THE latest in the Creole Cat collection, called Parisian Baked, New Orleans Bred. It shows the French influence on New Orleans--especially through food and in particular, bread! It takes the Creole Cat to her home bakery, Breads On Oak.

The Creole Cat started in 2000, by me (Chamain DiPascal O'Mahony). Then I took a small break while we opened the Breads On Oak in 2012, and this is my first painting post bakery opening.

All prints are on my website, www.thecreolecat.com

and can be found at Royal Gallery and Casell Bergen in the French Quarter.

"Parisian Baked, New Orleans Bred" retails at $45, and is a signed, limited edition lithograph.

The wheels keep turning with the chapter, though, and we've got a nice little celebration planned for y'all next week. On Monday, Feb 23 from 7-9pm USBG in conjunction with Shawn Murphy and Campari America are going to host a happy hour at Bar Tonique, one of Campari's top accounts in New Orleans. This is a big thank you from the Campari team for all your efforts making last year's Negroni Week in New Orleans among the most successful in the entire country. We're already gearing up for this year's charitable challenge and will be looking for a chapter lead in the coming weeks. As to the happy hour on Monday, there will be food from Mr. Gregory's & Campari cocktails for you. And no one will ask to trade you a drink for some beads, we promise.

Degas exhibit

The Newcomb Art Gallery at Tulane University will present an exhibition of works on paper by famed French artist Edgar Degas on the school's Uptown campus starting this month.

From Feb. 20 to May 24, "Edgar Degas: The Private Impressionist, Works on Paper by the Artist and his Circle," will feature drawings and prints along with photographs, monotypes and sculpture.

In addition to the artist's works showing familiar horses and dancers, lesser-known depictions of antique sculpture and Old Masters will be on view.

The works come from a single private collection.

February 21 - May 24, 2015

Location: Woldenberg Art Center (bldg #81) - Tulane University

Address: 6823 St. Charles Ave, New Orleans, LA 70118

Times: 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

Phone: 504-314-2406

Visit Website

http://www.newcombartgallery.tulane.edu/

Featuring drawings, prints, sculpture, and photographs, all from a single private collection, the exhibition illuminates the background and personality of Degas the individual, as well as to present his skill as an artist. The show's subject matter is often personal: In addition to three rare self-portraits, depictions of family members and friends are also included. Works touch upon three notable themes of Degas' oeuvre: the human body, horse racing, and the ballet.  Enriching the exhibition are a selection of more than forty works on paper of well-known artists, many of whom were friends of Degas.

Author Event!

New Orleans Native Keith Medley Discusses His New Book,

Black Life in Old New Orleans

METAIRIE, LA - Keith Weldon Medley, author of a new book titled Black Life in Old New Orleans, will discuss and sign copies of the book at

7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 West Napoleon Avenue, Metairie.

This event is free of charge and is open to the public. Registration is not required. Members of the Friends of the Jefferson Public Library will be present to sell copies of the book to those who would like to buy them.

Two hundred years ago, on a barren plot of land just outside New Orleans proper, slaves and free blacks would gather on Sundays to freely practice religions both ancient and new. It was a sight unseen anywhere else in the country.

On drums made from hollowed-out logs and animal skins, drummers beat out the rhythms of their ancestors as dancers spun across the ground holding vibrant pieces of cloth that waved and flapped above their heads. Others shook pebble-filled gourds and tambourines or plucked away on intricately carved homemade instruments. From tables set up beneath billowy cotton awnings, women in headscarves sold pralines, pies, cakes and lemonade. And as the morning's church bells faded, the thumping drums and tribal chants of the revelers filled the air, bounding down the city's wood-planked streets, unceasing, past the setting sun. This was Congo Square, where the heartbeat of New Orleans was born.

The story of the impact peoples of African descent have had upon one of America's most dynamic cities does not end there. It is only the beginning. In this well-researched, articulate, and personal work, author and historian Keith Weldon Medley takes readers on a journey through New Orleans' African roots, from the early days of jazz through the Civil Rights Movement, highlighting the hardships and triumphs of a culture so integral to the city's unique identity.

Raised in Faubourg Marigny and a graduate of St. Augustine High School, Keith Weldon Medley earned his bachelor's degree in psychology and sociology from Southern University at New Orleans. As an author, photographer, and historian, Medley focuses his research on his home city of New Orleans and its African communities. He is a two-time recipient of the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities' Louisiana Publishing Initiative Grant, and his articles have appeared in publications such as The New Orleans Times-Picayune, Smithsonian, American Legacy, Southern Exposure Magazine, and New Orleans Tribune. He has appeared on a variety of radio and television programs, including NPR's Weekend Edition and BBC's How the World Got Mixed Up, and worked for a time as a New Orleans tour guide, educating visitors with stories of the city's history and culture. Medley lives in New Orleans.

