Offers Gratitude to NOPD, Public Employees and the People of New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS - Mayor Mitch Landrieu today called the 2015 Mardi Gras season a "resounding success" and thanked the NOPD, public employees, Carnival krewes and the people of New Orleans for helping make it all possible.

"Mardi Gras is the single event that transmits the authenticity of New Orleans to the world," said Mayor Landrieu. "We come together each year to do something better than anyone else and that is to celebrate the biggest free show on earth. This year's Carnival was second to none, and it was a resounding success. Thank you to Carnival krewes for putting on amazing shows, and thank you to the people of this great city for your cooperation and enthusiasm throughout Mardi Gras. I especially want to thank the hard-working men and women of the police department who were all hands on deck throughout Carnival season. The New Orleans Police Department handles major events and crowd control better than any police department in the country."

In total, about 4,500 dedicated public employees, over 1,000 Sewage & Water Board employees and 160 airport employees serve the people of New Orleans, many of whom directly or indirectly help with Mardi Gras festivities - working around the clock to plan, protect, execute and clean up.

"There is a tremendous amount of work that goes into the joy that people see in the streets. Mardi Gras is a team effort, but I want to especially thank the employees of the City of New Orleans who kept our parade routes safe and clean," said Mayor Landrieu. "We began the 2015 Carnival season expecting challenges with traffic and construction, but we had good plans in place and the public was cooperative and patient. The success of Mardi Gras also largely depends on the City returning the streets to normalcy and cleanliness as soon as possible, so I thank the people of New Orleans for their cooperation."

In the coming days, the cleanup effort will continue as parade viewing stands and public portable toilets are removed.

SAFETY - POLICE

The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) provided strong security coverage during the 2015 Carnival season, from Feb. 6 to Feb. 17. Every officer was on duty and working, with a majority of officers either putting in 12-hour shifts in a police district or a minimum of 8-hour shifts along the parade route. During the 12-day period, NOPD put in a total of 58,090 manpower hours compared to 55,700 in 2014.

"Our officers put in long hours over the past 12 days and did an outstanding job of ensuring the safety of our residents and visitors along the parade route and across the city. With the help of our local, state and federal partners, we executed a strong security plan that led to a safe and successful Carnival season," said NOPD Superintendent Michael Harrison.

NOPD was complemented by 150 Louisiana State Police Troopers, along with members of partners law enforcement agencies, including:  Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office, UNO Police, Tulane University Police, Louisiana Department of Corrections, St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff's Office, U.S. Marshals Service and the Drug Enforcement Administration.

In total, the NOPD made 443 arrests in the Eighth District and along the parade route compared to 501 during the 2014 Mardi Gras season. In the NOPD Eighth District alone, which includes the French Quarter, Marigny, and Central Business District, officers responded to approximately 3,250 calls for service and made 366 arrests, compared to 2,900 calls for service and 421 arrests during the Mardi Gras 2014 season. The arrest numbers in the Eighth District represent a continued decline in the number of arrests made in the past four years during the Carnival season thanks to strong police presence and cooperation from the public. In addition, solid police work and proactive patrolling led police to make a total of 16 gun arrests and take a total of 14 guns off the streets.

SAFETY - FIRE & EMS

The New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) responded to 1,414 fire and medical calls for service during the Mardi Gras season including nine working structure fires. The NOFD also inspected 34 parades, which included: 792 traditional floats, 175 truck floats and 312 parade flambeauxes. The department also inspected 88 mobile food vendors for compliance. The NOFD also distributed over 22,000 cups, as parade throws, promoting the department's "Free Smoke Alarm Installation Program." NOFD members also worked alongside Sanitation Department personnel, providing traffic safety during post-parade debris removal. NOFD also created a barricade group to manage the positioning and removal of barricades before and after parades.

New Orleans EMS responded to 2,367 emergency service calls, resulting in a call every six minutes - the department's busiest Carnival season to date. In conjunction with the New Orleans Health Department (NOHD) Medical Reserve Corps, they also operated three First Aid stations over three days and provided foot patrols during parades. In total, NOHD assisted 138 people and provided care to 47 people during Mardi Gras, 22 of which were transported by EMS.

