The Wild Life Reserve Opens its First Flagship Store in Downtown New Orleans!

New Orleans, LA - The Wild Life Reserve will be opening the doors of its new flagship store in Downtown New Orleans, 111 St. Charles Avenue. The store will be stocked with men and women's clothing from The Wild Life Reserve collection, as well as carrying a finely curated collection from local and international designers and heritage brands. The flagship store will have its soft VIP opening April 4th from 4-8pm, to show our raw construction space and design ideas on live models. As the store is still under construction, this will serve as a sneak preview, with our grand opening occurring in mid April.

THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE BRAND

The Wild Life Reserve was established in 2009 out of a respect for history and a desire to put a focus back on producing quality designer goods. The brand's focus is to preserve New Orleans' involvement in the Apparel Industry and to continue the tradition of making quality goods domestically. The store focus is to educate the customer and ensure brand loyalty while bringing back customer service to retail, offering free alterations on all purchased items.

The Wild Life Reserve has made it their mission to preserve raw style through teaming up with other like-minded brands and designers.

For this reason #WLR is now #ONTHEHUNT to find awesome clothing and jewelry designers to feature and protect within the Wild Life Reserve Store front. Savoir Faire New Orleans, a Fashion Incubator, will be sharing the space with The Wild Life Reserve. The non-profit focuses on mentoring emerging designers from concept to collection. The goal is to give entrepreneurs the know-how to create jobs for themselves and others.

Song of the South

Just in time for the hot Southern Summer, Lazy Magnolia proudly announces the Debuntante Series limited release of, "Song of the South".  Our Berliner Weisse is crisp and refreshing, pouring a pale straw color under a bright and fluffy white head.  Lightly tart, with a delicate blend of sweet wheat and malt flavors that balance this quenching and celebratory ale.  Delicious and "session able", our light-bodied sour ale will be enjoyed all season long.  Song of the South is the first release from our Debutante Series, a small batch, limited release series. Look for it to hit the shelves later this month, available in 12oz single bottles and on draft. !

The Mid-South Legends Fanfest, featuring wrestling's legendary heroes and villains alongside a bevy of today's top superstars and future legends, takes place Friday, April 4, 2014 at the historic Sigur Center in Chalmette, Louisiana, formerly known as the Saint Bernard Civic Center and one of the regular stops on the old Mid-South wrestling circuit.

Some of the greatest names associated with professional wrestling in the past 50 years will be here, not only to renew old friendships (and rivalries,) but to meet and greet and talk over old times with their fans.

The Mid-South Legends Fanfest is a "dream come true" for any old-school wrestling enthusiast. It affords us an opportunity to meet, chat with and get autographs from the legendary performers from our childhood, photo opportunities with all of the wrestlers, question-and-answer sessions, live wrestling action showcasing some of today's top talents and future legends, and a vendors area with every kind of wrestling memorabilia imagineable; basically, "everything under the sun" that a wrestling fan could want.

Featured legends include Cowboy Bill Watts, the Rock-n-Roll Express, Jim Cornette and his Midnight Express, Mr. Wrestling II, Superstar Bill Dundee, Kamala the Ugandan Giant, the Fantastics, Mr. Olympia, Sheepherder Luke, Porkchop Cash and Dark Journey. The day's festivities will be hosted by TNA Knockout SoCal Val.

VIP-only Question-and Answer sessions will showcase some of Mid-South wrestling's greatest names and allow fans a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to ask questions they may have wondered about. A morning "Breakfast Of Champions" Q&A features two of the greatest tag teams of all time, the Rock-n-Roll Express and Midnight Express, alongside manager Jim Cornette and former matchmaker Superstar Bill Dundee. In the evening, Platinum VIP "All Access" Pass holders will enjoy a nice Cajun dinner followed by an intimate interactive discussion with former North American champion and Mid-South promoter Cowboy Bill Watts.

