Vocal Tip

Last newsletter was about VOWELS and I gave you some very specific tools for narrowing those vowels.

Today I want to talk about VAC.         (Vowels, Airflow, Cords

If you have studied with me you already have a basic understanding of the voice.
In a nutshell if you can remember VAC (Vowels, Airflow, Cords) you will be mindful of the fact that we singers are in charge of ONLY these three elements.  We choose the vowel that keeps us balanced, we control the airflow and we maintain cord closure.  All else is handled by the robotic brain and out of our control.  We look for results in HOW WE FEEL, physically, while singing.  So remember VAC when you are practicing.  That is your responsibility in the technical application of voice control.
(If this is at all confusing, please come see me:)
check out the video demo at the end of this letter.

EXCERCISE:

The lip bubble is such a perfect exercise.  Maintaining the oeu vowel (like book) and bubbling through two registers on the long scale, see how many times you can complete the scale on one breath.  This will show you whether your airflow is under control.  I did it 7 times in a row without losing air, indicating I probably was not releasing too much air.  I can always get better too, but that is a very long phrase.     With this exercise you are controlling the V -VOWEL, A - AIRFLOW and C - CORDS "VAC".  See how that works for you.
