DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital in Commerce receives Excellence Award for Patient Safety from the Economic Alliance for Michigan

The Economic Alliance for Michigan (EAM) announced DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital in Commerce, MI, as one of eight recipients of the 2018 EAM Excellence Award for Hospital Patient Safety. This award recognizes hospitals that consistently perform with high marks and improvements in patient safety and quality of care. DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital was among only three hospitals in Michigan to have earned the Excellence Award every year since its inception three years ago. The other two are Michigan Medicine-University of Michigan, Ann Arbor; and Dickinson County Healthcare System in Iron Mountain.
Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital is a full-service, 158-bed community hospital founded in 1986 to serve Northern and Western Oakland County. Other awards it has recently received include an “A” rating in The Leapfrog Group’s Fall 2017 Safety Score, which demonstrated the hospital’s commitment to delivering safe, high-quality patient care, and recognition in 2017 by the US News & World Report as a Best Hospital in Heart Failure, Hip Replacement, and COPD.

DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital is one of eight hospitals/institutes composing the Detroit Medical Center. Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital is a full-service community teaching hospital with 158 licensed beds, including 6 pediatric beds in a partnership with Children’s Hospital of Michigan. Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital features the Harris Birthing Center, a regional specialty center, the Charach Cancer Treatment Center, the Krieger Center for Senior Adults, surgical suites, cardiac services, and comprehensive inpatient and outpatient diagnostic care. The Hospital's emergency center treats more than 33,000 patients each year. Cardiology services include all surgical procedures except transplant, with four cardiac catheter labs available. Orthopaedics and oncology are also core service lines, with on-site radiation oncology services and a chemotherapy/infusion clinic. Obstetrics care includes high-risk pregnancy management, maternal/fetal medicine, and complete labor and delivery services. Critical care units treat cardiac, surgical, trauma, and medical cases.
It’s not often that a grassroots organization is around for 16 years, but thanks to the planning of co-founders Lori McVey and Pam Janson, Hospitality House has enjoyed many years of pure success. Opening its doors on February 14,2002, and starting in a space provided by the Walled Lake First Baptist Church, Hospitality House assisted approximately 200 families in its first year of operation. in less than two years, the pantry outgrew that space and moved to a temporary location in the Walled Lake Church of Christ. Soon it was decided that Hospitality House needed a more permanent home resulting in the rental of 1800 square feet of office/warehouse space. In late 2007, the lease was expanded to 3600 square feet.

Initially services were limited to shelve stable boxed and canned foods, but with a permanent home and more space came a walk-in freezer donated by the former Food Bank of Oakland County, a walk-in cooler donated by Lil Nel’s Pet Salon, and donations of several household refrigerators and freezers which enabled expansion into nutritious fresh and frozen foods.

In November of 2015, Hospitality House expanded and moved again, and opening its doors at our current location at 2075 E. West Maple Rd Suite B204, in Commerce Township. The new facility is approximately 8000 sq. feet and allows the pantry to service even more families that are in need. As a result of this expansion and our ever
generous donors, Hospitality House opened its borders in 2017 and lifted all residency restrictions entirely. We now distribute over 35,000 pounds of food to approximately 450 households every month!
A true blessing, Hospitality House looks forward to serving those in need for many more years to come!