Additionally, many vendors will have "booth guests," including ECW original Tommy Dreamer, former WWE Diva Kaitlyn, Greg "The Hammer" Valentine and Marcus "Buff" Bagwell.

The "Battle Lines" Supercard, an evening of live wrestling action, will cap off the day's events with the inaugural "JYD Memorial Cup" Battle Royal, in honor of the late, great Junkyard Dog. Competitors from at least eight wrestling organizations will do battle on this huge seven-match card. Battle lines will be drawn when wrestlers from different eras and areas of the country square off.

All VIP "All Access" Pass holders will have early admission beginning at 9 a.m.

Platinum VIP "All Access" Pass holders will have exclusive admission to the Autograph Stage where they'll receive two free autographs from each of the featured legends.

All VIP "All Access" Pass holders will have first access to all photo op sessions, exclusive admission to the two awesome Question-and-Answer sessions, and a reserved Ringside seat for Friday night's live "Battle Lines" wrestling supercard! Throw in a free fanfest t-shirt, a copy of the full-color souvenir program and a VIP "All Access" Pass with neck lanyard and you have the ultimate VIP hookup!

VIP "All Access" Passes start at just $99 and are on sale now at this link. Any remaining VIP "All Access" Passes will be available for purchase at our Registration Booth the day of the event.

There is also a $19 General Admission ticket available for daytime festivities, as well as individual tickets for the live wrestling matches in the evening.

Please navigate the links at the top to see everything the Mid-South Legends Fanfest has to offer. Should you have any questions, please feel free to email us at Questions@MidSouthLegends.com.

Don't miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of a truly special weekend and celebrate wrestling tradition in the heart of one the greatest wrestling territories ever!

MICKIE JAMES WILL BE AT FANFEST!

Congratulations to Mickie James on her recent announcement that she is pregnant. Obviously, this will prevent the former WWE Diva from competing at Battle Lines, but Mickie James will be at the Mid-South Legends Fanfest, signing autographs and taking photos with fans beginning at 12 noon Friday. Autographs and photo ops will be $20 each individually or $30 for both.

PRESIDENT, MASKS, MOMS WITH MR. WRESTLING II (PART II)

A masked man entering a convenience store or a bank or even approaching the President would alarm anyone, unless it was the masked pro wrestling legend Mr. Wrestling II.

"I was probably the only wrestler to wear a mask who could go anywhere back then," he said. "In Florida, I could walk into a bank with that mask on, and no one would say anything but 'Hi.' Don't

Mr. Wrestling II (real name Johnny Walker) wore the mask meeting politician Jimmy Carter in the 1970s. Carter, who became Governor of Georgia, later won the election for President of the United States.

LEGENDARY MR. WRESTLING II AT MID-SOUTH LEGENDS FANFEST ON APRIL 4 (PART I)

What would you think if a masked man walked into a bank, hurried into a convenience store or even approached the President?

Well, if the masked man is Mr. Wrestling II, he is greeted with a smile and welcomed with open arms. Maybe not so much by the Secret Service, but definitely by President Jimmy Carter and his mom and big-time pro wrestling fan, the late Miss Lillian.

Mostly a fan favorite -- though II had his moments -- you can see this legend on WWE Network.

The shimmy, a patented running high knee lift and his fiery, sincere gift for gab, Mr. Wrestling II shined bright as one of the most popular wrestlers in the 1970s and 80s. He actually debuted in 1956, long before becoming Mr. Wrestling II.

Loyola
Loyola has free entertainment law symposium Friday

Entertainment Videos

NEW ORLEANS - A top entertainment lawyer is the keynote speaker this week at a free entertainment law symposium at Loyola University's law school.

Richard Busch was named to Billboard Magazine's 2012 list of the 100 most influential people in the music business for his handling of a lawsuit brought by rapper Eminem's former production company.

The symposium Friday will examine the local legal and business climate of film, TV and music production, licensing and financing.

Bush will discuss the suit in which the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals found that agreements between record label Universal and digital download providers like iTunes, are licenses, not sales agreements - and so Eminem was due far more royalties than he'd been paid.