SANITATION

For the 2015 Mardi Gras season, the Department of Sanitation utilized 118 pieces of equipment and more than 600 City workers, temporary workers, and contractor employees to clean up the streets and neutral grounds following parades each day. All of these laborers worked tremendously hard to return the city streets to normalcy. In general, all routes were cleaned within three hours of the conclusion of a parade.

"The City's Sanitation Department and its partners did an outstanding job coordinating one of the best and quickest cleanup operations yet," said Ava Rodgers, deputy chief administrative officer for operations. "Our cleaning crews worked very long nights to take on an incredibly challenging task. Their dedication to the people of New Orleans is commendable, and we sincerely thank them for what they do. As cleanup efforts continue, we ask for the public's patience and understanding."

For the second consecutive year, the City used Mardi Gras clean-up to provide employment opportunities for ex-offenders and the chronically hard to employ.  In 2014, the City made up to 50 clean-up jobs available for these groups per parade night.  Based on the success of last year, the City tripled the program, making up to 150 jobs available per night during the 2015 Carnival season. In addition to the job for Carnival season, participants received training in how to search for a job and workplace expectations.

The total tonnage of debris cleared off the streets during Mardi Gras will be announced next week. The City also no longer views success by tonnage of debris collected, especially as the City continues to promote recycling. Residents may bring Mardi Gras beads for recycling to the City's Sanitation Yard, located at 2829 Elysian Fields Ave., on Feb. 21 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. There are also several local non-profits that accept Mardi Gras beads for recycling.

OPERATIONS

The City placed 650 portable toilets along the parade routes for Mardi Gras this year, and they are scheduled to be removed by Friday, Feb. 20. The City also issued close to 300 permits for reviewing stands, concessions and parking. All City-constructed viewing stands will be fully disassembled by Friday, Feb. 27.

To keep residents and visitors fully informed this Mardi Gras season, the City once again utilized a Mardi Gras Information and Updates website at www.nola.gov/mardigras. The site provided residents and visitors with safety regulations, enforcement policies, permitting information, and helpful suggestions, including interactive parade maps. The website received more than 10,000 views in the 30 days before Fat Tuesday.

PARKING ENFORCEMENT

In addition to permanent No Parking signs posted along parade routes, the City installed approximately 4,000 temporary No Parking signs. Parking on either side of Napoleon Avenue between Tchoupitoulas Street and South Claiborne Avenue was prohibited two hours before and after any Mardi Gras parade whose route travelled on Napoleon Avenue. Parking was also prohibited on either side of St. Charles Avenue between Napoleon Avenue and Canal Street two hours before or after any Mardi Gras parade whose route travels on St. Charles Avenue. The City monitored parking very closely so that First Responders and the public had clear access to the public right of way and to facilitate the clearing of debris by Sanitation crews following parades.

The City issued 22,475 citations, booted 553 vehicles and towed 799 vehicles on parade days. In 2014, the City issued 18,816 citations, booted 497 vehicles and towed 847 vehicles on parade days.

AIRPORT

Over the Mardi Gras holiday, the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport saw a six-year high number of passengers traveling through the airport. Over an eight day period beginning Friday, Feb. 13 through Friday, Feb. 20, 2015, the airport expects to have over 139,000 passengers depart, a 2.5 percent increase over 2014 and a 37 percent increase over 2010. Over 20,000 passengers are scheduled to depart New Orleans on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2015, as the Mardi Gras season comes to a close.

VISITOR ATTRACTIONS

The President's Day holiday gave many visitors a three-day weekend to enjoy the Mardi Gras festivities, so occupancy was high. According to a survey of New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau member hotels, hotel occupancy was over 97 percent for the second weekend of Mardi Gras, with many hotels at 100 percent. Revelers also extended their visits as occupancy remained high through Fat Tuesday. Mardi Gras has about a $500 million economic impact on New Orleans, according to a 2014 Tulane University economic impact study.

