Sok Di Phi Mai!
One of the most important traditional festivals in Laos, the Lao New Year  (Phi Mai), is a month away . This is an ideal time to visit Luang Prabang to celebrate this monumental event.

Although the Lao New Year is celebrated throughout the country, nowhere hosts more ancient traditions and colorful pageantry than the UNESCO World Heritage city of Luang Prabang. This three-day long festival provides an endless amount of fun for families, single travelers, and couples.

The Lao New Year is held on the 14-16th of April  and recognizes the importance of water in people's lives. During the festival, Buddha statues are ritually cleaned, people receive blessings by building mounds of sand along riverbanks, and families hold ceremonies in their homes The Lao New Year is also a time where everyone has fun throwing water out in the streets. Though be prepared to get wet! Luang Prabang turns into a water war-zone overnightwhere anyone is a target to be sprayed, splashed, or soaked.

THE LAO NEW YEAR IN LUANG PRABANG
Phi Mai Festival 2014
The most elaborate New Year festival rites in the Lao PDR are held in Luang Prabang with processions of the legendary guardian spirits of town. For example, the Prabang Buddha statue is taken from the Royal Palace to Wat Mai for one of the most elaborate parades in this heritage town.
For many Lao people, the belief in spirits are an important part of the Lao New Year celebration. To make sure that no benevolent spirits leave the body during the new year, a ceremony (Baci) is carried out in all homes on the third day.