The symposium will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday.

Sentimental Journeys is the major fundraising event for Longue Vue House and Gardens, a historic estate in New Orleans created by philanthropists Edith and Edgar Stern from 1939 to 1942. To celebrate their 15th wedding anniversary and Edgar's 50th birthday, the Sterns embarked on a 14 month trip around the world in 1936.

Later documented in a privately published memoir titled A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy and Other Countries, the Sterns' travels were the inspiration for Longue Vue's first Sentimental Journeys benefit in 1995. Now one of the premier fundraisers in New Orleans, the benefit, which provides critical support for Longue Vue's educational and civic endeavors, features world class cuisine, wines, and entertainment and culminates in an auction of one of a kind travel experiences, art, antiques, and jewelry- a perfect tribute to the Sterns' spirit of adventure and romance!

Sentimental Journeys 2014: A Night in the Gardens of Spain

Longue Vue House and Gardens will host its 11th Sentimental Journeys fete on Friday, April 4, 2014 from 7 p.m. until midnight. This year's theme "Night in the Gardens of Spain" celebrates the iconic Spanish Court at Longue Vue House and Gardens and its inspiration, the Generalife Gardens at Alhambra in Grenada, Spain. This event is generously supported by IBERIABANK with an exquisite menu from Chef Michael Sichel of Galatoire's.

Marigny Opera House & Mudlark Public Theatre present
Friday, 8:00 pm - Sunday, 8:00 pm

For the third year, the Marigny Opera House and Mudlark Public Theatre will present a festival of puppetry, with a different program performed on each of the two weekends. This year, audiences can see performances by puppeteers from New Orleans; Portland, OR; Asheville, NC; and Italy. The shows include marionettes, shadow puppets, hand puppets and giant-scale puppets. Tickets: $25; $15 Students/Seniors. BUY TICKETS

The New Orleans International Puppet Festival 2014 will string audiences happily along for two extended weekends (April 3-6 and April 10-13) at the picturesque Marigny Opera House, 725 St. Ferdinand St. Each weekend features a different lineup of marionettes, hand puppets and giant stick puppets, plus adults-only puppet performances at the always marvelous Mudlark Public Theater, 1200 Port St.

Here's what's at hand, as described by the folks behind the festival.

From April 4 to 6, look for:

"Hanging by a Thread," presented by actor-puppeteer Remo Di Filippo of Italy.

"High-Strung Harry's International Marionette Cabaret" by Harry Mayronne of New Orleans.

"Juancito y Maria" by Calliope Puppets' Karen Konnerth.

A performance by Sierra Camille and her giant-scale puppets, who create a "massive painted artwork live."

Pandora Gastelum and the Mudlark Public Theater

Watch as puppet master Pandora Gastelum describes the Mudlark Public Theater adult production of Blue Book: A Dioramic Guide to the Days and Ways of Storyville, as the troupe rehearses for NOLA Fringe Fest 2013. For times and tickets go to nofringe.org.

From April 10 to 13 look for:

"Secret of the Spider" by the Puppetkabob troupe from Portland Oregon.

"The Mysterious Metamorphosis of Mr. Krank" by the Toybox Theatre and Cripps Puppets of Asheville, N.C. (Awarded a grant for excellence by The Jim Henson Foundation).

"The Adventures of Puss in Boots" by The Mudlark Puppeteers of New Orleans.

All shows start at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25 or $15 for students and seniors. For more information, go to The Marigny Opera House website. Call 504.948.9998.

It only makes sense that Remo di Filippo took his time crafting the puppet, Gino, who makes his New Orleans debut in "Hanging by a Thread as part of the New Orleans International Puppet Festival. The festival kicks off this week (April 3-6) and continues next week (April 10-13) at the Marigny Opera House.