"2015 Mardi Gras proved once again to be the authentic and iconic celebration that both visitors and locals of all ages have enjoyed for over a hundred years," said Mark Romig, President and CEO of the New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corporation (NOTMC). "This year also saw an extended period of wonderful parade-going weather, which added to the enjoyment of watching the magnificent floats, marching bands and costumes. Finally, New Orleans' Mardi Gras helps support the 81,000 jobs in the hospitality industry. As an annual festival, Mardi Gras is one of our most important economic engines."

Ogden After Hours - Leyla McCalla
February 19, 2015

Southern Music

6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Main Floor of Goldring Hall

Leyla McCalla finds inspiration from a variety of sources, whether it is her Haitian heritage, living in New Orleans or dancing at Cajun Mardi Gras. She is a multi-instrumentalist and singer whose distinctive sound is impossible to replicate.

McCalla's music reflects her eclectic and diverse life experiences, projecting a respect for eloquent simplicity that is rarely achieved. Born in New York City to Haitian immigrant parents, McCalla was raised in suburban New Jersey. As a teenager, she relocated to Accra, Ghana for two years. Upon her return, she attended Smith College for a year before transferring to New York University where she studied cello performance and chamber music. Armed with Bach's Cello Suites, Leyla moved to New Orleans to perform on the streets of the French Quarter.

It was the move to New Orleans that signaled a journey of musical and cultural discovery for Leyla. "New Orleans always felt like home to me," she recalls. "The more I learned about the history of Louisiana, its ties to Haiti and French speaking culture, the more sense of belonging I felt and continue to feel." Most recently, Leyla has fallen in love with the late Louisiana Creole fiddlers Canray Fontenot and Bébé Carrière and has explored their fiddling styles on the cello.

In New Orleans, McCalla was introduced to renowned African-American string band Carolina Chocolate Drops and appeared on their GRAMMY-nominated album Leaving Eden. She toured extensively with the group until deciding to focus on her solo career.

McCalla's debut album, Vari-Colored Songs: A Tribute to Langston Hughes, was released in February 2014. The album consists of compositions she has written to Langston Hughes poetry, Haitian folk songs and original pieces.

Tet, the Vietnamese New Year, and accompanying annual celebration at Mary Queen of Vietnam Church (14001 Dwyer Blvd.) in New Orleans East.

Held Feb. 20-22, the celebration offers a wide range of performances, games, raffles and beyond for the whole family. Most important? It's the one weekend a year to sample Vietnamese delicacies not typical found on a menu next to pho .

While spring rolls, banh mi, Vietnamese egg rolls and (yes) different varieties of pho will be available in celebration of the Year of the Goat, festival attendees should look beyond the familiar.

Starting off your culinary excursions with a goat dish like lau de (a spicy, hearty goat hot pot made with fresh, aromatic herbs and noodles) would be an appropriate kick off for 2015. Hot vit lon (boiled, "half-hatched" duck eggs), bahn day (sticky rice cakes) and banh chung (square pouches of sticky rice with mung bean and meat wrapped in banana leaves) are snack-sized options for those intent on pacing themselves. My favorite offering each year is tiet canh, a dish made out of goat (or duck) blood and pieces of gizzard or liver topped with chilies, fish sauce, herbs and a squeeze of lemon.

On the sweet side of things, fried banana fritters (chuoi chien) are cooked up in giant cauldrons of bubbling oil and prove to be an ideal crispy, melt-in-your-mouth end to a meal.

METAIRIE, LA - Carol Fleischman, a registered life coach, will talk about how patrons can create a vision for their lives, especially those in the second half of their lives, at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 19at the West Bank Regional Library, 2751 Manhattan Blvd., Harvey.

This event is free of charge and is open to the public. Registration is not required.

This event is held in conjunction with the Jefferson Parish Office of Senior Services.

