Work Ethics Scholarship Awards 2018

Congratulations to the students who were selected to receive the Lancaster Chamber
Work Ethics Scholarship this year!

With the generous support of our sponsors and Chamber members (through your renewals and raffle donations), the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce was able to award scholarships totaling $14,000 to 15  high school students with stellar work ethics and academic success.

To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be high school seniors who will graduate this summer, work part-time in an area business or training in a paid or unpaid  internship, demonstrate good work ethics including being trustworthy, responsible, respectful, and fair, and plan to enroll in a college or technical school in the fall. In addition to the application, students also had to submit an essay and have their employer submit a letter of recommendation.

Thank you to our 2018 Work Ethics Scholarship  sponsors:

Congratulations to the
Young Entrepreneurs Academy class of 2018!

This year ' s class has accomplished much this year, starting six unique businesses.

Coming into the program, we had several goals for the students. The most visible goal was for students to start their own business or social movement, but there were more.
  • For students to recognize the power of their ideas and develop the skills necessary to turn those ideas into meaningful enterprises.
  • For students to become creative, collaborative thinkers and leaders who could articulate their ideas.
  • To expose students to real world experiences, while at the same time increasing their public speaking skills, their confidence, and their drive to succeed.
  • For students to not only be entrepreneurial, but to leave the program with the entrepreneurial mindset.
  • Accomplishing these goals would allow students to leave the program, not only with a business, but with a set of skills and abilities that they could take with them and use in any aspect of their lives.

It was a tall order, but over the course of the year, these skills have developed in each of the students. They have done what many twice their age would never attempt, and they have done it with spirit, energy and enthusiasm.

To run a successful academy, it involves a large pool of professionals from many different fields. First is our partner, Antelope Valley College, which elevates our class to a much higher level. We wouldn't be able to have a YEA! Program without AVC.

That's just the tip of the iceberg; the operations and week to week administration is led by our Program Manager Ms. PJ DelGaudio.

The YEA! Academy teaches from a community approach. We bring in in highly recognized local community leaders as guest speakers, as mentors, as CEO's for our CEO Roundtable Event, and as Corporate Sponsors to provide seed money to our new businesses and partake in our "shark tank" investor panel.

 Instructors
            Stan Ulvin, Sierra Towing
            Mark Hemstreet, Lancaster Chamber

Mentors
Chris Spicher , AV Florist
Chris Perosi, The Tech Gods
 Terry Roth , Jag Insurance
Kim Perkins, First City Credit Union
Diane Hoey, World One Telecommunications
Bill Meck, William Edwards Photography
Rodney Jacobson, Mortgage Management Consultants

Corporate CEO Roundtable
Monica Grado, Georges Cleaners
Doug Cain, Antelope Ambulance
Dave Owens, Farmers Insurance
Stephine Hix, Westside Body & Paint

Investor Panel
Kelly Miller, AVTA
Liz Seelman, So. Cal Edison
Miguel Gomez, Sam's Club
Sydney Yeseta,  City of Lancaster
Ed Knudson,  Antelope Valley College
Robyn Lawhon,   Lancaster West Rotary
Daren Ayres-Malaj,  Antelope Valley Hospital

Field Trips
            Sandy Smith, Rocket Fizz
            Pam Clark, Passintino Andersen
            Charles Worth, Spadefox Gaming

One of our academy highlights is our investor panel/shark tank where our CEO's have the opportunity to meet and present their businesses plans to our Sponsors. And like shark tank, our investors decide if they choose to invest their money in some, none or all the businesses. The only difference is they do not accept any equity in our CEO's newly developed enterprises. In addition to the monies invested, the panel also elects the top presenter who then represents the Lancaster YEA! program with a fully paid trip to Rochester, New York to compete nationally against 100 other YEA! CEO's from around the country. Their top pick this year was Miss Layal Kouri, CEO of The Garage Thrift & Consignment.

Starting new businesses this year with our Young Entrepreneurs Academy are:

CEO's                           Newly formed Business
Jillian Stebbins             Breathe Stationary
Payne Radford               Rad Tags
Amelia Lee                     Cu-T-Shirts
Layal Kouri                    The Garage Thrift & Consignment
Wyatt Gore                       Safe School Protection Kits
Tierra Washington         Forget-Me-Not Packages

As we were awarding our students their diploma's, closing this chapter on the YEA! Program, our new CEO's now have the means to choose the next chapter in their new businesses. And looking ahead, some will continue their business, some will move on to other entrepreneurial endeavors, but all will take away a higher level of self-confidence, problem solving skills, and a spirit of knowing they can accomplish more.

Lastly I want to give a big shout out to all of this years sponsors:

So Cal Edison, Lancaster West Rotary, Antelope Valley College, AVTA, Antelope Valley Hospital, Sam's Club, Lancaster Sunrise Rotary, Sol Plaza, HW Hunter, and the City of Lancaster. We couldn't succeed without you!

If you would like to be involved in next year's YEA! program, please let us know. If you know a student (grades 6-12) that has that entrepreneurial spirit and might be interested in applying for next year's program, please have them contact us at the Chamber!