The festival also will feature works from local artists, including Harry Mayronne, Calliope Puppets and Sierra Camille. The following weekend (April 10-13) will feature works from Puppetkabob of Portland, Ore.; Toybox Theatre and Cripps Puppets of Ashville, N.C.; and New Orleans' own Mudlark Public Theatre ("The Adventures of Puss in Boots"), the host theater.

The New Orleans International Puppet Festival, presented by the Marigny Opera House and Mudlark Public Theatre, runs April 3-6 and 10-13, 2014, at the Marigny Opera House. Tickets are $25 general admission, $15 students. For information, visit the Marigny Opera House website.

A new addition to the Magazine Street shopping corridor is the newly opened Bin 428, a wine and spirits boutique located at the corner of Washington and Magazine Streets in the heart of the Garden District. The shop offers a selection of more than 400 wines, a variety of craft and micro-brewed beers, as well as an array of fine liquors and liqueurs.  Unique gifts, specialty gift baskets and party rental supplies are also available.  "We believe wine drinking should be 3 things: social, easy and comfortable," says Candace Latter, owner.

Bin 428 is the culmination of a long-awaited dream of Mark Latter (of the famed Tujague's Restaurant) and his wife, Candace. Their plans were put on hold when Mark's father passed away suddenly in 2013, leaving Mark to wrestle with the choice of selling the French Quarter property or maintaining its legacy. He opted for the latter and focused his attention on renewing and revitalizing the restaurant.
.
A grand opening Open House at Bin 428 is planned for Friday, April 4th at 5:30 p.m.   It will feature wine & craft beer samplings, as well as a small bites tasting from Tujague's menu.

Off-street parking is located behind the shop, and online ordering assures your order will be ready for pickup when you arrive.

Let us lure you in with Catfish Moon!

Catfish Moon

April 4 - April 13, 2014

By: Laddy Sartin

Directed by: Perry Martin

The old fishing pier out on Cypress Bayou has just fallen under the magic of another Catfish Moon. It was the favorite hangout for three best friends when they were kids-skipping school, skinny dipping and even experiencing the mysteries of kissing girls. Now Curley, Gordon and Frog are older, and have tasted the bitterness of life as well as the sweetness, and the pressures and problems that come with middle age eroding the closeness between them. In an attempt to recapture their friendship the guys decide that one last overnight fishing trip is exactly what's needed. On the pier, the weight of adulthood is lifted by laughter and their love of fishing. The three guys discover that their friendship was never lost at all. The poignant resolution of this hilarious southern comedy brings them to the realization that life is too precious and too short to let true friendship get away.

Frankie Valli, who came to fame in 1962 as the lead singer of the Four Seasons, is hotter than ever in the 21st century. Thanks to the volcanic success of the Tony-winning musical Jersey Boys, which chronicles the life and times of Frankie and his legendary group, such classic songs as "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Walk Like a Man," "Rag Doll," and "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" are all the rage all over again. Jersey Boys packed the house at the Mahalia Jackson Theater in January of 2013, as part of the 2012-2013 Broadway In New Orleans season.

The current excitement prompted Frankie to salute the decade that made him a star with his first new studio album in 15 years. In Romancing The '60s, he put his own stamp on some of his favorite '60s songs, the ones he always wanted to record but somehow got away. Produced by Bob Gaudio, an original member of the Four Seasons and Frankie's long-time partner, the set includes unforgettable new versions of such gems as "Spanish Harlem," "Call Me" and "Take Good Care of My Baby." And the album features a guest appearance by four young stars of Jersey Boys, providing background vocals for-what else?-"On Broadway." Launched amid Jersey Boy-mania, Romancing The '60s has become the latest classic in Frankie Valli's half-century of recording.

Ingredients

Sweet Potato Filling

2 pounds sweet potatoes, roasted and peeled

zest and juice of 2 oranges

1/2 cup light brown sugar

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Pinch of ground cloves

Pinch of salt

Barbequed Shrimp

16 jumbo shrimp (about 2 pounds)

4 to 6 tablespoons butter, divided

1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh garlic

2 teaspoons seafood seasoning

1 teaspoon cracked black pepper

1 teaspoon finely chopped rosemary

1/2 cup seafood stock

1/4 cup beer

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

juice of 2 lemons

4 5-inch tart shells, baked

sprigs of fresh rosemary (for  garnish)

Directions

To prepare Sweet Potato Filling: Mash sweet potatoes with orange zest and juice, brown sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, cloves and salt.