According to Fleischman, life coaching is a synergistic relationship between an accredited life coach and a client designed to tap into your full potential. It is profoundly different from consulting, mentoring, advice, therapy, or counseling. The coaching process addresses specific personal projects, business successes, general conditions and transitions in the client's personal life, relationships or profession by examining what is going on right now, discovering what obstacles or challenges might be, and choosing a course of action to make one's life be what is wanted.

Fleischman specializes in working with individuals and businesses in transition. She designs personal programs for each client. Besides individuals, she serves the business, education, government, and nonprofit sectors on the national, state and local levels. Her areas of expertise include health and wellness, faith-based institutions, collaborative planning, aging, and housing and homelessness.

Fleischman says people are staying healthy and living longer than ever imagined and the old images of growing older no longer hold. The new reality of aging is that everyone must plan and prepare to live long, healthy productive lives.

Fleischman operates Fleischman Associates which was established in 1985. To date, she has worked with more than 300 clients that range across corporate, health care, education, arts, community service, and public sectors.

A comedic dream team is poised to bring to life Camille, Charles Ludlum's hilarious cross-dressing comedy based on the classic Alexander Dumas story. Director Jeffery T. Roberson (better known on stage as Varla Jean Merman) will direct a cast headlined by A.J. Allegra and co-starring Ricky Graham, Sam Dudley, Sean Patterson, Keith Claverie, Michael Sullivan, Kristin Witterschein, Kyle Daigrepont, Jason Kirkpatrick and Erin Shaw. Camille tells the tear-jerker tale of a Tubercular Parisian courtesan, Marguerite Gautier (played by Allegra), that renounces her jealous, rich lover, the Baron de Varville (Ricky Graham) in order to follow her true heart to the countryside with poor young Armand Duval (Sam Dudley). But what will Armand's family think?! And what about Margueritte's worsening Tuberculosis??!? And how will the Baron take this spurning?!

This comedic melodrama with a surprisingly touching conclusion will have audiences laughing through tears and crying through laughter as The NOLA Project tackles another high-style comedy by the master of the ridiculous, Charles Ludlam.

Every Wednesday, 12:00 Noon - 1:00 PM

French Market District--Dutch Alley - 916 N. Peters Street

(Between Dumaine and St. Phillip Streets)

Beginning February 4th - Free and Open to the Public

 Bring Your Own Fitness Mat

FREE PARKING IF YOU SHOP AT THE FARMERS MARKET!

(New Orleans, Louisiana-):  The French Market and The New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park are proud to announce another unique New Orleans-style wellness class that is free and open to the public: Jazz Pilates with Stephanie Jordan.

The classes will begin Wednesday, February 11th and will be held weekly from 12 noon to 1:00 p.m. at the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park Visitor Center in Dutch Alley.  Participants must bring their own fitness mat and are encouraged to arrive 15 to 30 minutes prior to allow time for parking, signing in, and meeting the instructor.

Why Wednesdays? The French Market hosts a new weekly Crescent City Farmers Market on Wednesdays from 2-6 p.m. Farmers Market shoppers receive 2 hours of complimentary parking when they purchase something from the market.  Coordinators are hoping this new program inspires people to rediscover the French Market District midweek-and think more about health and wellness at the start of the New Year, and Mardi Gras season.

ABOUT JAZZ PILATES

Stephanie Jordan developed her Jazz Pilates technique after receiving her certification from Wise Body Pilates.  Jazz Pilates integrates traditional Pilates and dance movements with jazz to enhance the mind-body-spirit connection.  It is a muscle lengthening and strengthening program designed to improve balance and transform the body so that it functions at optimal capacity.

Jordan believes that the whole fitness movement is too focused on "Buy a membership, join a spa, purchase this equipment and you'll be beautiful."

Jazz Pilates participants are able to use what they were born with-their bodies.  The New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park Visitor Center provides the perfect venue to allow French Market District visitors to create movements that is beneficial to both physical and mental health-in a mere 45 - minutes to an hour.  Participants are introduced to the works of major jazz composers and performers while developing a lifelong physical fitness and emotional wellness through arts and fitness integration.

