I t is remarkable how quickly this first semester has progressed! As of Monday, we now only have 14 school days remaining in the 2017-2018 school year. This  week and next week we are continuing with testing of certain student groups (please see below). While these assessments do not apply to every student, we encourage all of our Lions to make every possible effort to be on time and on campus over the next three weeks. It is only natural for students to be looking towards their winter break, but we want each student to have all the instructional time they can before the state exams next spring.

As for this week's issue, we have several student recognitions that I am very proud of. Between these weekly updates, please be sure to visit our school website for the very latest news throughout the week.

I hope this finds your December having opened on a very positive note and best wishes for a successful week ahead!

Sincerely,

Martha C. Chang
Principal

LNHS Advances in Samsung's $2 Million* National STEAM Contest
(Taken from press release)

Overview
Lake Nona High School, located in Orlando, FL, was named one of the nation's 255 state finalists in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest, a program that encourages students to solve real-world issues in their community using classroom skills in science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM).

Ms. Hines Classroom (1 of 5 State of Florida Finalists)
Jasara Hines's 12th  grade classroom was chosen based on their proposal to use STEAM skills to address providing services to immigrant students to assist them with the transition and success at Lake Nona High School. To tackle this project, students will create a database that will provide students with names and numbers of both onsite and offsite individuals/organizations that they can turn to for their needs.

Rewards
As one of five state finalists in Florida, Jasara Hines will win a Samsung Chromebook® to use in her classroom. Lake Nona High School will now have the opportunity to advance in the competition for additional classroom technology prizes. Jasara Hines is currently working on an Activity Plan outlining how her students will execute their project. If she is named the Florida State Winner in December, Lake Nona High School will receive a $25,000 Samsung technology package!

Performing Arts

On Monday, December 4th at 7:00 troupe 7434 will be having an evening of one acts that will feature our award winning one act, When The Hurly Burly's Done, as well as some special performances from the theater classes here at Lake Nona. Tickets are $5 and all proceeds are going to Hurricane Maria Relief. Last weekend troupe 7434 competed in the District V Thespian Festival and won many superior ratings. Our one act was selected to compete at the Florida State Thespian competition in March, which is a special honor given to only four one acts from the whole district festival. Our show is a blend of Shakespeare's Macbeth, the 80's classic Jumanji, and the Nextflix phenomenon Stranger Things. Come to our evening of one acts to see the amazing story we've created, we hope to see you there!

Monday's Motivational Moment
The Lake Nona community steps forward to help at Thanksgiving '17 . . .

Lake Nona High School would like to thank our incredible Lake Nona Community for donating Thanksgiving Baskets and Publix Gift Cards to the SAFE (Student Assistance and Family Empowerment) Program.

We were blown away by the incredible response we received and were happy to report that these generous donations allowed for the purchase and provision of over sixty (60) complete Publix Thanksgiving meals for our students and families in need. In facilitating this effort we spoke with each of these families, many of whom have been affected by this year's hurricanes, and they have requested that we extend their sincere gratitude to the community that helped them during this challenging time.

Thank you again for being a community that cares SO MUCH!
