPR's Talk of the Nation, Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, Jazz Standard, Marians Jazzroom in Bern, Switzerland, and The Setai - South Beach Miami among others and is a regular at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Her current show continues her signature trademark of singing jazz standards from the Big Band era. It includes highlights from her self-produced CD; "Stephanie Jordan Sings a Tribute to the Fabulous Lena Horne" which honors the legendary Grammy Award winner who starred in many films.

Krewe Announces:

 2015 Honorary Muse -  Chef Sue Zemanick

Muses Mardi Gras Cup Art Contest

Award Winner - Myron Solomon of

McDonough #35 High School

New Orleans, LA - February 2, 2015 - Today, the Krewe of Muses announced that Sue Zemanick, Executive Chef at Gautreau's and Ivy, will serve as the Krewe's Honorary Muse.

Chef Sue Zemanick began her culinary career at the early age of 15 while working in fine dining restaurants in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. She quickly learned that cooking was her passion and calling. After high school she enrolled at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York. Graduating in the top of her class she was offered a position to work one on one with a Chef-instructor as a fellow in the seafood department. During that fellowship she developed a great love for fish and seafood which is what brought her to New Orleans.

Upon arriving in New Orleans she began cooking at Commander's Palace. She later moved on to cook at Gautreau's Restaurant under "Top Ten" Food & Wine winner, Mat Wolf. After working her way up the ranks she was promoted to Executive Chef in 2005 weeks before Hurricane Katrina's damage closed Gautreau's for over a year.

Upon reopening in 2007, Sue was named as a "Chef to Watch" by the Times-Picayune food critic. In 2008, Sue was chosen as a "Top Ten Best New Chef" by Food & Wine Magazine as well as "Chef of the Year" by New Orleans Magazine. Gautreau's has been consistently rated one of the "Top Ten Best Restaurants in New Orleans" by the Times-Picayune.

Sue was featured at the South Beach and Charleston Food and Wine Festivals and the Sun Valley Vintner's Festival. In 2011, Chef Zemanick was a contestant on Bravo's Top Chef Masters Season 3. In 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012, she was a top 5 finalist in the James Beard Foundation "Rising Star Chef" category. In 2014, Sue won the Beard Foundation's "Best Chef of the South."

"We are honored to have Sue Zemanick as our 2015 Honorary Muse. As an accomplished chef, she has all the right ingredients that make up a Muses woman. Her natural zest will be apparent to parade-goers as she leads the Muses in our Krewe's signature red high-heel shoe" said Krewe of Muses Captain Staci Rosenberg.

 Contest Winner McDonough #35 High School Student Myron Solomon

The Krewe of Muses winner of its 2015 annual student Mardi Gras Cup Art Contest is Myron Solomon of McDonough #35 High School. The annual competition is an activity planned by the Muses Community Outreach Committee. McDonough #35 High School will receive a $1,000 donation towards its art program.

Muses Board member and Chair of Community Outreach Kathy Conklin said, "The artistic talent shown in the submissions continues to amaze us every year. We are proud to support art programs across the Greater New Orleans Area. Our mission is to ensure that students like Myron have opportunities to express themselves artistically and contribute to the rich culture of Mardi Gras and of our city."

The cup design is printed on more than 80,000 cups, which will be thrown by Krewe members from the Muses floats on Thursday, February 12, 2015 at 6:30 P.M.

The picture depicts an angel and a mermaid, along with the nine daughters of Zeus who are the Muses. In Greek mythology, the Muses are the Greek goddesses who preside over the arts and sciences. They were believed to inspire artists, especially poets, philosophers and musicians. All learning was under the patronage of the Muses. Schools commonly had shrines to the Muses, and any place dedicated to them was known as a mouseion, the source of our word "museum." Muses hold this contest each year to celebrate both the artistic and the educational aspects of the nine goddesses.