To prepare Barbequed Shrimp: Peel shells from the center portion of the shrimp, leaving the head and tail intact. Brown a small amount of butter in a skillet. Add shrimp, garlic, seafood seasoning, pepper, and rosemary; saut over high heat until shrimp are pink. Add stock, beer, and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a boil and cook until liquid is reduced. Finish sauce by whisking in remaining butter, one tablespoon at a time, until emulsified.

To serve, fill tart shells with warm sweet potato mixture. Arrange shrimp on top of filling, then drizzle barbeque sauce over and around the pie. Garnish with a sprig of fresh rosemary.

New Orleans

Sunday at 10:00 a. m., we celebrate Mass in a way that only New Orleanians can. Our Soulful Voices Choir opens the service as we sing and clap in both prayer and praise. After the readings, Rev. Quentin Moody, our charismatic, Belizean priest, delivers a homily that you will not soon forget. Sometimes solemn, and sometimes playful, Moody always preaches the Word in a way that touches people of all faiths.

Later, during the offering of the sign of peace, parishioners mill through the pews, hugging, kissing, and giving each other blessings.

After communion, visitors are asked to introduce themselves, but not before we sing happy birthday to those celebrating that week. After Mass is over, our choir continues to sing and

to perform as it does throughout the service: soulfully and joyfully. Performing a mix of gospel, jazz, and spiritual tunes, the choir pairs radiant voices with the piano, drums, the saxophone, the tambourine, and  the occasional trumpet

WHY:                                     NOLA Bike to Work Day raises awareness about the benefits of biking and regional developments that are making biking easier and safer for all.

Before Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans had approximately 11 miles of bicycle paths. Thanks to a grant from Entergy Corporation and a partnership between the City of New Orleans and the Louisiana Public Health Institute, the city now boasts over 82 with more planned or under construction.

For its efforts, the City of New Orleans has been designated a Bronze Level Bike Friendly City by the League of American Bicyclists - joining other cities such as Portland, Boulder and Austin who are designated bike-friendly cities. In 2012, the Alliance for Bicycling and Walking Benchmarking Report ranked New Orleans tenth nationwide for the highest number of workers commuting by bike.

Entergy Corporation, which celebrates its 100th birthday this year, is an integrated energy company engaged primarily in electric power production and retail distribution operations. Entergy owns and operates power plants with approximately 30,000 megawatts of electric generating capacity, including more than 10,000 megawatts of nuclear power, making it one of the nation's leading nuclear generators. Entergy delivers electricity to 2.8 million utility customers in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. Entergy has annual revenues of more than $10 billion and approximately 15,000 employees.

Bike Easy (formerly The Metro Bicycle Coalition) is a local 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to making bicycling easier, safer and more fun in Greater New Orleans.  New Orleans currently ranks eighth in the U.S. for bicycle commuters. The city now has over 80 miles of bicycle routes installed, with more being added throughout 2014. Such progress would not be possible without Bike Easy's positive working relationships with the Department of Public Works and the City Council. Bike Easy hopes to one day transform New Orleans into the most bicycle friendly city in America. To learn more please visit www.bikeeasy.org

The Petty Bones: Anne and Jerry Crowell continue as one of our house bands. They offer a delightful mix of eclectic songs accompanied by a variety of instruments. Anne has a wonderful voice that can range from sweet ballads to belting out some soulful blues. Jerry's voice has a unique raspy quality that blends beautifully with Anne's clear sweet tones.

Big Shine: Mike Pace, Hutson Brock and Charlie Harrison. Mike is a long time Opry regular. His virtuosity on the fiddle has given him the opportunity to perform with different groups. Hutson is very well known among local musicians. We have attempted to book him for the show for years, and now he will appear alongside Mike. This will approve to be a real treat.