NEW ORLEANS - On Tuesday, Feb. 24 the Louisiana Fourth Circuit Court of Appeal will convene at 11 a.m. in the Justice Revius O. Ortique Jr. Mock Trial Courtroom in the Professional Schools and Sciences Building on Dillard's campus. The session, which is being held in honor of Black History Month, is part of an ongoing effort to educate students and the public about the work of the appellate court. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeal Judges Terri F. Love, Roland L. Belsome, and Joy Cossich Lobrano will hear the oral arguments.

"As we celebrate Black History Month, we are cognizant of the fact that we stand on the shoulders of many great legal scholars, including Justice Revius Ortique, Jr.," said Court of Appeal Judge Terri Love. "To have the privilege of conducting appellate arguments in a courtroom named in his honor is a true representation of his legacy," she added.

The late Ortique was the first African-American elected to serve on the Louisiana Supreme Court. As an attorney and judge, he engaged in many landmark decisions. The Justice Revius O. Ortique Jr. Mock Trial Courtroom is part of Dillard University's Center for Law and Public Interest, which was recently established to assist undergraduate students who seek careers in law and related fields and to serve as a conduit to champion issues of public interest.

"We are excited about convening a real-life court session in 'real-time' on campus," said Dr. Gary Clark, political science professor and director of Dillard's Center for Law and Public Interest. "Our students are so fortunate to have this experience as undergraduates and to gain insight directly from seasoned judges and law professionals," Clark said.

Following court, Judges Terri Love, Roland Belsome, and Joy Cossich Lobrano, along with Chief Judge Kern Reese of the Orleans Parish Civil District Court, will host a "lunch and learn" session at noon in rooms 131-135 (across from the Mock Trial Courtroom). The information session will provide an overview of the appellate court process to students with an opportunity to ask questions about the process. Both students and the public are invited to attend the oral arguments on Tuesday, Feb. 24.

ABOUT JAZZ PILATES

Stephanie Jordan developed her Jazz Pilates technique after receiving her certification from Wise Body Pilates.  Jazz Pilates integrates traditional Pilates and dance movements with jazz to enhance the mind-body-spirit connection.  It is a muscle lengthening and strengthening program designed to improve balance and transform the body so that it functions at optimal capacity.

Jordan believes that the whole fitness movement is too focused on "Buy a membership, join a spa, purchase this equipment and you'll be beautiful."

Jazz Pilates participants are able to use what they were born with-their bodies.  The New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park Visitor Center provides the perfect venue to allow French Market District visitors to create movements that is beneficial to both physical and mental health-in a mere 45 - minutes to an hour.  Participants are introduced to the works of major jazz composers and performers while developing a lifelong physical fitness and emotional wellness through arts and fitness integration.

With all of the distractions in the world, the human body naturally retains the basic urge to create movement, to physically "get a lot of stuff out."  Jazz Pilates is designed to improve balance and transform the body so patrons may function at optimal capacity while working, playing, or just living life to the fullest.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

A world renowned jazz vocalist, Stephanie Jordan is consistently praised for her poise, elegance and soulful articulation. She draws frequent comparisons to her inspirations, legendary jazz singers Shirley Horn, Abbey Lincoln, Lena Horne and Carmen McRae. Critics have also likened Stephanie to jazz stars Diana Krall and Nancy Wilson.

Jordan has appeared live on NPR's Talk of the Nation, Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, Jazz Standard, Marians Jazzroom in Bern, Switzerland, and The Setai - South Beach Miami among others and is a regular at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Her current show continues her signature trademark of singing jazz standards from the Big Band era. It includes highlights from her self-produced CD; "Stephanie Jordan Sings a Tribute to the Fabulous Lena Horne" which honors the legendary Grammy Award winner who starred in many films.

ST. PAUL LUTHERAN CHURCH & SCHOOL CELEBRATES 175 YEARS!

What do the following have in common? Alexander Graham Bell's telephone, Thomas Edison's light bulb, Carl Benz's automobile, and Simon Hubig's pies?  St. Paul Lutheran Church and School at 2624 Burgundy Street in the Marigny, has been around longer than all of them!

St. Paul was founded in 1840, and was in existence before the invention of the telephone, the light bulb, the automobile, and Hubig's pies! Originally meeting in a firehouse on Chartres Street, a group of German immigrants met for a protestant church service which marked the beginning of St. Paul Lutheran Church, as we know it today.  Later that year, a German church school was added.

