Principal's Corner

Dear Lakeview Families,

As I shared in the a past Lakeview News school newsletter, we are beginning the process of collecting parent feedback for the placement process next year. Each year we go through a careful process to make classrooms assignments so each student starts the 2017-18 school year in a well-balanced class. Much time, thought, and effort goes into this process.

Families have the option to share additional information to further assist us in this placement process. We ask that you do not request a specific teacher by name, experience level, or gender. Parents may submit this information to me by email ( sthatcher@lwsd.org with the subject line "Parent Placement") or hand deliver them to our main office.  Emails/letters should be returned to the school office no later than 4:00pm on Friday, April 14th.

Examples of the kind of information that can help in configuring classes include: changing family dynamics which could impact the classroom, newly diagnosed or potential learning difficulties, specific learning styles, peer relationships in or out of school, and any other factors which we might be unaware of that relate to your child's learning.

Thank you for your trust and support as we prepare for another wonderful school year at Lakeview!

Thanks - Steve

Houghton Center Redevelopment

Lakeview Elementary PTSA members voted in a special meeting on March 20, 2017 to oppose the proposed re-zoning of the Houghton & Everest Neighborhood Centers (HENC). For information on the proposed re-zoning please see:  http://www.houghtoneverestcenter.com/ or visit the city website.

Why did the PTSA take a position on this re-zoning?

The re-zoning proposal does not consider educational impacts but merely defers that to the Lake Washington School District. It will continue to put pressure on our schools with respect to overcrowding. Lakeview is already overcapacity and will have classes in the shared spaces next year, and the city's proposed building will include 850 new apartments.  This is in addition to the new housing that is being built at Kirkland Urban.  The school district cannot keep up with current City growth and zoning. A negative impact on schools affects all kids living nearby now and in the future.

What is the project timeline?
  • March 23, 2017 - Open House & Joint Public Hearing with the Planning Commission & Houghton Community Council. 6 PM - Open House. 7 PM Public Hearing. City Hall (123 5th Avenue)
  • March 27, 2017 - Houghton Community Council Meeting - Recommendation to City Council. 7 PM, City Hall
  • April 13, 2017 - Planning Commission Meeting - Recommendation to City Council. 7 PM, City Hall
  • April - May 2017 - City Council and Houghton Community Council Final Decisions
What can I do?

Thank You!

A big thank you to the Selvar family, who made and donated this mural made entirely of Lego bricks to the school.
