Statement on Las Vegas Shooting
We mourn with our nation for all those who lives were tragically cut short because of the mass shooting in Las Vegas. It is surely a terribly sad moment with the loss of life and hundreds of injured. We pray for healing for the injured. We pray for strength for the families who have lost loved ones. We pray for wisdom and courage as our country struggles with the challenges of gun violence. May the memories of all those victims who have died bring blessing.

The Temple Israel Clergy
A Call for Disaster Relief Support
Our hearts go out to all those who are suffering from the effects of the recent hurricanes and earthquake. Many of our congregants have expressed concern over how we might directly help those in need. As many know, our beloved custodians, Abner and Juan Marin, have immediate family members who have experienced great loss. Like their fellow citizens in Puerto Rico, they are without power, water, and even now, a home. Abner and Juan are grateful beyond words for the loving outreach many have offered. We are organizing two ways to offer support their families directly and to the larger population:
  1. If you would like to directly support the Marin family , you can write a check to the Clergy Discretionary Fund with the note "Hurricane Maria Support." We will be holding the contributions on their behalf until the rebuilding effort gets underway and supplies become available, as Abner and Juan have requested.
  2. If you would prefer to make a contribution to general relief funds, please consider donating to UNIDOS , a disaster relief fund established by the Hispanic Federation and various U.S. civic leaders, which meets hurricane and earthquake-related needs and recovery efforts in Puerto Rico and Mexico. 100% of donations to UNIDOS go to help children, friends, and families recover from the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria and other recent disasters. On the drop down menu on their website, you will be able to select "Puerto Rico Hurricane Relief," or if you wish for your donation to support relief for another disaster you will have that option.
Amid these Days of Awe, we pray for strength, courage, and healing for all of those who are suffering. May the year 5778 be one of boundless compassion and hope.