With all of the distractions in the world, the human body naturally retains the basic urge to create movement, to physically "get a lot of stuff out."  Jazz Pilates is designed to improve balance and transform the body so patrons may function at optimal capacity while working, playing, or just living life to the fullest.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

A world renowned jazz vocalist, Stephanie Jordan is consistently praised for her poise, elegance and soulful articulation. She draws frequent comparisons to her inspirations, legendary jazz singers Shirley Horn, Abbey Lincoln, Lena Horne and Carmen McRae. Critics have also likened Stephanie to jazz stars Diana Krall and Nancy Wilson.

Jordan has appeared live on NPR's Talk of the Nation, Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, Jazz Standard, Marians Jazzroom in Bern, Switzerland, and The Setai - South Beach Miami among others and is a regular at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Her current show continues her signature trademark of singing jazz standards from the Big Band era. It includes highlights from her self-produced CD; "Stephanie Jordan Sings a Tribute to the Fabulous Lena Horne" which honors the legendary Grammy Award winner who starred in many films.

ST. PAUL LUTHERAN CHURCH & SCHOOL CELEBRATES 175 YEARS!

What do the following have in common? Alexander Graham Bell's telephone, Thomas Edison's light bulb, Carl Benz's automobile, and Simon Hubig's pies?  St. Paul Lutheran Church and School at 2624 Burgundy Street in the Marigny, has been around longer than all of them!

St. Paul was founded in 1840, and was in existence before the invention of the telephone, the light bulb, the automobile, and Hubig's pies! Originally meeting in a firehouse on Chartres Street, a group of German immigrants met for a protestant church service which marked the beginning of St. Paul Lutheran Church, as we know it today.  Later that year, a German church school was added.

St. Paul Lutheran, on the corner of Port and Burgundy, has a rich history in the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood.  It has persevered through many tragedies, including two fires, yellow fever, and the Civil War. During Katrina and the harrowing days thereafter, our church was Ground Zero for the people in our surrounding neighborhood (http://jsr.fsu.edu/Katrina/Goodline.htm). The months and years after the storm found our members and school families spread across the state and country. Yet there was no question that once again St. Paul would remain and continue our mission in its present community. We are proud that although our membership spreads throughout the greater New Orleans area (as depicted in our logo), we continue to stay true to our roots in the Marigny, Bywater, and St. Roch area.  Many members have now chosen this community as their home, as well as a vibrant neighborhood they want to celebrate and improve. Moreover, generations of families send their children to our school and are happy to be a part of our church and neighborhood.

St. Paul Lutheran continues to support the surrounding neighborhoods and their associations.  We offer building space for meetings and community events, as well as an accessible forum for civic issues.  We also enjoy hosting our own events that draw our neighbors and us together whether it be for fellowship, spirituality, or support.  We will continue to build upon our relationship of love and service to all those inside and outside the doors of St. Paul.

This year marks the 175th anniversary of God's grace and love at St. Paul, and YES...we are celebrating! Our theme LOVE ALIVE@ 175 is based on I John in the 4th chapter, "We love because he first loved us."  St. Paul Church and School continues to thrive in its original neighborhood by sharing our love with each other and everyone around us because God first loved us.  We want to share our joy and thankfulness by celebrating this momentous year with our present and former church members, alumni, community, and new friends and visitors.  Four major events have been scheduled which reflect our history and current dedication to EDUCATION, MUSIC, FAITH and COMMUNITY!  As our church and school celebrate this year, we continue to reach out to ALL...and welcome YOU to be a part of God's love!

Lazy Magnolia's 10th Anniversary Celebration

This is a time to reflect on where we started and how far we still have to go.  In 2005, we built the first Mississippi packaging brewery since prohibition.  The memory of sitting on top of the brewhouse for the first time is still fresh in our minds.  We had tears of joy, pride, anticipation, and no small amount of terror streaming down our faces.  Our hard work was inspired by our love and belief in Mississippi.  Many of you have since come together to create a growing craft beer industry and blossoming craft beer culture in Mississippi.  Tens of thousands of you have enjoyed our beers and shared your stories of how you discovered craft beer, how we inspired you, and how craft beer has become a part of favorite memories and improved your lives.  We live in constant amazement at the impact Lazy Magnolia has had during our first ten years.  It seems like such a short time.  We look forward to the next ten and invite you to join us in that journey. See y'all at the party.  Cheers!