Krewe of Muses

Established in 2000, the Muses organization has over 1,500 members. A centerpiece of the Krewe's vision is philanthropic activities and the incorporation of the local artistic and cultural resources of the community creating Muses Mardi Gras traditions for parade goers and carnival season enthusiasts to enjoy. The 2015 Muses parade will roll on Thursday, February 12 at 6:30 p.m. The parade will follow the extended route, beginning at the corner of Magazine St. and Jefferson Ave., proceeding down Magazine to Napoleon Ave., where it resumes the traditional St. Charles Ave. route.

  A comedic dream team is poised to bring to life Camille, Charles Ludlum's hilarious cross-dressing comedy based on the classic Alexander Dumas story. Director Jeffery T. Roberson (better known on stage as Varla Jean Merman) will direct a cast headlined by A.J. Allegra and co-starring Ricky Graham, Sam Dudley, Sean Patterson, Keith Claverie, Michael Sullivan, Kristin Witterschein, Kyle Daigrepont, Jason Kirkpatrick and Erin Shaw. Camille tells the tear-jerker tale of a Tubercular Parisian courtesan, Marguerite Gautier (played by Allegra), that renounces her jealous, rich lover, the Baron de Varville (Ricky Graham) in order to follow her true heart to the countryside with poor young Armand Duval (Sam Dudley). But what will Armand's family think?! And what about Margueritte's worsening Tuberculosis??!? And how will the Baron take this spurning?!

This comedic melodrama with a surprisingly touching conclusion will have audiences laughing through tears and crying through laughter as The NOLA Project tackles another high-style comedy by the master of the ridiculous, Charles Ludlam.

ST. PAUL LUTHERAN CHURCH & SCHOOL CELEBRATES 175 YEARS!

What do the following have in common? Alexander Graham Bell's telephone, Thomas Edison's light bulb, Carl Benz's automobile, and Simon Hubig's pies?  St. Paul Lutheran Church and School at 2624 Burgundy Street in the Marigny, has been around longer than all of them!

St. Paul was founded in 1840, and was in existence before the invention of the telephone, the light bulb, the automobile, and Hubig's pies! Originally meeting in a firehouse on Chartres Street, a group of German immigrants met for a protestant church service which marked the beginning of St. Paul Lutheran Church, as we know it today.  Later that year, a German church school was added.

St. Paul Lutheran, on the corner of Port and Burgundy, has a rich history in the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood.  It has persevered through many tragedies, including two fires, yellow fever, and the Civil War. During Katrina and the harrowing days thereafter, our church was Ground Zero for the people in our surrounding neighborhood (http://jsr.fsu.edu/Katrina/Goodline.htm). The months and years after the storm found our members and school families spread across the state and country. Yet there was no question that once again St. Paul would remain and continue our mission in its present community. We are proud that although our membership spreads throughout the greater New Orleans area (as depicted in our logo), we continue to stay true to our roots in the Marigny, Bywater, and St. Roch area.  Many members have now chosen this community as their home, as well as a vibrant neighborhood they want to celebrate and improve. Moreover, generations of families send their children to our school and are happy to be a part of our church and neighborhood.

 St. Paul Lutheran continues to support the surrounding neighborhoods and their associations.  We offer building space for meetings and community events, as well as an accessible forum for civic issues.  We also enjoy hosting our own events that draw our neighbors and us together whether it be for fellowship, spirituality, or support.  We will continue to build upon our relationship of love and service to all those inside and outside the doors of St. Paul.

This year marks the 175th anniversary of God's grace and love at St. Paul, and YES...we are celebrating! Our theme LOVE ALIVE@ 175 is based on I John in the 4th chapter, "We love because he first loved us."  St. Paul Church and School continues to thrive in its original neighborhood by sharing our love with each other and everyone around us because God first loved us.  We want to share our joy and thankfulness by celebrating this momentous year with our present and former church members, alumni, community, and new friends and visitors.  Four major events have been scheduled which reflect our history and current dedication to EDUCATION, MUSIC, FAITH and COMMUNITY!  As our church and school celebrate this year, we continue to reach out to ALL...and welcome YOU to be a part of God's love!