Gal Holiday and the Honky Tonk Revue: Vanessa Neiman AKA Gal Holiday is very well known inn the New Orleans music Scene. She and her group are in high demand in the club and festival scene in the big easy. We consider ourselves fortunate to get her to perform on our stage, and she will bring some strong honky tonk country songs.

Shotgun Jazz Band: Marla Dixon can play a horn as well as anyone. This is one of those great groups that can please audiences in the New Orleans Clubs on the streets of that musically infused city. The New Orleans streets provide one of the greatest incubators for many stellar musicians ranging from Louis Armstrong to Jimmy Buffet. The contemporary street performers bring a special energy and drive to our stage, and our audience loves them.

May 17, 2014

Pot Luck String Band: Our third house band focuses on traditional Americana with an emphasis on bluegrass. Besides strong instrumentation and vocals, the band's leader Van Glynn always offers some fine historical notes on the songs.

Hanalena: These two sisters have developed a wonderful blend of bluegrass, and country music. They are currently based in Nashville, but are well traveled and have performed in some prestigious venues. They offer a great stage presence and their harmonies blend perfectly. They follow in the footsteps of singing sibling duets that possess the genetic blending that can only come from siblings.

Lost in the Holler: If you are a fan of very traditional American music, these people will be a real treat. They are yet another group who have displayed their talents on the streets of New Orleans. When they contacted us, and we listened to their music, it was an easy decision to invite them to perform at the Opry.

The Dapper Dandies: This is a returning group to our stage. They performed at our annual Music and Arts Festival in the past and were well received by the crowds. If you are a fan of traditional New Orleans Jazz, you will love this group.

Please don't forget that following every show, many of our musicians gather at the Abita Brew Pub to jam. Some of the best music performed on Opry nights has been at this after-the-show jam. It allows a blending of some really great musicians to play in an informal atmosphere, and some really great and unique stuff has come out of those jams

Carver Theater developers have announced an April 30 opening date for the long-shuttered venue in New Orleans' Treme neighborhood.

The theater suffered serious damage in 2005 when federal levee failures led to flooding across New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

The marquee lights on the historic theater flicked on just before Mardi Gras, but building owner Eugene Oppman was cautious about scheduling a ribbon-cutting event.

The free April 30 opening begins with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and

musical performances from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event coincides with International Jazz Day.

Details remain to be set for a planned opening night concert

TALES OF THE COCKTAIL 2014 OFFICIAL COCKTAIL COMPETITION:  TAMING THE HURRICANE

For the 2014 Cocktail Competition, Tales of the Cocktail is getting back to its New Orleans roots by celebrating one of the city's most renowned cocktails: The Hurricane. A legend of the French Quarter since the 1940s, the Hurricane has become a staple in bars around the world. Now we're challenging bartenders to pay homage to this classic cocktail with their own creations.

The Hurricane hails from Pat O'Brien's on Bourbon Street.  Whiskey was in short supply after WWII, while liquor distributors were overstocked in rum; their solution was to force bars to buy a case of rum with every Scotch purchase.  Legend has it that Pat O'Brien's head bartender, Louis Culligan, came up with the Hurricane as a way to get rid of all that rum.  Culligan revealed his recipe to "Cabaret" magazine in 1956:  4 ounces of gold rum, the juice of 2 lemons, and 2 ounces of "Fassionola," a brand of bottled red passion fruit mix.

How you reinterpret this drink for 2014 is up to you, but in order not to stray too far from the original concept, your recipe must follow these three rules:

  1. Your base spirits must include (but are not limited to) at least one rum.
  2. Your sweetening agents must include (but are not limited to) passion fruit.
  3. It doesn't matter how you get there, but the color of your drink should be red - or at least reddish, which is one of the hallmarks of the Hurricane.  So is the Hurricane's signature curvaceous tall glass; bonus points for crafting a drink that looks good in one.

