Greetings Members,
Nearly a year has passed since I was given the opportunity to lead our Chamber of Commerce, and how quickly time has flown. As a group, I feel that you took a chance on me as Chairwoman, and I so appreciate and will cherish the confidence you placed in me to do this job. Working for a public sector employer, amongst all of the many businesses that are members of the Chamber, has given me time for reflection on what our students need to be successful members of the work force on the completion of their education. Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom, your experience, and your genuine concern for our community with me throughout this year. More than that thank you so much for welcoming me to be part of such a dynamic group of individuals who make up an even more successful organization.
This will be an interesting month of transition for us. Last evening I was able to attend the "graduation" of our latest YEA participants. It was exciting to hear the summaries of their businesses and even more rewarding to hear from their instructors how much the program helped them to grow as individuals. Special thanks to Monica and Mark for representing the Chamber Education Foundation at this 30-week course. Also, thanks to our coordinator John Tsoi, instructors Stan Ulvin and Robyn Lawhon who made the program possible for our students. Of course, none of this would have been possible without the help of Antelope Valley College who provided not only facilities, but also financial backing. All of our sponsors, mentors and presenters worked to make this program a reality. Thanks to everyone.
Anna is very busy putting together our upcoming Installation Dinner welcoming Monica as the new Chairwoman of the Board. This event will take place on Friday, June 16th at the University of Antelope Valley with Social Hour starting at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $50 each and can be purchased through the Chamber office. Special thanks to Anna for putting together what is sure to be a special program and thanks to Mark and Sharon for helping her with this event. Remember
sponsorship
opportunities are available.
Our last 16-17 Board meetings will take place this month as well, so please plan accordingly. I must also thank the fabulous Board of Directors and Ambassadors that have made this year possible. The leadership, welcoming ways, and again sheer dedication are amazing. We are blessed to have you as integral members of the Chamber.
Thanks to Kimberly Keane-Perkins and her committee for their work with the Work Ethics Scholarship Program. Being able to award $9000 in scholarships will make such a difference to the students we honored, and again I am so thankful for the generosity of our members who made this possible.
Don't forget our final Business-4-Breakfast will be on June 22nd at the AM CafƩ. Please come out for networking, camaraderie, and a good start to your day. Remember that we have no luncheon program this month as we have our installation.
Our Flea Market was again a big success in spite of the iffy weather. Thanks to Anna, Sharon and Mark for their support in getting this put together and to all the volunteers who make it happen. We will be giving an update on our financial success.
Once again, I want to thank you for allowing me the privilege of serving as Chairwoman this year. It has been an honor and I feel blessed to have gotten to know so many wonderful members much better this year. Enjoy your summer and see you at the Installation.
Regina Rossall
Chairwoman of the Board

Small Business Month
Recognizing the Contributions of our Business Community
By Sen. Scott Wilk
Job creators - you are the lifeblood of California's entrepreneurial spirit and the backbone of this state's economic engine. May is Small Business Month, and I want to say thank you to all the mom-and-pop businesses out there for their commitment to California and our communities.
Some people mistakenly think it is the Apple Computers or Intels of this state that employ the most Californians, and they would be wrong.
Two out of three Californians are employed by a small business, and almost 97 percent of all businesses in California have 49 or fewer employees. Your businesses are truly the backbone of our economy.
Those of you who are responsible for creating the jobs that help families pay their mortgage and put food on the table are also aware of the continual and constant threat new laws and regulations have on your business. Regulations pile on and the cost of doing business continues to increase.
As a small business owner, former member of the California Assembly and now a member of the California Senate, I recognize and understand the value the Chamber of Commerce provides in outlining the effects - both positive and negative - the new legislation we pass in Sacramento will have on your business and the jobs you provide.
Legislation is now moving briskly through the legislative process. Just last week more than 800 bills were given the up or down vote by the a
ppropriations committees of each house. Many of these proposals will affect nearly every aspect of your lives; in particular I want to draw your attention to a couple that will directly affect your businesses.
- Senate Bill 33 (Dodd): The CalChamber believes will this bill will "unfairly discriminate against arbitration agreements contained in contracts for goods and services."
- SB 62 and SB 63 (both Jackson): These bills will not only increase costs to small businesses by requiring small businesses with as few as 20 employees to expand maternity and paternity laws, but will also increase the risk of litigation and create less conformity with existing federal law.
Unfortunately, the list of "job killer" bills will only grow in the weeks and months to come. As your representative in the Legislature, I want you to know that I take this list very seriously.
I believe businesses of all sizes in California already face too much red tape,
over-regulation
and unnecessary legislation that ultimately make it more difficult for you to operate.
Because protecting California businesses and the vital jobs you create is a top priority of mine as a legislator, I want to make it clear that I won't support any legislation that impedes your ability to operate and threaten even one job.
My goal is to do everything I can to lift the barriers that make it difficult for your businesses to grow and thrive in California. I look forward to working with local and state chambers in the months and years to come. Together we'll make job growth and entrepreneurial success a reality.
Sen. Wilk proudly represents the 21st District in the California State Senate.
