MOTORBOOKS BLOG |

In The Harley in the Barn: More Great Tales of Motorcycle Archeology, author Larry Edsall shares this story that is so good, it almost sounds like an urban legend:
When Mark Johnson first heard the stories about an old guy in town who had World War II-era Harley-Davidson motorcycles still in their original crates, he was a high school student in East Hanover, New Jersey, in the middle of the 1960s.
Like so many other students of his generation, Johnson moved away after graduation. He went to college. He taught high school. He got into the printing business. He ran printing companies and then managed sales for a printing company so large it was among the Fortune 500. He traveled the world.
And then one day he hung up his suits and returned to his roots. He opened his own motorcycle shop (Custom Bike Works), which soon expanded with a specialized powdercoating business (Mac Coatings) and a custom bike building business (The Big Johnson Motorcycle Co.). Johnson set up his shops in Dover, New Jersey, less than 20 miles from where he'd grown up.
