About the Workshop

This workshop addresses how to avoid egregious errors commonly made in schools that often result in poor outcomes for schools when litigated. These problems often occur as a result of not providing ABA services or providing them in an inappropriate manner. In addition, the taboo topic of punishment is examined to maintain students in the least restrictive environment. 

  • Participants will identify specific applications of ABA in schools that mitigate liability for schools
  • Participants will state examples of inappropriate
    uses of ABA resulting in litigation and
    poor outcomes for schools
  • Participants will examine case law that provides valuable guidance when IDEA guidelines are not clear regarding the FBA, behavior intervention plans, in-home services, unilateral placement, FAPE, & LRE
  • Participants will describe appropriate use of restrictive ABA procedures and the clinical monitoring of them in schools
  • Participants will describe ABA procedures to prevent the use of physical interventions for severe behaviors and best practices when they are needed in emergency situations
  • Participants will determine appropriate uses of punishment procedures going beyond content required to become certified as a BACB

As an attorney having working in the area of special education, Tony approaches clinical and business situations with a unique point of view. Understanding the rights of school districts and learners allows him to make informed recommendations for programming backed by case law and the principles of applied behavior analysis (ABA). While having an established repertoire in ABA, Tony specializes in resolving differences among child study teams and guardians, training others in consultative etiquette, and working with individuals in the Asperger's and Behavior Disorder population. He is driven by his interest in program development, systems level interventions, transition planning/supported employment, and community integration. Tony's 15 years of experience working in residential treatment facilities, as an adjunct professor at Holy Family University (10 years), as an attorney, and a behavioral consultant, allows a comprehensive understanding of all aspects and perspectives in any given situation involving necessitated behavior change.

Brett has the unique and distinguished experience of studying the principles of applied behavior analysis under the rigorous scrutiny of both Dr. Julie S. Vargas (formerly Skinner) and Dr. E.A. Vargas at West Virginia University's nationally recognized graduate program. For the past 23 years, Brett has used behavior analytic principles to create large scale change across school districts, fortune 500 companies, and across individual learners. Christopher J. Manente, Ph.D., BCBA

Christopher J. Manente is an Assistant Professor of Education at Caldwell University and a behavioral consultant working in schools across NJ.  Previously, he served as the Senior Program Coordinator of Adult Services at the Douglass Developmental Disabilities Center at Rutgers University. Dr. Manente has ten years of experience working with individuals with autism spectrum disorders and has authored articles in peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, and has presented at both local and national conferences.  Dr. Manente's research interests include the assessment and treatment of challenging behavior, the ethics of using punishment in treatment, behavioral economics, and the role of choice in treatment.  In addition, Dr. Manente is a strong advocate for the advancement of community based educational, vocational, and residential opportunities for older learners with autism.  

 

  

Matt Linder, BCBA

Executive Clinical Director

As the Executive Clinical Director, Matt provides both in-vivo training in schools and pull out workshop supervision to consultants. He draws experience from behavior analytic work with adults and children in residential, school and vocational settings. With experience providing clinical services to individuals with behavioral needs added to the years of experience living with a sister on the autism spectrum, Matt is able to analyze and approach various behavioral scenarios with a unique insight. As a Certified Safe and Positive Approaches trainer, he exhibits particular expertise in managing individuals in crisis situations, creating therapeutic behavior change, training parents and staff members on behavior plans, function-based interventions, and matching appropriate behavior principles to individual situations. Within a comprehensive knowledge of behavioral analytic principles, Matt expresses more specific interest in secondary principles of behavior change procedures, alternative methods of functional behavior assessment, matching law, and transfer of stimulus control.