St. Paul Lutheran, on the corner of Port and Burgundy, has a rich history in the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood.  It has persevered through many tragedies, including two fires, yellow fever, and the Civil War. During Katrina and the harrowing days thereafter, our church was Ground Zero for the people in our surrounding neighborhood (http://jsr.fsu.edu/Katrina/Goodline.htm). The months and years after the storm found our members and school families spread across the state and country. Yet there was no question that once again St. Paul would remain and continue our mission in its present community. We are proud that although our membership spreads throughout the greater New Orleans area (as depicted in our logo), we continue to stay true to our roots in the Marigny, Bywater, and St. Roch area.  Many members have now chosen this community as their home, as well as a vibrant neighborhood they want to celebrate and improve. Moreover, generations of families send their children to our school and are happy to be a part of our church and neighborhood.

St. Paul Lutheran continues to support the surrounding neighborhoods and their associations.  We offer building space for meetings and community events, as well as an accessible forum for civic issues.  We also enjoy hosting our own events that draw our neighbors and us together whether it be for fellowship, spirituality, or support.  We will continue to build upon our relationship of love and service to all those inside and outside the doors of St. Paul.

This year marks the 175th anniversary of God's grace and love at St. Paul, and YES...we are celebrating! Our theme LOVE ALIVE@ 175 is based on I John in the 4th chapter, "We love because he first loved us."  St. Paul Church and School continues to thrive in its original neighborhood by sharing our love with each other and everyone around us because God first loved us.  We want to share our joy and thankfulness by celebrating this momentous year with our present and former church members, alumni, community, and new friends and visitors.  Four major events have been scheduled which reflect our history and current dedication to EDUCATION, MUSIC, FAITH and COMMUNITY!  As our church and school celebrate this year, we continue to reach out to ALL...and welcome YOU to be a part of God's love!

Visit our website at: stpaulmarigny.org

Please join us for these 4 major events!

Lazy Magnolia's 10th Anniversary Celebration

This is a time to reflect on where we started and how far we still have to go.  In 2005, we built the first Mississippi packaging brewery since prohibition.  The memory of sitting on top of the brewhouse for the first time is still fresh in our minds.  We had tears of joy, pride, anticipation, and no small amount of terror streaming down our faces.  Our hard work was inspired by our love and belief in Mississippi.  Many of you have since come together to create a growing craft beer industry and blossoming craft beer culture in Mississippi.  Tens of thousands of you have enjoyed our beers and shared your stories of how you discovered craft beer, how we inspired you, and how craft beer has become a part of favorite memories and improved your lives.  We live in constant amazement at the impact Lazy Magnolia has had during our first ten years.  It seems like such a short time.  We look forward to the next ten and invite you to join us in that journey. See y'all at the party.  Cheers!

Infant Massage is a parent enrichment program that provides loving touch from the start of a baby's life. It incorporates techniques that help promote social and emotional development, brain development and touch, adaptations for children with special needs, and bonding and attachment with parents and caregivers.

According to Guilbeau, early psychological and sensory input is essential in facilitating the development of all infants. Infant massage contains critical elements of bonding including eye to eye contact, smiling, soothing sounds, caressing, smell, and mutual interaction.

Benefits for the baby: Enhances bonding and attachment; promotes social, emotional and cognitive development; reduces gas and colic; strengthens and regulates primary organ systems; regulates behavioral patterns and promotes sleep.

Benefits for parents: Enhances communication and emotional ties; promotes better understanding of infant cues; helps parents unwind and relax; provides quality one-on-one interaction; gives fathers a special time to connect and bond;

The 32nd Annual French Quarter Festival

 is April 9th-12th

The 32nd Annual French Quarter Festival presented by Chevron is April 9th-April 12th, 2015! Locals and tourism officials call French Quarter Festival 'the kickoff to festival season in New Orleans.' What started as a neighborhood festival and 'locals' event' has grown into the largest showcase of Louisiana music and food in the world, with an economic impact of over $251 million. Last year, Huffington Post named French Quarter Festival the "one thing to do in Louisiana."

In 2015, attendees can look forward to food from some of New Orleans' finest restaurants at 'The World's Largest Jazz Brunch', performances from over 1,600 world class, local musicians, and an immersion into a unique cultural experience that cannot be replicated anywhere.

