Principal's Corner

Dear Lakeview Families,

As we shared on Monday, Lakeview will be recognized next week by the state of Washington with a Washington Achievement Award. This recognition speaks to the hard work of our teachers and staff on behalf of each student, as well as the care and support at home. As a school, we attribute much of the progress we have seen in student achievement to our focus on working as "professional learning communities," or PLCs, which simply means teacher grade-level or department teams collaborate to identify key learning targets, develop quick and timely assessment to measure student learning in real-time, and partner to provide support and extension for all students. Our Wednesday WIN ("What I Need") is an extension of our PLC work, with the goal of providing tailor-made, small group experiences for each student, whether she or he needs remediation or extension. Our goal is to continue to deepen our skill in working as a professional learning communities on behalf of every student.

Also, as May approaches and more students bike to school I want to remind you of our bike policy. Students in the 4th and 5th grades may ride bicycles to school. Before riding to school, a permission form must be completed and signed by the student and by the parent and returned to the office (see form on page 15). Bicycle riders are required to wear a helmet and have a lock for their bikes. Bikes should be walked onto and off of the campus for pedestrian safety. Skateboards and roller blades are NOT a safe alternative transportation to and from school and are not allowed on campus. Students who are not in the 4th or 5th grade may not ride to/from school without a parent. Please note that the school assumes no liability for damage and/or theft of bicycles from school property.

You can find a copy of the bike permission form by clicking here.

Thanks - Steve

Help Wanted:
Staff Appreciation Week

Staff Appreciation Week is almost here; it is May 8-12!  Let's show the staff at Lakeview how much we appreciate their hard work and dedication by making this an extra special week.  We need help from everyone!
Here's how you can help:

  • Donate an item for the daily staff raffle.  The more items we have the better!  We are looking for "auction" type items:  gift baskets, gift cards, tickets to sporting events, weekend at your vacation house, etc...  (no alcohol please).  Even small items can be put together with other items!  Please contact Jennifer Wilson if you are able to donate.
  • "Adopt" a staff member.  This is for our hard working non-classroom teachers who support the whole school.  Write them a thank you note, leave a candy bar in their box, drop off a $5 Starbucks card.  This does not need to be a big gesture; we just want them to feel appreciated too.  Sign up here.
Questions?  Contact Jennifer Wilson

Thank you for your help!

Lakeview Marathon Going Strong
Volunteers Needed!

Thank you to all the parents, grandparents and the Kirkland Firefighters for punching lap cards at the marathon so far. We still have FOUR more weeks for students to walk, skip, dance or run laps to finish one or more marathons during their lunch recess. Please volunteer 30 minutes to cheer on our Leopards and punch lap cards during lunch recess.  We could really use some volunteers, so any time you can donate would be greatly appreciated.
Student Book Drive May 1-5

Lakeview's 5th grade ASB student leaders are hosting a book drive May 1 st -5 th . This will benefit the The Lake Washington Literacy Council which provides our summer book packs for families in need.  Bring new or gently used books to school and drop them off in the school office.

Egg Drop
June 6, 2017 during Lunch Recess

Who's ready for the egg drop challenge? Can you create a contraption that will protect an egg from a 60 foot drop? The Kirkland Fire Department will be here with their ladder truck (as long as they don't receive an emergency call) to see whose egg will survive!

Register online  or with the paper forms that will be sent home May 8.   Rules can be found on registration forms or at   Lakeview PTSA Egg Drop.   Contraptions are due at the front office on  June 6, between 8:45 and 9:00am .

Eggs will drop at the following times:

Grades 2 & 3: 11:50-12:20
Grades K & 5: 12:25-12:55
Grades 1 & 4: 1:00-1:30

Attention Fifth Grade Parents:
Save the Date!

Parents of fifth graders, mark your calendars: the fifth grade graduation ceremony and celebration will be held on Thursday, June 22nd!  The graduation ceremony is held just after school starts and is open to all.  The rest of the day's activities are open to volunteers and chaperones, and of course our new "grads."

We will be sending home an e-mail and a hard copy of the day's schedule at the beginning of June, so stay tuned.  Thanks!