WHY:             On the 100th anniversary of the Boswell family's arrival in New Orleans, The Historic New Orleans Collection brings the family back into the spotlight with a new exhibition.

"Shout, Sister, Shout! The Boswell Sisters of New Orleans" looks at the lives, music and legacy of the family that moved from Birmingham, Ala., to Uptown New Orleans in 1914 and became national musical sensations in the 1920s and '30s.

The talented trio consisted of sisters Martha, Connie and Vet Boswell. Their mother, who was fascinated by the rich variety of music in New Orleans, encouraged all of her children to study music. The sisters became classically trained musicians heavily influenced by the city's vibrant jazz scene. Together they pioneered the cheerful, close-harmony vocal style that brought joy to listeners across the nation during the Great Depression and later became emblematic of 1940s girl groups.

Today's music enthusiasts can rediscover the talented trio through the new exhibition from The Historic New Orleans Collection. "Shout, Sister, Shout!" celebrates the Boswell sisters with listening stations, memorabilia, photographs, radio scripts and notes from fans and peers.

Official 2014 French Quarter Festival Posters

By Varion Laurent and Simon Hardeveld

(February 5, 2014) - French Quarter Festivals, Inc. unveils two 2014 French Quarter Festival Posters by artists Varion Laurent and Simon Hardeveld.  Each year, the festival's Merchandise Committee selects paintings that portray the fun, festive atmosphere of French Quarter Festival that both locals and tourists will identify with.  Consideration is given only to local artists. To keep the festival free and open to the public, French Quarter Festival relies heavily on merchandise and poster sales, sponsorships, and beverage sales to generate its operating budget. Visit www.fqfi.org/shop

to purchase the limited edition 2014 French Quarter Festival posters and other official festival merchandise.

Varion Laurent

For the 2014 poster, artist Varion Laurent, a lifelong resident of New Orleans, pays homage to Grammy award-winning Dr. John, who returns this year to French Quarter Festival for the first time since 1987.  In this striking painting, bold colors capture the energy of the French Quarter, a perfect backdrop for Dr. John's charismatic persona.

In 1995, Varion graduated from St. Augustine High School. On a whim, his parents encouraged him to submit his portfolio to Xavier University's Art Department, and it was here at Xavier where he was first formally trained as an artist.  After Hurricane Katrina destroyed his entire body of artwork, it took Varion nearly two years to emotionally recover and return to art.  Since his decision to dive back into painting, Varion has garnered a ground swell of support. He was commissioned by the St. Augustine High School Alumni Association to create a portrait of NBA player, coach Avery Johnson; commissioned by the Gentilly neighborhood association to produce the first three posters for the annual Gentilly Festival; commissioned as the official poster artist for the 2013 Old Algiers River Festival; and in 2010, was selected by French Quarter Festivals, Inc. as the artist to produce the poster for the 10th Anniversary Satchmo SummerFest.

Editions:

2,000 Artist-signed & numbered prints, $45

350 Artist Proofs & numbered prints, $65

Poster Size 20" x 28"

Painting Size 36" x 48"

 Simon Hardeveld

Once again French Quarter Festival features a special limited-edition poster created by New Orleans' most well-known French folk-art painter, Simon Hardeveld.  Since the early 2000s, Simon Hareveld has entertained many with his jovially phrased paintings that hang around New Orleans restaurants like Boulangerie, Chickie Wah Wah, Lola's, and Joey K's. Born in France and later moving to the United States to start three of his own restaurants, with wife Maria Hardeveld, Simon found his true calling to be a painter at his brasserie in Metairie when customers always wanted to buy his signs behind the counter. Most well-known for his set design work on New Orleans evening news, WGNO News with a Twist, Simon has been commissioned by restaurants, stores, locals, and tourists to create special original paintings for anniversaries, birthdays, or just home dcor that captures the spirit of New Orleans. Overall, Simon's pieces whimsically embody the unique culture of this spectacular city.