With tempting aromas of dark cherry, blackberry and spice, Zin-phomaniac is a complex, full-bodied wine with juicy, approachable flavors of ripe blue-purple fruit and dark semi-sweet chocolate. NOLA Navy Week 2015

NOLA Navy Week 2015 will be smaller, with six vessels that will be moored along the Mississippi River's east bank and opened for public tours. More than 2,700 sailors, Marines and Coast Guard personnel are expected to visit the city during the week. The ships are scheduled to arrive April 23 and depart April 29.

The USS Cole, the guided-missile destroyer that was attacked by suicide bombers in Yemen in 2000, killing 17 U.S. sailors and injuring 39 others, is among the five active warships from three nations currently scheduled to visit the port.

The flagship for the visit is the USS Wasp, the flattop amphibious assault ship that also was part of NOLA Navy Week 2012. It embarked to New Orleans with a contingent of Marines and their fighting equipment.

The Coast Guard barque Eagle, also a highlight of the 2012 NOLA Navy Week, is scheduled to return in April. However, it will be the only tall ship this time.

In addition to the Eagle, Cole and Wasp, the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS James E. Williams, Canadian destroyer HMCS Athabaskan, and Great Britain's HMS Landcaster, known as "The Queen's Frigate," are tentatively scheduled to visit the port. France is considering sending a warship as well.

The ships will be berthed along the Mississippi River, with the Eagle moored at Bienville Street in Woldenberg Park

Manufacturing Victory: The Arsenal of Democracy

On view through May 31, 2015

In the Joe W. and D. D. Brown Foundation Special Exhibit Gallery

Ultimate victory in World War II was largely made possible by a tremendous American production effort that transformed the industrial economy and forged the US military. President Franklin D. Roosevelt called this the "Arsenal of Democracy."

Manufacturing Victory examines how the unprecedented drive of great leaders and industry brought America out of the Great Depression and united citizens on the Home Front. This national effort created a mighty military force, opened new doors of opportunity to America's citizens, and turned the nation into a global superpower.

Plan your visit today to see this special exhibit, on view through May 31, 2015 only!

Special Exhibit on View at The National WWII Museum in New Orleans, November 7, 2014-May 31, 2015

Follow the industrial journey that took the United States from a nation perilously unprepared for war to a global superpower that led the Allies to victory in WWII

Exhibition to highlight Andrew Jackson's role at the Battle of New Orleans

Display and additional programming commemorates the 200th anniversary of the battle

New Orleans, Louisiana - Two hundred years ago on a battlefield just outside of New Orleans, a frontier general and his motley force of regulars troops and volunteers defeated a larger, more experienced British army intent on capturing the port city. The Historic New Orleans Collection's new exhibition, presented in conjunction with the bicentennial of the Battle of New Orleans, sheds light on Andrew Jackson, the leader of that improbable American victory.  "Andrew Jackson: Hero of New Orleans" will be available to the public at 533 Royal St., Tuesday-Saturday, 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and

 Sunday, 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., through March 29, 2015.

"Jackson was the 19th-century equivalent of a rock star," said Jason Wiese, exhibition curator and associate director of THNOC's Williams Research Center. "He was one of the United States' most famous heroes, as well as one of its most polarizing figures."

Before he became the seventh president of the United States, Jackson was a relatively unknown Tennessee militia general. His success in battles with Creek Indians introduced him to a national audience, but it was his triumph at the Battle of New Orleans in 1815 that launched him to stardom.

"Chili in the Channel" cook-off slated for March 7

While New Orleans is best known for its gumbo heritage, gumbo's underdog cousin, chili, is poised to gain some attention this March at the second annual "Chili in the Channel" cookoff on March 7.

A fundraiser to benefit ReNew Schools, the event's second year promises to be packed with even spicier, meatier competition than the last, which brought out 15 restaurants (many from the Irish Channel) and amateurs to compete for the coveted "golden pot" trophy.

This year, 20 professional and amateur teams will go head-to-head for chili glory, and registration is currently underway. Interested in showing off your chili chops? Each team should have no more than six participants, and will receive a stipend for purchasing ingredients at nearby BreauxMart. Teams can sign up by e-mailing Scott Satchfield.

All proceeds from the event will go to benefit the schools. For more information and an ever-building list of participants and entertainment, follow along via Facebook.