Allen Toussaint to Perform at French Quarter Festival

Locals' Day Returns

Allen Toussaint is one of the most influential figures in New Orleans R&B. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2009, and the Blues Hall of Fame in 2011.The celebrated songwriter, record producer, and musician returns to French Quarter Festival for the first time since 1998. Allen Toussaint will perform on the riverfront Abita Stage on Locals' Day, Thursday, April 9th at 3:45 p.m. In what promises to be an incredible day of music, Mr. Toussaint will perform after the Grammy award-winning Rebirth Brass Band and before the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra with very special guests.

The Very Best Live, Local Music Across 23 Stages

Two New Stages in 2015

Year after year, French Quarter Festival is voted 'locals' favorite' while also attracting a tremendous out-of-town audience. A huge part of the appeal is that attendees get a true and authentic New Orleans experience - a broad range of Louisiana artists and a diverse variety of musical styles and genres. Since 1984, French Quarter Festival has been committed to featuring New Orleans' finest artists every day of the festival, on stages all over the French Quarter. The tradition grows in 2015, when French Quarter Festivals, Inc. (FQFI) unveils two new stages and expands its footprint and musical lineup. The new Outlet Collection at Riverwalk Spanish Plaza stage sponsored by The Outlet Collection at Riverwalk and Harrah's New Orleans will take the music across Canal Street with three days of programming. The new Omni Royal Orleans stage located at 500 Royal St. will bring more traditional jazz to the street with performances on Saturday and Sunday.

Visit our website for the complete 2015 lineup, which includes over a dozen new acts.

http://fqfi.org/frenchquarter/schedule/stage

The 2015 French Quarter Festival will feature over 1,600 local artists. Festival organizers remain committed to growing the Musician Sponsorship Program; every dollar donated to the fund goes directly to the artists. In 2014, a total of over 250 individuals, foundations, and businesses signed up to support local musicians by 'adopting an artist.' Sponsors come from all over the United States - from California to Maryland - and are helping to keep French Quarter Festival free for the community.

Musician sponsor Shelby Russ, President and CEO of AOS Solutions, calls sponsorship a  way to enrich quality of life in New Orleans. "French Quarter Fest is one the quintessential celebrations of our abundance of artists in New Orleans. We believe the art that all of those talented individuals produce is the single most important driver of quality of life in this city. AOS has a long-standing commitment to reinvest in the community in which our employees and clients live. We are proud to give our sponsorship and our thanks to Irma Thomas and the entire French Quarter Fest team for enriching our home and our lives."

The Festival is still seeking 2015 sponsorships. Contact Georgia Rhody at (504) 522-5730 or email georgia@fqfi.org for more information.

Official French Quarter Festival 2015 Posters by Tami Curtis and Simon Hardeveld

Fleurty Girl Unveils New Kermit Ruffins Shirt Designed for French Quarter Festival

For the 2015 poster, renowned local mixed-media artist, Tami Curtis, draws inspiration from New Orleans musical icon, Little Freddie King. Little Freddie King hails from McComb, Mississippi and has a musical career that spans the decades. In the 60's Freddie played with the likes of Babe Stoval, Polka Dot Slim, Guitar Grady, Guitar Ray, Snooks Eaglin, Billy Tate, Harmonica Williams, Boogie Bill Webb, Rev Charles Jacobs (his cousin), Harmonica Slim and Eddie Lang. His 1970 recording, Harmonica Williams and Little Freddie King, is believed to be the first electric blues album recorded in New Orleans. Now into his 70's, Little Freddie has yet to slow down; since 2000 he has performed at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, French Quarter Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, Ottawa Blues Festival, as well as nearly a dozen European festivals. The musician has just released a new album, Messin' Around Tha Living Room. French Quarter Festival is thrilled to honor him with this vibrant poster.

Once again French Quarter Festival also features a special limited-edition poster created by New Orleans' most well-known French folk-art painter, Simon Hardeveld. Since the early 2000s, Hardeveld has entertained many with his hilarious and colorful paintings that hang in New Orleans restaurants like Boulangerie, Chickie Wah Wah, Lola's, and Joey K's. His pieces whimsically embody the unique culture of this spectacular city.

Last year for the 2014 Satchmo SummerFest, French Quarter Festivals, Inc. partnered with Fleurty Girl to create custom-designed, festival-inspired shirts. The partnership continues in 2015 with the Kermit Ruffins unisex tee, which will sell for $25.  All proceeds help fund the free, community event.