More than 2,700 sailors, Marines and Coast Guard personnel are expected to visit the city during the week. The ships are scheduled to arrive April 23 and depart April 29.

The USS Cole, the guided-missile destroyer that was attacked by suicide bombers in Yemen in 2000, killing 17 U.S. sailors and injuring 39 others, is among the five active warships from three nations currently scheduled to visit the port.

The flagship for the visit is the USS Wasp, the flattop amphibious assault ship that also was part of NOLA Navy Week 2012. It embarked to New Orleans with a contingent of Marines and their fighting equipment.

The Coast Guard barque Eagle, also a highlight of the 2012 NOLA Navy Week, is scheduled to return in April. However, it will be the only tall ship this time.

In addition to the Eagle, Cole and Wasp, the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS James E. Williams, Canadian destroyer HMCS Athabaskan, and Great Britain's HMS Landcaster, known as "The Queen's Frigate," are tentatively scheduled to visit the port. France is considering sending a warship as well.

The ships will be berthed along the Mississippi River, with the Eagle moored at Bienville Street in Woldenberg Park

Manufacturing Victory: The Arsenal of Democracy

On view through May 31, 2015

Ultimate victory in World War II was largely made possible by a tremendous American production effort that transformed the industrial economy and forged the US military. President Franklin D. Roosevelt called this the "Arsenal of Democracy."

Manufacturing Victory examines how the unprecedented drive of great leaders and industry brought America out of the Great Depression and united citizens on the Home Front. This national effort created a mighty military force, opened new doors of opportunity to America's citizens, and turned the nation into a global superpower.

Exhibition to highlight Andrew Jackson's role at the Battle of New Orleans

Display and additional programming commemorates the 200th anniversary of the battle

New Orleans, Louisiana - Two hundred years ago on a battlefield just outside of New Orleans, a frontier general and his motley force of regulars troops and volunteers defeated a larger, more experienced British army intent on capturing the port city. The Historic New Orleans Collection's new exhibition, presented in conjunction with the bicentennial of the Battle of New Orleans, sheds light on Andrew Jackson, the leader of that improbable American victory.  "Andrew Jackson: Hero of New Orleans" will be available to the public at 533 Royal St., Tuesday-Saturday, 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and

 Sunday, 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., through March 29, 2015.

"Jackson was the 19th-century equivalent of a rock star," said Jason Wiese, exhibition curator and associate director of THNOC's Williams Research Center. "He was one of the United States' most famous heroes, as well as one of its most polarizing figures."

Before he became the seventh president of the United States, Jackson was a relatively unknown Tennessee militia general. His success in battles with Creek Indians introduced him to a national audience, but it was his triumph at the Battle of New Orleans in 1815 that launched him to stardom.

"Chili in the Channel" cook-off slated for March 7

While New Orleans is best known for its gumbo heritage, gumbo's underdog cousin, chili, is poised to gain some attention this March at the second annual "Chili in the Channel" cookoff on March 7.

A fundraiser to benefit ReNew Schools, the event's second year promises to be packed with even spicier, meatier competition than the last, which brought out 15 restaurants (many from the Irish Channel) and amateurs to compete for the coveted "golden pot" trophy.

This year, 20 professional and amateur teams will go head-to-head for chili glory, and registration is currently underway. Interested in showing off your chili chops? Each team should have no more than six participants, and will receive a stipend for purchasing ingredients at nearby BreauxMart. Teams can sign up by e-mailing Scott Satchfield.

All proceeds from the event will go to benefit the schools. For more information and an ever-building list of participants and entertainment, follow along via Facebook.