A Showcase of New Orleans' Finest Cuisine

In a city famous for its wealth of delicious and unique traditional food, French Quarter Festival gives attendees a taste of the best of the best at the 'The World's Largest Jazz Brunch.' A number of restaurants have been with the festival since its beginning in 1984, and have been great partners for 30 years: Pat O'Brien's, Trey Yuen, Tujague's, Vaucresson Sausage, Desire Oyster Bar, and Court of Two Sisters. Other festival favorites return for 2015, including Galatoire's, Muriel's, Antoine's, Praline Connection, Dickie Brennan's, Restaurant R'evolution, Bennachin, Love at First Bite, GW Fins, House of Blues, Jacques-Imo's, K-Paul's, Mrs. Wheat's, Lasyone's Meat Pies, Ruth's Chris Steak House, Three Muses, and more. NOLA Navy Week 2015

NOLA Navy Week 2015 will be smaller, with six vessels that will be moored along the Mississippi River's east bank and opened for public tours. More than 2,700 sailors, Marines and Coast Guard personnel are expected to visit the city during the week. The ships are scheduled to arrive April 23 and depart April 29.

The USS Cole, the guided-missile destroyer that was attacked by suicide bombers in Yemen in 2000, killing 17 U.S. sailors and injuring 39 others, is among the five active warships from three nations currently scheduled to visit the port.

The flagship for the visit is the USS Wasp, the flattop amphibious assault ship that also was part of NOLA Navy Week 2012. It embarked to New Orleans with a contingent of Marines and their fighting equipment.

The Coast Guard barque Eagle, also a highlight of the 2012 NOLA Navy Week, is scheduled to return in April. However, it will be the only tall ship this time.

In addition to the Eagle, Cole and Wasp, the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS James E. Williams, Canadian destroyer HMCS Athabaskan, and Great Britain's HMS Landcaster, known as "The Queen's Frigate," are tentatively scheduled to visit the port. France is considering sending a warship as well.

The ships will be berthed along the Mississippi River, with the Eagle moored at Bienville Street in Woldenberg Park

Manufacturing Victory: The Arsenal of Democracy

On view through May 31, 2015

Ultimate victory in World War II was largely made possible by a tremendous American production effort that transformed the industrial economy and forged the US military. President Franklin D. Roosevelt called this the "Arsenal of Democracy."

Manufacturing Victory examines how the unprecedented drive of great leaders and industry brought America out of the Great Depression and united citizens on the Home Front. This national effort created a mighty military force, opened new doors of opportunity to America's citizens, and turned the nation into a global superpower.

Special Exhibit on View at The National WWII Museum in New Orleans, November 7, 2014-May 31, 2015

Exhibition to highlight Andrew Jackson's role at the Battle of New Orleans

Display and additional programming commemorates the 200th anniversary of the battle

New Orleans, Louisiana - Two hundred years ago on a battlefield just outside of New Orleans, a frontier general and his motley force of regulars troops and volunteers defeated a larger, more experienced British army intent on capturing the port city. The Historic New Orleans Collection's new exhibition, presented in conjunction with the bicentennial of the Battle of New Orleans, sheds light on Andrew Jackson, the leader of that improbable American victory.  "Andrew Jackson: Hero of New Orleans" will be available to the public at 533 Royal St., Tuesday-Saturday, 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and

 Sunday, 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., through March 29, 2015.

"Jackson was the 19th-century equivalent of a rock star," said Jason Wiese, exhibition curator and associate director of THNOC's Williams Research Center. "He was one of the United States' most famous heroes, as well as one of its most polarizing figures."

Before he became the seventh president of the United States, Jackson was a relatively unknown Tennessee militia general. His success in battles with Creek Indians introduced him to a national audience, but it was his triumph at the Battle of New Orleans in 1815 that launched him to stardom.

"Chili in the Channel" cook-off slated for March 7

While New Orleans is best known for its gumbo heritage, gumbo's underdog cousin, chili, is poised to gain some attention this March at the second annual "Chili in the Channel" cookoff on March 7.

A fundraiser to benefit ReNew Schools, the event's second year promises to be packed with even spicier, meatier competition than the last, which brought out 15 restaurants (many from the Irish Channel) and amateurs to compete for the coveted "golden pot" trophy.

This year, 20 professional and amateur teams will go head-to-head for chili glory, and registration is currently underway. Interested in showing off your chili chops? Each team should have no more than six participants, and will receive a stipend for purchasing ingredients at nearby BreauxMart. Teams can sign up by e-mailing Scott Satchfield.

All proceeds from the event will go to benefit the schools. For more information and an ever-building list of participants and entertainment, follow along via Facebook.

WHERE: ReNew Cultural Arts Academy, 3128 Constance St

But sometimes we forget to put spaying or neutering our pet on that list of what it takes to be a responsible pet owner.
